At Davao Airport when you get in a taxi they put the meter on straight away. There is a security station at the exit. They stop the taxi and check everything is ok. They record the taxi number and take your name and give you a chit. If a taxi, at any airport won't put the meter on, get out and report them. It's well controlled now.
Great advice Sarge!! This isn't just for newbies, I've seen seasoned expats get ripped off too. A few points I'd like to add: 1. Use cut-proof security straps and bags with locking zippers, or hidden wallets for your phone, wallet, ID and money. 2. Always carry a fake wallet in risky places you might be robbed - expired ID, junk mail credit cards, a couple of fake family photos, business cards, a few dollars in cash. 3. Take pictures/videos of anything you rent before you rent it and after you rent it - focusing on any damage, if not you might have to pay to fix their pre-dented and scratched scooter or jetski. 4. Only deal with legit businesses, not someone that walks up and hands you a card or tells you he/she can get you the best deal on whatever. 5. Never follow anyone you don't know off the beaten path or into an alley for any reason. Keep up the good work Ace!

1:32 mark. What's that noise in the background? It's sounds like you tied up a Filipina in your room and won't let her escape. Is she yelling for HELP!!!
The one I hate are the 711 door beggars that expect money for opening the door for you. There is also the ones at the bus station that expect money to walk you and your luggage to the bus even though you didn’t ask them.
Just keep moving, don't even acknowledge their existence. If they follow you tell them to go away. If you see a security guard make eye contact and gesture towards the person bothering or harrassing you. Often times they will chase off the beggers for you.
One big scam I found while visiting the Philippines is they ask you to send them money for the taxi or bus fare. They never actually plan on going and they disappear.
Regarding renting any vehicle, if one must, I heard taking detail pics of the vehicle before you sign off on it. Apparently when you return it, they like to holler about damage that wasn’t on the vehicle when you got it but it’s there and you must pay. Until they see your pics. Not sure if that’s 100% liability protection, but just echoing what I’ve heard.
Hear a lot of pickpockets and robbers work on the jeepneys there in the Philippines. You can't go anywhere because you are stuck on a jeepney and if you yell you will get a knife in your side. They will even pickpocket you in a large church (they are so crowded) The suggestion for a fake wallet with a little cash and some bogus cards is a good idea. Good video, Ace...Jim
Don't wear flashy clothes or jewelry it makes you a mark. Keep your wallet in a front pocket or a velcro or zipper pocket. Cargo shorts, sure they're outdated, but the pockets secure.
What do you do when you realize you're being scammed? What do you do when the air b&b isn't right. What do you tell the trike driver? The massage therapist. The bartender, the restaurant billing? How do you handle it?
Like Benjamin Franklin said "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure". In other words, do your homework before you travel and don't get scammed in the first place. If you do, you're better off paying them off to get rid of them than putting yourself in a worse situation. Don't argue over pennies and end up costing yourself dollars.
I suffered #11 padded bill recently in Makati, in a KTV bar. 4 beers 1 hour singing later the bill was 4,800. After studying the bill (which I usually let go or don’t do I must admit) I saw the 1 hour singing was 2 hours bcoz it was 1 hour and 1 minute and they dont do minutes only hours uhmm.. then on top of all, 45% on top 20% for ‘service’ and 25% for tax. This time they pissed me off with explanations like there is new management, we are in Makati here it’s like that in Makati, the owner is Korean you want me to get him (threat?!). I said I will get the police. They did not let me go. I paid and left. After complaining to the police later on they came there with inpsector, 2 police car, etc. They almost closed down the place, and finally gave me back the overpaid amount. Korean KTV’s in Makati?;; be careful!
By the way there was also a 1,000PHP fruit platter that you MUST order if stay the KTV room (okay now I say it it really sounds like scam I know) that added on top of the bill too. Fruit platter well it was a few pieces of apple and 1 mango I think it would cost 100-200 max and was not fancy or special at all…
Fake alcohol sounds like the black market days when I was stationed there....lol also the padded bill those small drinking bars didn't bother with that it was pay as you order....cash on the bar or no beer. Only the bigger bars had mixed drinks the Ponderosa on MacArthur was a favorite hang out for most GIs....and beer was only 25 cents and we all knew the bottles on the back of the bar was watered down black market whiskey. lol

Davao is unique for safety and cleanliness. Duterte was major there and made it the scam free I guess.
Your smart girls in the other room is making a lot of noise, one of them are waiting for the white board 😅
