    In the books "His Dark Materials", which is about many different worlds, in at least one world the name for electricity is a bit different. It's called "anbaric energy" with "anbaric" is derived from amber. In one point of the book, the two protagonists, one from the that world and one from ours, were very confused because of this.

      It took me most of the book the realize that "anbaric" meant the same as electric. The reveal in the next book was also eye-opening.

    the arabic word was written backwards, and the letters should've been connected. The correct way to write it would be "عنبر"

      @amberrosemorgan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Apologies, this is my fault completely - Patrick wrote it correctly in his notes to me, then the font we use in the videos didn’t recognise the characters (it just produced 4 blank squares) so I kept scrolling through different fonts until I saw the Arabic letters appear again - once they appeared, I didn’t then check back to the original appearance in the notes. A lesson learnt and I will be more careful in the future regarding things like this. - Amber (Patrick’s editor for Fun With First Names)

      @@amberrosemorgan This was my fault too as I didn’t pick up on this error when I reviewed the video when Amber sent it over. Huge apologies and we shall both be more vigilant in the future.

    Fun fact: there's an obscure word in Ezekiel that the ancient greeks translated as "electron" and because of that, is now the modern hebrew word for electricity.

    this was such an interesting video, videos like this are why you are one of my favorite channels on youtube
    in fiction, it's very common to see gen stones associated with some kind of magical energy so the idea that the name electricity, which is what most people think of when talking about energy, comes from a gen stone just feels really cool and really makes things feel like they come full circle :D

    I was surprised to learn that amber has nothing to do with "ember", even though ember can shimmer in an "amberly" light.
    And all I wanted to do was make a wordplay on an amber Ember-dragon.

    The ambergris conversation kind of reminded me of a joke that Kurt Vonnegut told, I forget where and he didn't claim to be the originator of it. "What do you call the white stuff in bird s***? Still bird s***."

    In Arabic amber have 2 names "kahraman" that came from Persian (which the Arabic and Greek word for electricity was named ) and عنبر "amber" which is usually used for ambergris more than the gem stone.

    I'm surprised you didn't mention that amps of electric may come from switching the plosive, see how Amber and Ampere are so much alike in spelling, and plosive letters (b,p) have a habit of getting switched.

      That's a coincidence. The Ampere is named after a French physicist.

    Fun fact, amber in Arabic is also called kahraman (or kahraban depending on dialect) while electricity is called kahrabaa. So amber has etymological relation to electricity in Arabic too.

    The Greek word elektron also gave us the female name Elektra, meaning not only "amber," but also "bright" and "luminescent."

    • @TheZenytram
      @TheZenytram 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      i didnt new that the real meaning was "shining" . and that amber was just a sort of "figure of speech" which became the word for that shiny orange translucent rock.
      in a way, the original word turn out to make absolutely sense for it not.

    I’ve noticed the name Ember getting more popular lately. Perhaps that is because Amber is seen as a name for older women and Emma/Emily is becoming a bit too popular, so mixing the two sounds into Ember makes it feel like a classic name but also new. However, I’m not sure why people think naming their child after dying coals is a good idea.

    I’m late on this video, somehow I missed it. Anyway, I knew an Amber in high school, which made the name, in my mind, associated with snotty, catty, popular girls. I went to school in Chicago and I don’t image that name is very popular with most of the city’s demographics, so I’m not surprised that with it’s popularity at the time (born at the name’s peak), I only knew one.
    Also, thank you for highlighting my comment, it kinda made my day. It’s nice to be noticed for being positive, considering negative comments usually steal the spotlight.

    FYI more info on ambergris: Because the beaks of giant squids have been discovered within lumps of ambergris, scientists have theorized that the substance is produced by the whale's gastrointestinal tract to ease the passage of hard, sharp objects that it may have eaten.

    The revised dictionaries (by modern anti Jacobian scholars) say:
    ē̇ -lek´trum : The Revised Version, margin rendering of חשׁמל , ḥashmal , of Ezekiel 1:4 , Ezekiel 1:27; Ezekiel 8:2 Septuagint ἤλεκτρον , ḗlektron , Vulgate (Jerome's Latin Bible , 390-405 ad) electrum ). Both the King James Version and the English Revised Version have "amber" while the American Standard Revised Version has "glowing metal." Gesenius says electrum must not be understood as being here used for amber, but for a kind of metal remarkable for brightness, compounded of gold and silver. "Amber" is undoubtedly a poor rendering, as the Hebrew term means "polished brass." the American Standard Revised Version has the more correct rendering. Amber, however, may well have been known to Ezekiel (Encyclopaedia Biblica , which see). See also STONES , PRECIOUS; BUYING , IV.
    These scholars are from the 70s, not the 1770s, (but even in the 1770s, Adam Weisapt of the christian freemasons was a athiest unreligious and enlightened philosopher), so my guess is these people are putting people like him, such as stephen hawkings name to shame - for stephen hawking was an expert in the bible. He disprooved Edom was the Rose heads. He disprooved Obadiahs connecting of rome to edom, dispite the eagle self exaltation verse. Or maybe you are just saying myths that have long been disprooven by both the left and the right.
