- The Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum 2016 Trophy for Lifetime Achievement was awarded to Capt. James A. Lovell.
Lovell was as a naval officer, aviator, and a pioneer in the space program. The Lifetime Achievement Trophy recognizes the lasting impact his achievements have had on the history of space exploration. During his career, Lovell accumulated more than 7,000 flight hours, including 4,500 in jet aircraft, 715 in space, and 107 carrier landings, holding the record for time in space until surpassed by the Skylab flights. He participated in four historic NASA missions Gemini VII, Gemini XII, Apollo 8, and Apollo 13. Lovell was one of the first men to leave Earth’s gravitational pull, the first man to journey twice to the Moon, and was indispensable to the safe landing of Apollo 13.

Jim Lovell is my favorite astronaut. I saw all of his flights as a kid. I'll never forget Apollo 8 and 13.

Guys I'm from Sri Lanka and thanks to the movies and the internet, I've self studied about the ENTIRE American space program. So amidst knowing ALL of them heroes, I can also affirm that Jim Lovell is my Favourite Astronaut of All time as well. I love him from all my heart, and by some more! ❤️

To me, the young actor who plays Jim Lovell's son in the movie "Apollo 13" is the spitting image of the young Jim Lovell himself at 0:08. Amazing!!
If I were granted a wish to meet any one person on this earth of my choice, it would have to be Jim Lovell. What a great guy and wonderful human being.

If I had a favorite astronaut, it would be Lovell. Such a positive and genuine dude who will tell his story to anyone who asks with relish while having one of the best resumes in human history. Apollo 8 was the most important and daring flight in the Apollo program, proving the landing was possible at that the CSM had the Deltav to get it done. (Not to mention 13 but that goes without saying)

What an amazing man I have been so privileged to meet and see the depth of this man perhaps he is the most motivational person I've ever met in life. He should be a study and what it means to have a good attitude

His interests are literally the exact same as mine!!!! I’m currently a high school student pilot! Hopefully to become a fighter pilot and maybe an astronaut. This guy is just amazing!! He is indeed my favorite astronaut and inspired me so much!

Wow he really does resemble Kevin Costner, well since he’s older, Costner looks like Lovell in his younger years.

The only thing that would piss you off as an Astronaught would be that you don't get to go to space as much as you'd want to.

All humanity's calendars should be adjusted so that year time zero would be the instant that this spacecraft became the first vehicle carrying humans to leave the pull of the Earth's gravity. That should be year zero and all else be before Apollo8 time or after Apollo 8 time. Colloquially said screw this AD and BC and BCE and all other time year superstitions zero constants.
