  • I just discovered what might be the best focusing screen for the Hasselblad 500 C/M. It is significantly less expensive than the vintage Acute Matte screens and still available new.

    I've got this screen (Hasselblad part number: H-3042264) from B&H even though I already have an Acute Matte D on my 503cx. I did it for two reasons: (1) the half-split Fresnel focusing aid with microprisms at the center (replacing the crosshairs); (2) the CFV-50c (II) back sensor framelines (in case I manage to get a 907x in the future - one can always dream...). Even though the original Acute Matte D screen is already pretty bright, adding the Fresnel is incredibly useful for critical focusing (a must if you are using a digital back, even more than with film - I wish I had that on my DSLR for using it with manual focus lenses). Also, having a brand-new focusing screen always helps regarding clarity. All in all, indeed the best focusing screen ever made for the Hasselblad V system.
    I also confirm that the Hasselblad CFV-50c focusing screen is really an Acute Matte D screen (the original was manufactured by Minolta in Japan at Hasselblad's request). One way you can tell is the pair of semicircle notches on the aluminum frame near one of its corners. The original (non-D) Acute Matte didn't have those.

      Thank you! If the CFV-50c is a really an Acute Matte D it also fits on a 501c, correct?

    • @PedroLauridsenRibeiro
      @PedroLauridsenRibeiro 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@zvitkovits yes, it fits on all 500-series V-system Hasselblads from the 500 C/M onwards, just like a regular Acute Matte D screen. The only possible exception is perhaps the older 500 C which is not fully modular, so it requires a technician to change the focusing screen.

    For each generation of screen (vintage, Acute Mate, Acute Mate D) Hasselblad made a new version of meetered prisms to cope with the brighter viewer image. When using current film sensitivities it's not possible to change ISO to compensate and the incorrect prism version has to be sent in service being recalibrated.
    A problem with many used Hasselblad sellers is that they remove original Acute Mate D screens from models that were originally equiped with and sell them separately for big monney, selling the body to a regular price but equipped with an old dark cheap screen.

  • @kevin-parratt-artist
    @kevin-parratt-artist 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    1. Those screens are for 500CM onwards. Not the 500C
    2. The lens does not have to be removed if the camera is not attached to a tripod or other supports. Simply inverting the camera allows the screen to drop out.
    3. Nicely presented video 👌 .. and thank you. Although I would like one without markings for the digital back.

    Way back when I bought my 500C/M, (about 20 years ago) I also bought the Accu-Bright screen. Can't remember what I paid, but was surely less than $US100. Now, I am so happy that I did. My whole Hasselblad kit is now worth much more than I paid for it.

    Many Thanks for the video. I just bought the new Hasselblad focusing screen CFV-50c for £199 brand new; cheaper than the secondhand acute matt screen I bought 3 years ago. The crop rectangle on the screen works very well with the digital back that came with my 907x.

    I'm new to waist-level viewfinders and wasn't sure if the focusing aids (microprism, splitscreen, etc) are essential to get fairly quick/accurate focusing. Part of me just wants a clear view from the finder without all the messy stuff, you know. I fortunately do have a fairly good eyesight, but wasn't sure if that would be any help for WLVs. Great vid by the way.

    • @ThomasEisl.Photography
      @ThomasEisl.Photography  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well, even with excellent eyesight, this can be helpful especially when focusing lenses wide open. Is it a must? Probably not. But I definitely recommend it.

    Although there are many Hasselblad users who are not aware that they can still buy a 'new' Acute Matte D screen, this news is actually very old.
    The focus screen has been on the market unchanged for 16 years. It was first delivered together with the release of the Hasselblad 503CWD in the year 2006. But I'm glad you 'discovered' it yourself and share this with others.... 🙂
