- I know lots of you have been asking about where I came from and why I look the way I do. It took mommy a few days because she works and had to get some back history. So here I go. My vet says I am approximately 15 years old (but we will never really know). I am a Goffins Cockatoo and we typically live 40-60 years.
I had a daddy a long time ago who loved me very much and I lived with him for a long time and then he died which made me very sad because I loved him a lot.
His family did not know what to do with me so I got passed around a lot. I ended up with one family member who put me in a basement by myself because they didn't like my yelling (I just wanted attention plus you know I am a bird and we do that). They got mad that I was still screaming so they put me outside for a long time by myself in a very small cage with no toys and only 1 perch. They weren't very nice and would yell and throw things at my cage when I would yell for attention. I stayed in my cage for 5 years and was never allowed to leave.
Eventually another family member came and got me and dumped me at a pet store where I lived for a year and they kept me in the same tiny cage and fed me sausage rolls and sausage McMuffins (how did I know this wasn't good for me?) They kept me covered because they didn't like my screaming either I swear I just wanted attention. The owner said I had to go.
One day this really nice lady came in and it was the first time anyone had tried to hold me in so long! I was so happy and she was such a nice lady I let her hold me and I was just so happy to have someone pay attention to me I went home with her! I lived with this nice lady for 2 years but sadly her mommy got very sick. She said her brain wasn't right anymore and would leave windows and doors open and would spray poisonous stuff around the house (it wasn't her fault she didn't know she was sick) so mommy thought the safest place for me would be to go to the rescue in the hopes that I would find another nice family that would understand and love me. She was so sad and cried but I know she only did it to make me safe.
The nice people at Florida Parrot Rescue took me in and my mommy and daddy (now) volunteered to foster me. They only had me for a few months before they fell in love me (I mean who couldn't love this!) and adopted me forever and ever.
For those that don't know birds like me who go through traumatic things like this it is very hard on us. Like you we bond very deeply with our humans and when they are mean we start bad habits sometimes kind of like when you guys bite your fingernails (feather pulling). Mommy and daddy are working on this with me but it's going to be a long process and I may never be able to get over the ugly people. But I know I am loved and mommy and daddy let me out to dance and hold me all the time! I eat really good now and they don't even mind it when I scream (probably because my birdie sister has a bigger mouth).
Anyway, I sure am happy now and now I get to dance my heart out for the rest of my life!

Yup it's weird but it tells you a lot about humanity. The fact that we would even assume a human did this tells you that it has happened one to many times.
That's the sad thing.
There are people out there plugging their cats claws, or they clue them...Just so a cat would not destroy the furniture.
So, watching your videos Griffi...it is heart warming. If you little love bird had the luck to find such good parents...why shouldn't an abused human be able to find a partner or at least friends and peace?!!!

@@griffithedancingcockatoo I had a lovebird who did this, and another lovebird that mutilated her wing pits. She had to wear a collar. Eventually the collar was made of light weight pipe insulation, secured with medical tape. My Avian suggested we try it. The collar began a security blanket for my girl. I understand your situation. The new feathers growing in itch. It's awful. You're doing an awesome job! Try the pipe foam for your other bird. It stopped my baby from getting scabs from moving her head. Don't pay attention to the ignorant, uninformed people. You're an angel!
I have to admit. When I first saw these videos it's exactly what I thought, so I scoured the channel to get an answer right away that wasn't that and came back totally relieved.

I’ve been following you both for quite some time now & I’m aware of the beautiful Griffi’s backstory. I lost my mum very suddenly 14 weeks ago, I’ve never felt so much raw pain, I miss her so much. I just wanted to say, we watched Griffi together, & she absolutely adored all of you. Thank you for creating memories for me that I’ll always cherish.

I would like to find those people who treated him so badly and abused him so cruelly. I would like them to receive the same treatment stuck in a dark basement for years without anyone, I just want you to imagine it. You were loved, dear, and suddenly they treat you badly, they abuse you, imagine the trauma for this little animal. Many of us love him. I hope this love reaches him wherever he is and I'm sure he will be with his first owner who loved him so much.

It’s so tough dealing with OCD in pets. I can’t believe people would think you’d pluck a bird…..but nothing surprises me in these times….that’s why I’d rather be surrounded by animals than people now

@@duczman76 I’m a huge animal lover and your absolutely right…when I lost my 17 year old kitty Jingles to sinus cancer I couldn’t sleep. I have other pets but he’d hold my hands at night and was always there. I lasted one month until I adopted an elder cat at 13 Miss Noodles .
@@wueen when i became my ginger tabby baby *rusty* (or how i called her often - the old reliable ship's diesel) she was just a hand full,but she curled up near my head and began to purr.a few minutes later i slept like a baby..we had a strong bond since then and she purred me 13 yrs into sleep and kept watch over me like a guard dog while i was sleeping.if someone came near me she growled and hissed loudly and somtimes she also gave them a blow with her paw in a flash.a friend who was visiting for a few days and just wanted to see if i was still awake told me the next morning that rusty was sharper than any guard dog because she protected me so well.i was really proud of her and no one need to tell me that cats only care for themselves and aren't as loyal as dogs.then i can say it like gunnery sgt.hartman always did - *bullshit!* 😂.too bad that re pet only exist in the movie the 6th day.unfortunately the "old reliable ship's diesel" passed the rainbow bridge 6 yrs ago because of bone cancer.but im grateful that i was allowed to spend 13 yrs with her.sometime I will have me again a cat as a roommate.but this time it should be one from the shelter,which no one wants to have and the animal should choose me as his new can opener, then i know that it also fits.then the animal mustn't spend his twilight years in the shelter.i grow up with cats and somehow something is missing without one of these furballs.

Griffi is absolutely gorgeous with or without feathers. She's such a little girl with a huge personality! Thanks for sharing your family with us. So many people don't realize how much care these birds need and how much they can suffer without the proper care. You guys are saints for rescuing and working with these often abandoned or abused creatures. Hopefully, sharing Griffi's story will help educate some people and keep a few from getting them without really being prepared for the commitment it takes.

Some people are just ignorant period!!! The obvious is obvious that she has a clean, healthy, caring, loving home (inviorment) !!! She obviously has anxiety issues due to her old upbringing, poor baby! Maybe ur vet can give her meds for anxiety, idk... anyhow, she's still a beautiful parrot inside & out & knows how to cut the rug dancing!!! New to her videos , & already fallen in love watching her! Keep up the excellent work with her, & ty for her videos..she brightness up my day!!!

I can but mom and dad keep the house at a fairly steady temp throughout the year so we don't go into shock during the weather changes
One of my neighbors adopted two birds that plucked. Her mom knitted little sweaters for the wintertime that zip down the back. It told her she should her her mom knit them ugly xmas sweaters for their ugly sweater party.

I had a cockatiel for 24 years he was never sick always happy but as he got older he started plucking his feathers around his neck after awhile he looked like he was wearing a helmet he was still cute but I couldn't understand why he had kept doing that he wasn't sick he had gourmet food tons of toys other bird friends but he just would pluck out even the new feathers that would grow back

but it so hard not being able to help them to grow the feathers back
I just accepted it and treated him like any other bird I had I loved him everyday and played with him lots of kisses as usual and attention 💕
he passed away a few years ago but he had a very happy life 24 years is a long time for a cockatiel to live
I do miss him he will always be my heart forever 💘

I honestly have sometimes wondered why she still plucks, although I did already know how it started. I hadn't thought about it like fingernail biting, though. That would explain it. Nervous habits are so hard to break! Poor Griffi! I'll bet moving was nerve wracking, too. I know for my nervous habits, they come back when the stress rises. I hope she'll get back to more feather growing, soon. I did have to laugh when you said they eat better than you do. Our dogs definitely eat better than we do! :)
Would a collar like Maya’s or something like that possibly help griffi with her feather plucking situation? regardless Griffi is in the best place for her well-being. Love from the UK.
You shouldnt have to explain to people over and over again. If some people are so stupid so they think you pluck her they won't understand when you try to explain anyway. We love you and Griffi and most of us understand perfectly that the plucking is a result of a bad life BEFORE she came to you

P.S. to anyone reading this: My Umbrella cockatoo is a plucker too. He is well cared for and loved tremendously. It is what it is. Some do this and it's nearly impossible to fully correct. What we can do is to love them even more and try to understand what they are going thru and not throw them away because they are not "perfect"... unbelievable how many ppl do.

As someone with Complex PTSD I totally get it. Which is why my service dog is a rescued pitbull that was found dumped on a back road with a partially crushed hip & all her toes broken because someone kicked her hard at 3 months old.
She's 13 & the only emotional sign of her trauma she still shows is she's fully submissive. Bless her heart though she's been a snuggler from day 1 with us.

I am so glad that you gave Griffi a second chance on life. While he my not look the best I'm sure that little bird is happier than he has been in a long time.
I found a Griffi video during covid lockdown. Watched you create a channel and learn how to.hold the camera steady. It was Griffi that got me interested in learning about these feathered beings at all. It was Griffi that taught me about self plucking. It was Griffi who stole my heart and showed me how intelligent and sensitive and loving these creatures are. It amazes me that people would have the idiotic thought that YOU are plucking her!!! When I first saw her I wondered about it but it only took five minutes on Google to understand what might be happening. You are the best parents to Griffi, don't ever let the haters get to you!! Your little family has brought joy to many!!
