    It's incredible that Abram can speak 3 languages fluently. I feel like no one is mentioning that, for a closed off community he is able to speak really well.

      Europeans won't find that so incredible I guess, and after all, Mennonites are Europeans as well. Three languages are perfectly normal here - I'm currently learning my fifth. Besides, comparable groups like the Amish also speak more than one.

      I agree!
      i want to start a simple community. i have no interest in radical shunning. AND yes, that is very crazy, no phone to save lives.. I just think no electronics for sabbath would be nice and make us very free (maybe no electricity). maybe simple farming with animals.. ....I would still probably use a tractor too.
      Why do people love hiking and camping and live such healthy lives? ! (almost a rhetorical question)

      The doctor was trying to use the excuse of advanced medical assistance as a justification to break the rules and become more modern.
      When challenged on the issue, the truth came out. He was more interested in getting the phone than in helping the community. Putting his wants ahead of his duty to help the sick.
      He is a disgrace.

    My grandmother was a Mennonite (Conservative) and she was allowed modern conveniences unlike the Amish. She was from Indiana. Some homes did use gas lighting instead of electricity. So you cannot say that the Mennonites reject all modern technology. Communal phones are allowed for emergency and cars and cabs are allowed to take people to the hospital. My Gramma was very old fashioned and dressed very conservatively including her bonnet. She was one of the most lovely people who ever lived on this planet. I never heard her say a bad thing about anyone, ever.

    The insane thing is that the language they speak barely has anything to do with the German we know today. I'm a native speaker and I really have to concentrate to understand anything at all, let alone everything.
    It's fascinating to see how a language can develop in such different ways. I don't speak lower German myself but heard it a lot as a child but this somehow sounds different still.

      I heard a bit of German when I was a baby and very young from neighbors we had. I think it's High German or Modern German. It was weird learning so many words I didn't know i until I heard them as an adult. My family spent every Christmas with then for many years and the oldest Oma and Opa spoke English with a heavy accent.

      they are like the German Russians who returned to Germany and immigrated. It hasn't evolved at all and would be very frowned upon now like old German Russian families that returned to Germany instead of immigrating after WW2 as they had no home to return to. The german they spoke was the german of the late 1880's probably, they had no influence to evolve the language unlike Germans of Germany.

      It's actually Low German. For several years I worked in police department that had a Mennonite police chief. Strange situation as he didn't carry a gun but he had a shotgun at home. He occasionally would talk on the phone in their low German dialect and he was surprised when I understood him. He did drive a patrol car but he rarely stopped anyone. The rare times he did you knew they were getting a citation 😮 He was definitely different to deal with.

      There are differnt Mennonite groups in my area....I knew Mennonites who were like a regular church, then others who dressed more traditionally but live like most people...then there are the hard core old school Mennonites....and Hutterites, who all live in colonies and farm and run communal businesses like making steel roofing. They are honest and hardworking....and scrupulously honest.....somehting I have not found in my few dealings with the local less traditional Mennonites. I went to college with a bunch of Mennonites. They were not like the Mennonites on this video. They composed 35% of the students. Many of them were of Russian ancestry, descended from Russian immigrants after the Revolution. Others were German. They were intelligent, studious and had finished high school. Many went to grad school and excelled. They dated and married to non-Mennonite Christians with the blessing of parents and clergy. I played basketball with tall Mennonites who were asked to try out for the Canadian Olympics. There were a lot like Baptists in doctrine but they tended to be pacifistic, liberal in politics but conservative on personal morality. They were good students, good friends to me and some have maintained friendship with me for the last 50 years. Most of them were very social and engaging. I am a Catholic, but I loved the Mennonites I have known. The world needs more of them.

    The Mennonites portrayed here are quite traditional and conservative. I work for a Mennonite. He is the best boss I have had. We have become friends. He was raised in Plot Deutsch which he said is not the same as low German. He drives a truck and they have campers and all of the modern conveniences. Most of his family have motorcycles which they take on long trips. There are many different kinds of Mennonites. Some are more relaxed than the others. The ones here seem almost Ahmish. Many of the Mennonites here are very wealthy and own planes.

    • @random-person1
      @random-person1 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      That, from what little I know, is not your typical mennonite. They would normally shun outsiders and their world because it goes against the teachings of their Bible. I'm pretty sure buying planes goes against every fibre of their lives.
      Trucks, yes, I can understand the need for them, much the same as tractors and the like. Perhaps the odd 4X4 (atv) would be useful. But a plane? You may be telling the truth, sir, but I would question their faith in that case.

      @@random-person1Hello. Iam 75 years old and live in northern Canada on a farm. It makes me sad how split up Mennonites are. I grew up Mennonite Brethern and my mother was a school teacher. We dressed like other people do and I went to various schools,but spent 4 years at a private Mennonite school. After that I attended a Bible college and worked in a telephone office. Sometimes my work helped save a life. My brothers in law have their own planes because they are wealthy. However the youngest is a missionary pilot in Indonesia, We don’t ban anything. We just know the difference between right and wrong. Modern things are not a sin. ‼️It is what you do with them that matters. ‼️I do not drive my car fast because I don’t want an accident. We have a computer and TV but do not watch immoral programs. We have a lot of Mennonites from eastern Pennsylvania who do not want much to do with us because we don’t agree with all their rules. I have never worn a head covering or long dresses and my husband would find it strange if I did. I grew up in a German church but very few here in Canada use that language anymore because it is not practical. I can read and write and still speak some high German and understand some low German as that is what my grandparents spoke.My grandparents actually came from Ukraine 100 years ago. Many Mennonites were invited by Queen Katherine the great to come and farm there but they lost everything due to the Communist revolution. They began a new life in Canada as refugees and were hard working and successful. They were progressive and very much valued education whereas those called old colony Mennonites who came to Canada around 1875 did not, nor did they want to learn English. So they moved to Mexico and endured much hardship and poverty. Some came back to Canada and with the help of other Mennonites eventually became more modern. My grandfather Abram Wiens was very involved with those coming back and other Mennonite refugees arriving from Germany, Paraguay, and a few other places and I heard many stories about the leaders who led Mennonites out of Ukraine into Canada. We have a book written by my husbands grandfather called At the gates of Moscow about the journey.
      Iam sad these people think they must live so primitively in order to enter heaven. Man made rules are not helpful. The only way to enter Heaven is to recognize we are sinful and in need of a Saviour. IF we ask him to forgive us he is gracious and do so. We need to live a purposeful life, read and study the Bible, but we DO NOT need 100 rules. Obeying rules and being good or making our families live in poverty and medical and educational and social ignorance is not what the Lord expects of us. If He did we should still be living like they did at the time of Jesus birth! That would not be practical either. Can you imagine Mennonite farmers in flowing robes and sandals??? Salvation does NOT depend on wether I have fire insurance or if I speak Plautdietsch . It is not spelled Plot deetch either. It does not matter if I have health insurance so that I can get medical help. It does not matter if my children get educated. My husbands uncle was a doctor who served God in various countries. We think that’s wonderful to serve your fellowman. We grow grain to feed the hungry. Iam very disappointed in people that are portrayed in this video. In fact it’s very very backward and sad. A phone is a NECESSITY as is health insurance and a vehicle. Iam so sorry for these women who have to obey every whim of their husbands. Moving to the jungles is just stupid.

      @@random-person1Owning an airplane has NOTHING at all to do with your faith. If you need one to fly from your ranch to town to buy the nesscisities of life and can afford it well then Thank the Lord. If you use it to take others for pleasure rides in order to gain prestige and popularity I would question your need for it. Goodness if God allows you to have a computer,which I’m sure he does as long as you use it wisely, the same goes for an airplane. God wants us to have an easier life than they had 100 years ago. Just be sure to get flying lessons first. Do you really think God wants us to suffer hardship?? There is nothing wrong with any object or thing. It is HOW we use it and for what purpose we use it that matters. If I nearly beat my horse to death for not running fast enough then I would take you to the woodshed. Other than that please stop listening to foolish people. By the way I have been a Mennonite all my life.

    • @dorothywillms115
      @dorothywillms115 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Where do you live?? I’m in northern Canada. I was born Mennonite and I like watermelon, farmer sausage and roll Kuchen. ( kind of like fritters that are boiled in hot oil).😃 That’s a favorite Mennonite meal.I’m a 75 year old gramma and have lived on farms all my life. I speak German and can read my grammas Gothic print Bible. My mom was a teacher for a while. I attended a private Mennonite school in Abbotsford BC Canada. That school now has over 1000 students. My husband grew up on a farm which had a lake and was only 2 miles from the airport so they landed all the float planes there. In return my husband and his 4 brothers got free flying lessons. The youngest one became a missionary pilot in Indonesia. Two others had their own planes. One used his on a farm 100 miles from town. We never had one because they are very expensive and didn’t need one.l know very few Mennonite farmers that have planes so am curious where you live. Obviously not in some ridiculous jungle. Ahhhh maybe Pennsylvania?? We have many Eastern Pennsylvania Mennonites that have moved here. Some off shoot of the Amish. They have a100 rules such as dress codes, no red allowed, no musical instruments, head coverings, no fire insurance and the sad list goes on. They think they must do all these things besides accept Jesus Christ into their lives in order to get into heaven. We are much much more relaxed as you say. They don’t even allow the girls to have high school education whereas my own mom was a teacher. My husbands uncle was a doctor. I want to clarify that Plautdietsch and low German ARE the same. Even Plautdietsch is spoken differently in Belize than in Canada. They use a lot of en at the end of words. They came from Canada in the 1930’s or so because they refused to let their children go to public school or speak English. They were quarrelsome with a few Canadian rules so moved to Mexico and later to Belize to get away from government. They have many rules which they think qualifies them to get into heaven. That’s so sad because the only way to get to heaven is by admitting to Jesus that you have sinned and need his forgiveness. To grow in the Christian life it is important to read and study the Bible. I could write all night about Mennonites but I have all ready explained a lot in my other comments if you care to read them. Glad you have a good Mennonite boss. Give him greetings from our grain farm out west. Tell him gently he doesn’t need so many rules.😊

    I live in the mountains of Virginia. We have a few communities here. My wife and I shop at a few of their stores. They sell fabric, soap, fresh food, and lots of baked goods. From what I have seen from living in a country where the elderly WERE much respected, Japan, that goes a long way as a means to help guide children, and it is an important element that makes for a healthy society. It’s like a suite attached to their former house which a son and his young family will move into. I like the idea but it wouldn’t be possible in a city because of regulations. And,,,,,now a days with women working how can they care for elderly parents?

    • @f9qo
      @f9qo ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Certainly everyone eventually becomes old and most will eventually need care/support of one sort or another when they become less able to take care for themselves. One thing that I think is worth mentioning though, is that I believe that when an elderly person is respected and finds meaning in their existence by feeling productive (as in helping to raise children for example), and being loved or whatever it is that enhances the sense of honor and self esteem, it can well delay the point where they will be needing support from others due to being inhibited by age and poor health. Loneliness and isolation is not something that promotes good health.

You couldn't pick us out from a crowd of regular looking people. Most of us have modern conveniences, including TV and the internet. My mom was born and raised in the Mennonite Brethren church, which is a modern sect of Mennonites. Finally a regular Mennonite. Thanks. I’m M.B. I bet your mom would be interested in all the comments I’ve left behind. I know our history very well. I’m deeply ashamed of this group and all the heartache they’ve caused and are now perpetuating like flies in South America. Benjamin B Jantz who helped 20,000 Mennonites out of Ukraine 100 years ago and my grandfather Abram A Wiens would be very grieved if they knew about this. My grandfather helped get many who came during and after WWII get their paperwork done as immigrants. His sister was married to Jacob B Jantz. These folks were never grateful to live in Canada and quarrelled a lot re language and education with the Canadian government. So they got mad and moved to Mexico and on to South America. Soon the world will be too small for them and many of us would be happy to see them leave for Mars. They can create all the havoc and heartache there because they have no government on Mars that I know of. And don’t kid yourself. These self righteous men are very abusive. They have no relationship with God. Only to their ordnance which means a zillion man made rules so that they can dominate their own families. It’s a tragedy. It’s deceitful and simply wicked but that’s how the devil works. He is never out of tricks.

      P.S. The ones in Paraguay mostly came after WWII to the “green hell” in the Chaco where they really struggled for years. It was so hot they couldn’t cope well and they were even poorer than those that came to Canada. Some did come from Ukraine to Paraguay because Canada would not accept them ,usually because of a medical condition or Canada had filled its quota. My grandpa helped many that came to Canada via Paraguay with immigration matters.

      50 years ago perhaps the assimilated Mennonites were the majority, but that has changed.
      MC-USA has fallen from over 250k members 50 years ago to perhaps 60k today.
      Wheras the Old Order Mennonites have gone from around 15k to 85k, the Old Colony Mennonites number up to 450k, both the Conservative and Holdeman Mennonites have increased dramatically in the last 50 years.
      The only very traditional Mennonite group that has shown a sharp decline, is the Reformed Mennonites. Simply because they don't raise their children in the faith, allowing them to run wild.
      In perhaps another 2, definitely 3 generations, the liberal Mennonite will have so completely assimilated into mainstream America as to be extinct, with only the traditional conservative Mennonites left.
      Unfortunately when you are a minority group and you surrender your distinctiveness as a people, taking on the distinctiveness of the majority group, they will assimilate you into extinction. That is how the melting pot works, 500 years of sacrifice and suffering, gone in a couple of generations.

      @@calebalton2084 Thankyou for that information. It’s really sad but I see that in northern Canada where I now live. The MB church in my town,although popular with young families, has a Baptist minister,with Calvinist leanings. The church board is made of men who have done well financially or are just popular. They watch hockey and other sports,go hunting or quadding ,seldom read books and do not understand the scriptures because they have never attended a Bible school and don’t like to study the Bible. The care groups are social clubs. The stained glass windows are covered up with boards and bricks,illuminated with an orange glow. A lady (made the stained glass ones and is approaching 90 Her husband built a lovely communion table and pulpit,not being used, the organ and grand piano are out,taken over by an electric keyboard, hymns are no longer sung,coffee is slurped (and spilled) in the pews and most of all there is apathy and a desire to dominate,resulting in a lack,of love and respect especially for the elderly and widows. Adult Sunday school is also a thing of the past and only 3 or so men come to prayer meetings..Sunday evening services have been gone for years too. I’m sorry to sound so negative. Oh and choirs are definitely long gone. Where is the Mennonites love of music?? When you live 20 miles from church and the roads very full of ice and snow your motivation no attend slowly wanes. We pray for the MB church but we have been really disappointed the past 20 years.,,,,,,,interestingly my husband just got a call from the towns missions event planner and there too the Mennonites show very little interest. I have a friend with severe Parkinson’s in the care home and she gets almost no visitors. Nor does my mother,1000 miles to the south. Perhaps my blunt honesty will cause a few people to wake up and take notice. The MB church needs our prayers. In the end who do we think we are?

    My wife and I own a house and land in Belize, and we have been to Little Belize several times (we live very close to there). It's a picturesque community, and we've never interacted with unfriendly or "mean" people. We have good relationships with them, and have done business with many of 'em (a Mennonite built our interior house decor and shelving). We see many of them on the ferries, in the nearby towns, and along the streets of Corozal District. I've even had a beer with two of them at our community's local restaurant (no names will be named). 🙂 We even know some of the truck drivin', cell phone usin' "modern" Mennonites.
    It is sad, though, that they completely misunderstand Biblical doctrine, because they worship their traditions more than the actual God of the Bible. To see sin and evil in inanimate objects is just... silly. God NEVER said that modern appliances bar a person's entrance into Heaven. Faith in Christ gets one into Heaven, not adherence to ancient and unquestionable traditions. In fact, Jesus CONDEMNED those who cling to their traditions, and disregard the freedom of God's love shown to us through Jesus. Like I said - it's sad.

      @tommyapocalypse6096 - Thank You! I've seen some documentaries on similar communities, i.e. the Amish, and the people chronicled in video and conversation are impressive. In very positive ways and IMHO very negative ways. The strengths sell themselves: division of labor / serious work ethic / DIY lifestyle / communal support from cradle-to-grave / healthy living condition / admirable stewardship of resources / land / pro-family. Yet...and this is a big yet, and it was only in the communities recorded ( can't it's true of ALL of the Amish ), they had an Us vs Them mindset towards anyone ( yes, Christians, too ) who were outside their communities as The Lost or those of The System of Satan. That's ultimately sad, but a bit angering as well. I don't have to agree with everything very traditional Christian communities do and believe, but I do challenge myself to hold them in my mind and heart with respect and love as my fellow brothers and sisters. ( I'm not saint. Not virtue-signaling. ) Maybe many of them do as well ( Amish, Mennonites, Bruderhof, etc. ). Anyone, of any community/denomination, who fundamentally sows discord among the Church is committing an abomination before God. We should be very, very careful how we view our brothers and sisters in Christ.

      They may seem nice on the surface, but the male leaders in these types of communities give me abysmal vibes. That dinner scene with the 'Mayor' and his family made me feel so depressed for that entire family, look at the girls' faces at 12:50 onwards. I've seen better vibes at a fucking funeral than that, and that's every single day of their life through no choice of their own. To me, this shit is absolutely disgusting and deeeeeeply sad.

There is a neat aspect no doubt, but because it is closed off from society there is a lot of corruption and terrible things that happen in those communities. My home had personal, first hand experience. There is genuine people there though too that honestly want to do what's right for their families and they are trying to do the best with the knowledge they have.

      You could have said this particular kind of Mennonite. It sounds horrible beyond comprehension to me but .Iam 75 now and I was Born Mennonite. The privilege of the name should be taken away from them as they do NOT represent the majority of us. My grampas name was Abram and this is an insult to his name. He was a refugee from Ukraine in 1924. He worked for Mennonite Central Committee assisting refugees from war torn Russian Ukraine during the Russian revolution to Canada. I learned a lot from him as I was the eldest grandchild. My mother was a school teacher of 12 grades during WWII. My parents were babies when they came from Ukraine. I was aware of Mennonites who were unhappy with the Canadian school system and didn’t want their children to learn English so quite a few moved to Mexico where they lived in abject poverty. A few tried to come back and my grampa often had to meet them at the border crossings between Abbotsford BC and Vancouver. I wasn’t told much as a kid but I remembered strange events and my mother filled me in when I was in my 20’s and 30’s. It was often just pathetic, filth and starvation and new borns and their moms didn’t always make it.
      These men are not what they want you to think. Some of these people stayed with my grandparents till they recovered or churches found them lodging. I’m not sure if welfare was a thing in the 1940’s and 50’s but most of these people finally saw the light and adapted to English and Canada. Others stayed in Mexico or wandered even further south. All in order to keep things as they had been 150 or more years ago in Germany. It started around the time of the reformation. Our founder was Menno Simons a former Catholic priest or monk.Some Mennonites became extremely strict and narrow minded while others became successful farmers,especially after Catherine the great invited German farmers to come and toil the soil of Ukraine. They really prospered until the revolution although some came to the USA and Canada around 1875. I really don’t see how there could have been Mennonites in Belize before 1900. I think they have no idea what their history is and tell the media stories. I know the North American governments and Mennonite leadership was very frustrated with these STUBBORN people who refused to adapt to a new and wonderful land which they weren’t all that grateful to be in. In fact I can see still see my grandfathers pained face. These people simply weren’t grateful. Their God was their RULES. They lived and died by man made RULES. So did the Doukabors in southern B.C. They were a disgrace and influenced by insane leaders who burned their own farms down. These people could have hooked up with a Bruderhaus community or Hudderites which they must have heard about it but NO NO NO. All you suckers out there admiring them or thinking they seem wholesome and innocent THINK AGAIN.
