Hindsight is 2020: - Boeing's Starliner is delayed due to failed tests, SpaceX's Dragon has launched the first American astronauts to orbit after the Shuttle - "Let's light this candle" was in fact Doglas Hurley's last radio comm before launch
The funny thing is, I don't know if he was referring to something or just joking, but in the movie Hidden Figures, where Alan Shepard actually uses the phrase, "Light this candle." I had to look it up after that, and it turns out he did actually use the phrase. It's been repeated in astronaut movies since, for example "The Right Stuff" from 1983.
Secretly hoping he strapped Stephen to one of the capsules and sent him into oblivion..... But nah. Chris Fergy is actually quite humorous in a nerdy sort of way! These two make a great nerdy team!
Stephen usually does Stephen at Home segment sometimes........ although i like your idea a TH-cam live show during ad breaks maybe...come on CBS we are dependent on you dammit!?
Colbert looks like he is having a boyhood dream come true here, he is one gleeful guy. But seriously, a switch that can't withstand Stephen's fidgety fingers... that unsettled me somehow..
Alan B. Shepard, on the very first flight of an American Astronaut said, after waiting in the Freedom 7 Mercury capsule for over 4 hours... “Why don’t you fix your little problem and light this candle?” So, Colbert was in good company when he said that.
trump gets elected NASA: shit. a month later... NASA: we found 7 planets that look like earth 3 of them we can live on there's enough space for everyone
"sir, these seven planets aren't exactly perfectly compatible...they still got low oxygen lev..." "WE RE NOT GOING THROUGH THIS AGAIN MIKE, WE RE GONNA SET SAIL AWAY FROM THIS ORANGE BIMBO"
Actually Boeing's Starliner suit -- crew on NASA's Orion program will wear the Shuttle-derived MACES, which is a hybrid of the orange Shuttle launch / escape suit ACES and the white EMU suit used for spacewalks on the ISS!
Apart from licensing / branding issues, I don't see why they couldn't, but as far as I know SpaceX plan to use launch escape suits of their own design on the Dragon.
Omkar Paropkari not just the suit, the entire fucking atlas V rocket and the capsule is made by Boeing. NASA just gives the contract to these companies to launch rockets. Mujhe mat sikha!
FYI, service animal permissions only go to non-sterile environments. I couldn't, for instance, take my service dog into a job in a kitchen without special allowances and the employer would not be obligated to provide those if it provided an undue stress on their infrastructure. Yeah, I know it's a joke. This is mostly aimed at people who misunderstand the largely misunderstood realm of service animals.
Victor - This is true. However, if the animal was to help treat a disabling anxiety disorder, then it could reasonably be trained in tasks and be prescribed by a doctor to be a service animal. There are a lot of misunderstandings about psychiatric service animals and bits like that one sorta perpetuate them.
For anyone wondering, both the Boeing Starliner and SpaceX Crew Dragon are expected to be done in 2018, as is the current schedule for NASA's EM-1 Mission, though a current consideration on making it manned would push the date.
There ARE good people out there. I'm watching and glad they exist. I have no seat on their boats, but wave as they sail by, remembering when I once tacked with the wind.
"breaking that switch is not going to reflect well upon you". If that switch can be so easily broken, I'd say it's not going to reflect well on your engineering team...
Astronaut Sunny Williams was standing right there. She's been on the ISS and is scheduled on the pioneer Boeing mission. Can you have her on the show please?????? She's my hero!
How did I miss this segment?? Colbert will do anything for a laugh! Shaking his booty in the space suit ... omg! 😂 He even says he looks like Nicki Minaj ! And this years segment with her was golden ! Oh man, I love me some Stephen Colbert !! Let’s light this candle! 🚀
I love the way the astronaut was very analytical on when colbert was talking about his arse in that suit, and why the suit was that way. Shows you, to be an astronaut you have to analyse things quickly, and why out why that should be that way. Very important if your own your own in space, a quick analyse of a problem, or situation. I like the way the astronaut was very analytical, and really had no sense of humour, lol. He thought colbert was like a kid, lol.
Jesus Christ, better Stephen break that switch NOW then when the astronauts are on ACTUAL re-entry! (Holy crap, this shouldn't be as breakable as a Fischer price toy!)
Janet Snakehole wait, i didn't think he actually broke it. It's nearly impossible to break a standard metal toggle switch with your bare hands, and you'd really have to be trying hard to break one of the super cheap plastic ones used on toys.
If I had alot of friends we'd start sayin *"You ready to fly?' 'Sho enuff, let's light this candle!'* for starting music gigs, events or going somewhere important
Hindsight is 2020:
- Boeing's Starliner is delayed due to failed tests, SpaceX's Dragon has launched the first American astronauts to orbit after the Shuttle
- "Let's light this candle" was in fact Doglas Hurley's last radio comm before launch
And nose space x is putting all their efforts into a manned mission to Mars
Update: Spacex has launched the first crew rotation mission to the ISS and Boeing hasn't even launched Starliner with crew yet.
Also Blue Origin's launch was team 'Let's light this candle' at t-30s
That was like a classic Daily Show interview segment.
wait ..Jon Stewart will return to "The Late Show" on Monday night !! :)
Jenna Smith do not fuck with me.. is this really really real? Stewie coming back?!
I could still get into that. Thanks
Yes it was. Both the good and the bad parts.
Indees. How I miss those, especially with Jason Jones.
I did not expect the stormtrooper lol. This whole video is a comedic gold.
i bet that stormtrooper uniform is his
He wears it under all his clothes
or in this case, more like comedic platinum.
if you think this is comedic gold you must still be laughing at yo mama jokes.
abemagic10 titanium
That candle was lit.
at both ends and then some!
“SpaceX Dragon, we’re go for launch. Let’s light this candle.”
-Doug Hurley, T -38 seconds to launch of SpaceX Crew Dragon, May 30 2020.
"Lets light this candle" will now be the official command to launch ColbertOne!
FreshHas and they will literally light one of Stephen's lavender scented candles
Márk Dávid Lovas Stephen's line of scented candles are amazing. Few people know that he just does this show to support his chandlering.
Pharoah Polystyrene Where can I go to find them
That phrase was first used back in the 60s...
whats funny is that crew dragon used this phrase to launch before the Starliner
That last jump tho... Stephen is just so adorable!
That was so Colbert Report-esque. Pure Perfection. I miss that show so much.
Stephen broke the spaceship and they make him commander. I'm jealous.
Because he broke it... now he'd better lead them back home
6:15 I'm pretty sure they did say "Let's light this candle" in the SpaceX launch.
Steven should do more of these interviews. Flashbacks to his daily show days
As soon as Mr. NASA said 'strap-on', I snorted and woke up my cat.
+Ende Pointe
That's not your cat, that's your iPhone.
Ende Pointe Does he wear a little lab coat and clipboard?
That's what they are actually called, not joking.
it's funny because you're a pharaoh.
This show just keeps on getting better and better! Stephen Colbert is a splendid and charming role-model.
Reminds me of the Combined Operational Load Bearing External Resistance Treadmill (COLBERT) that was installed on the International Space Station.
That guy was losing his patience
Secretly hoping he strapped Stephen to one of the capsules and sent him into oblivion.....
But nah. Chris Fergy is actually quite humorous in a nerdy sort of way! These two make a great nerdy team!
"Does my astronaut look big in this spacesuit?"
😀😀
asstronaut*
fidorover lol
Pressure suit*
huh
This is pure gold
Ick
You Know You know that's not a real pic of her right?
Your Average Guy what makes you think that?
I wish you would do TH-cam live when your live shows air for us international fans who can't watch them on CBS.
Stephen usually does Stephen at Home segment sometimes........
although i like your idea a TH-cam live show during ad breaks maybe...come on CBS we are dependent on you dammit!?
Joanne Vic Amen to that from Bangladesh.
Rizvi Redwan You mean Ameen.
YES
Colbert looks like he is having a boyhood dream come true here, he is one gleeful guy.
But seriously, a switch that can't withstand Stephen's fidgety fingers... that unsettled me somehow..
@@kt_drul it's a mock up capsule, for training getting in and out
Alan B. Shepard, on the very first flight of an American Astronaut said, after waiting in the Freedom 7 Mercury capsule for over 4 hours... “Why don’t you fix your little problem and light this candle?” So, Colbert was in good company when he said that.
trump gets elected
NASA: shit.
a month later...
NASA: we found 7 planets that look like earth 3 of them we can live on there's enough space for everyone
+Lyle Fox will he just made a n easier route for us to escape.
actually Trump want's to defund Nasa, and they are operating on a fixed budget.
"sir, these seven planets aren't exactly perfectly compatible...they still got low oxygen lev..."
"WE RE NOT GOING THROUGH THIS AGAIN MIKE, WE RE GONNA SET SAIL AWAY FROM THIS ORANGE BIMBO"
I've seen this exact same joke on other sites, so u probably weren't the first to come up with it
azzoozzgamer3 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
What Stephen is doing with his show is incredible. His platform is unprecedented.
When you see Sunita Williams casually standing in the back
Why so charming Stephen? 😍
Ariane A. He's sooo military operation 😍😍
+Royo2013 That reference was even more of a military operation ✌✌✌
Let's light this candle is exactly what Doug said when crew 1 took off lol
The undisputed king of late night
"Daddy wants in" *snicker*
He did a similar routine about a decade ago, visiting NASA. It was so funny I still remember it.
NASA's new Asstronaut suit ;)
Actually Boeing's Starliner suit -- crew on NASA's Orion program will wear the Shuttle-derived MACES, which is a hybrid of the orange Shuttle launch / escape suit ACES and the white EMU suit used for spacewalks on the ISS!
Could they also wear that suit if they were using SpaceX's Dragon capsule, or is this made exclusively for use in the StarLiner?
Apart from licensing / branding issues, I don't see why they couldn't, but as far as I know SpaceX plan to use launch escape suits of their own design on the Dragon.
It's different systems, the suits are not compatible. AFAIK SpaceX is developing its own pressure suits.
NASA'S HOT
Isaac Newton that's Boeing not NASA.
Isaac Newton 'T-minus 3 ... 2 ... 1 It's lit!'
'Just say lift-off, Jerry.'
'haha my daughter told me I shou-'
'JERRY!!'
+Blackeye 99 that is NASA, the suit is made by Boeing.
+Blackeye 99 I mean, as far as we know, that's NASA. Could also be a studio.
Omkar Paropkari not just the suit, the entire fucking atlas V rocket and the capsule is made by Boeing. NASA just gives the contract to these companies to launch rockets. Mujhe mat sikha!
I really need a service possum
i nee a service dog
Hehe, love it when he's back in character
that dude was such a good sport.
This guy is super hard working. Does he take rest. Amazing. Full respect Steve!
i love the slow mo scene :D
5:42 Doug actually said that in Demo 2
Finally! I loved SC's remote bits on Colbert Report. I think that's where he's funniest. I wish he'd drop talking to celebrities altogether.
"Do you guys always use two strap-ons?" :-)
for this one yes
😂ROFLMAO😂
Nah they use five ;)
Colbert was right. They still say "let's light this candle"
And what a fine sticker placement he did...
huh
doug hurley said light this candle for demo 2
FYI, service animal permissions only go to non-sterile environments. I couldn't, for instance, take my service dog into a job in a kitchen without special allowances and the employer would not be obligated to provide those if it provided an undue stress on their infrastructure.
Yeah, I know it's a joke. This is mostly aimed at people who misunderstand the largely misunderstood realm of service animals.
Vidihawk Cool cool.
I didn't know that. Thank you!
Vidihawk emotional support animals are NOT service animals
Victor - This is true. However, if the animal was to help treat a disabling anxiety disorder, then it could reasonably be trained in tasks and be prescribed by a doctor to be a service animal. There are a lot of misunderstandings about psychiatric service animals and bits like that one sorta perpetuate them.
But really though, I dunno that too many people would complain about having a dog in the kitchen so long as they got to play with the dog
"Just 40 light years from here." Just around the corner!
That's one small step for Colbert, one giant leap for comedy.
5 straps-on at once?!!😂😂😂
Colbert's making progress - from a treadmill to a capsule.
more segments like this!
"Lets light this candle" XD great segment!
That was one of the best Colbert bits in ages!
This made my Sunday. Love you Steve. Thanks for what you are doing for NASA
Loved this ❤ just like a classic remote
Karen M This is a soon-to-be classic.
6:17 watches spacex broadcast" As you can see doung Herlly's son telling him let's light this candle"...at launch "let's light this candle"
For anyone wondering, both the Boeing Starliner and SpaceX Crew Dragon are expected to be done in 2018, as is the current schedule for NASA's EM-1 Mission, though a current consideration on making it manned would push the date.
3:57 took me a hot second to recognize him without the glasses 👓
Next time I light the bong I will say "we're ready to fly." in a cool astronaut voice.
Colberts going to space?
Wait Stephen, Take us with you!!!
take us with you take us with you take us with you take us with you take us with you take us with you take us with you
Greatest late night show ever! (Besides John Oliver)
Ohio Imevbore Letterman in the early 90s was great
And Conan.
Ohio Imevbore true
Seth is close
Ryan Walsh yep seth is really doing great Colbert,Seth John Oliver r best ( political ) but conan is good if u don't want politics.
OMG, I love you, Stephen! Good on Astronaut Ferguson for playing along so well. :)
That switch he broke probably was expensive
. But he can pay it off, because this is comedy gold!
That bit about the phalic rocket was hilarious.
There ARE good people out there. I'm watching and glad they exist. I have no seat on their boats, but wave as they sail by, remembering when I once tacked with the wind.
Start with KSP and work your way up.
7:59 Someone please make a shooting stars meme out of this 😂
I love how the NASA guy is playing along 😂😂😂
4:55 Killed me 😂😂😂😁😂
Conan O'Brien style of comedy. I like it!
Sergiu Moldovan Not at all. This is how he was in Colbert Report.
You're awesome, Stephen!!
If that suit doesn't make your ass look military operation, then I don't know what does.
I love these kinds of segments!
man u made me laugh like never in a year ... luv u Stephen
Steven just got them tossed away into space. 😂😂😂😂
Take me with you Stephen. Let's go to the stars.
He's like an adult child😂😂
We need more skits like these!!
Talk about having fun! That would be pretty cool to do!
i like the pic in front of your name i read peanuts
"breaking that switch is not going to reflect well upon you". If that switch can be so easily broken, I'd say it's not going to reflect well on your engineering team...
Chris Fergie posing for a selfie is so adorable! And Suni Williams just casually featured in the background....
Love you Colbert~
Colbert said "stick around" hahhaa
This is my guy man..... Mr. Colbert Makes my day every day.
Let's light this candle! XD
Very funny clip - what a great way to start my day :-)
We need more Colbert Remotes!
That pilot is one of the coolest people on Earth. We'll miss him when he leaves the planet.
He is the most adorable middle aged man on the planet.
Astronaut Sunny Williams was standing right there. She's been on the ISS and is scheduled on the pioneer Boeing mission. Can you have her on the show please?????? She's my hero!
"strap on solid boosters" huhhhuhuhhhuuhhhuuhhuh
low key putting a sticker on anything nasa is bad ass lol
How did I miss this segment?? Colbert will do anything for a laugh! Shaking his booty in the space suit ... omg! 😂
He even says he looks like Nicki Minaj ! And this years segment with her was golden ! Oh man, I love me some Stephen Colbert !! Let’s light this candle! 🚀
We "lost" Jon Stewart but we "won" Stephen Colbert. And on national television! We're all good :)
sticker placement commander tells us to stick around in the end
pure gold from start to finish
This is one of his funniest ones so far! 😂😂😂
When Stephen breaks the switch... LMAO!!!!
6:24 "the cooler astronauts just don't say that" Alan Shepard and Bob Behnken must be really mad.
5:47 A Fly entry on scene. Funny just after touch those Detoxing air Switches.
Jesus Christ, better Stephen break that switch NOW then when the astronauts are on ACTUAL re-entry! (Holy crap, this shouldn't be as breakable as a Fischer price toy!)
its a scripted joke. Relax
Hey, hey, hey. Fisher Price makes reliable products, okay?
Janet Snakehole wait, i didn't think he actually broke it. It's nearly impossible to break a standard metal toggle switch with your bare hands, and you'd really have to be trying hard to break one of the super cheap plastic ones used on toys.
Adog312 You can see a piece falling off and landing behind them.
It's obvious that that was part of the skit.
One of the best clips by Stephen ever! :-)
If I had alot of friends we'd start sayin *"You ready to fly?' 'Sho enuff, let's light this candle!'*
for starting music gigs, events or going somewhere important
