What a feast for photo-enthusiast's eyes this video is. The images are stunning and have Tom's trademark colours & vibrancy which I first saw many years ago in photography books. I keep telling myself I don't watch videos to learn as I became a passionate landscape photographer 35 years ago. I just watch them for enjoyment now. But the fact is we can't all remember everything and I am often reminded of tips & techniques when watching Tom's videos. 👍
Cheers Andy, always love reading your feedback!
And I always enjoy reading your replies Tom. Because there are some photographers who are far less respected and much less famous than yourself who don't even take the time to 'like' their viewers comments let alone reply to them. @@TomMackieLandscapes
Southwold is one of my favourite places - I even have a plaque on the pier! I was lucky enough to spend a week there in November, renting a cottage within 60 seconds walk from the Pier, and spent a glorious 2 hours one morning photographing dawn during high tide & strong onshore winds. The spray from the waves reached the beach huts behind you in your vlog, and I finally had to stop when I didn't have a square inch of lens cloth or indeed of dry clothing left to dry the camera! It was FANTASTIC and makes me grin just thinking about it !!! Can't recommend Southwold highly enough to photographers and visitors alike. And the cafe allows dogs, so they get to share a cheeky breakfast sausage too! Perfect!
Thanks Debbie - it is a great place indeed!
Hi Tom, your shots are very nice indeed
Great shots Tom. Lovely place Southwold but certainly blows up in winter at times. One of my favourite olde English seaside's. Love the colour in the sky with the long exposures.
Thanks Gary
Hi Tom, you never disappoint. Exellent shots.
We try to please!
Thank you for sharing...those last shots art end along the pier were amazing...I can only wish and aspire too.
Wow the second shot was awesome with the sun peeking through clouds, I'm going to start using long exposure even more now, I pressed the big red button and also rung the bell.
Thanks!
Another good video and some nice colourful images at the end
Thanks Paul
that last shot was killer! (all were) liked seeing the regular shot THEN the long exp. More on this topic please. liked and subscribed
Thanks! Was it long exposure stuff you enjoyed or the seascape topic? We aim to please!
@@TomMackieLandscapes specifically...seascape, and HOW to again in slo mo.. actually atm I am visiting the ocean, and so far, my photos suck! Not sure what the heck is going on. Other than I had settings on for birds last, and My mind goes absolutely blank when Im on the spot. Guess its the excitement of the moment, smell of the sea air, and seeing a pr of bald eagles. Im having touble with my focal settings. AND, just got a new more advanced camera (pictures were better on the easier camera) so I know its just me.... hope that defines "More please". Your shots were so beautiful. My camera isnt doing what my eyes see. Thanks again so much
Good explanation of how to shoot a beautiful long exposure image of the crashing sea. Concise, well edited, thanks for sharing.
Thanks Martin, much appreciated
Looking forward to the coming videos this year Tom...
Thanks
I like the movement in the clouds, but I prefer the detail of the water in the first image. Thanks for sharing
Cheers Tony
Just found your channel! Short, concise videos with so many good tips!
Thanks!
Very nice images for sure! It would be helpful to know what focal length was used since depth of field is a concern.
I was using the 24-70mm lens and the distance that I was from the foreground rocks, depth of field wouldn't be much of an issue. You could get away with an aperture of f/8 or f/11.
As always - good stuff tom. I appreciate your eye for the detail. The horizon fits perfect with the pier and leads me into the image, right to the hot spot.
Thanks Markus
Great vlog Tom, love the long exposures. Southwold is one of my favorite locations on the east coast. You're right it's definitely best to visit in the winter when the cold keeps the crowds away.
Thanks Steve
Another brilliant production Tom, great informative guidance and Thankyou for the settings that can be used with which filters. January weather,,,,,welcome home💯🤓👍📸🤪
Cheers Chris - yep lots of cold videos on the way!
Cool video
Good to see you back out of the office Tom, great video ;)
Cheers Glenn - its not always possible to shoot on location and have been away a lot over the last few months. Glad you liked it and thanks for feedback.
Cool video nice
Great shots Tom and a very good instructional video, gives you all the relevant information for photographing the perfect seascape thoroughly enjoyed the video.
Thanks Kevin and great to hear/read!
It would be nice to see the exposure you used on your final shots. Great shots, Thanks
Noted!
Love love those shots! What I particularly like is so many LE images are made into B&W, but you retain and enhance color with yours. The bw ones are lovely too, but these colors blow me away. Getting ready for a trip to Norway (Lofoten) and hope to utilize your lessons. Also I had to chuckle when you were naming your exotic locations and I think you added United States to the list.
Thanks as ever Janet. Might see you in Lofoten which is next stop with my workshops!
Stunning images. This is a great channel, lots of no nonsense useful info, no distractions with irrelevant flying drone footage and other padding.
That's very nice video! It might be much better if you added the sitting on that series pictures :)
Looks a cool location. I find LE images with busy/strong foreground & midground subject matters need a quiet blank sky otherwise there is too much going on with the strong sunrise colour plus the contrasty clouds - the eye of the viewer cannot settle. It is like having flowery curtains, flowery wallpaper and a flowery carpet in your living room! :-)
Wow, such different shots to mine.
I went on Saturday morning, and it was calm with a much more bland sunrise
Luck of the draw I guess Will - worth another a trip. Great location.
Hi Tom,
Great video on Long exposure seascapes. Quick question about your poloriser, you said that you tend to keep it on your filter holder most of the time. I guess that it will be 1 to 2 stops, does that not really impact on the exposure times with the 15 stop filter?
I have the Formatt-Hightec 16 stop and another one or two stops might mean a long weekend exposure 😉
Has a slight bearing which I allow for, but depends on the scene.
Hello Tom,
I live on Bribie Island, Queensland, Australia and admire your descriptive comments. By the way, what is that instrument you have hanging around your neck.
cheers Kerry
Hi Kerry - its a hoodman loupe - link in the video description. You live in a great spot. Thanks for feedback.
Beautiful work, is this straight out of the camera, or after post process?
Mainly in camera, but a light touch on a few things
Fab shots Tom, LOVE that moody sky. Haven't been there since the early 90's, must do the East coast again, thanks for the inspiration.
Thanks Jeff
Great video and great shots! Awesome! Quick reminder tho, it's ISO, not 'Eye Ess Oh'. It's a word, not an acronym 😜
You made it into our recent Cotswolds video with this feedback!
@@TomMackieLandscapes Please explain what 'Cotswold' means? Never heard of it so I had to Google it, and all I got was...
CotswoldDictionary result for Cotswold
/ˈkɒtswəʊld/Submit
noun
1.
a sheep of a breed with fine wool, often used to produce cross-bred lambs.
2.
Double Gloucester cheese containing chives and onions.
adjective
1.
relating to the Cotswolds.
Care to elaborate?
@@PossMcLeod Nothing to be concerned by - had assumed you had seen our recent video from the Cotswolds: th-cam.com/users/edit?o=U&video_id=PNQvkqeVxmw
@@TomMackieLandscapes Will check it out now haha
What ND filter did you use .you didnt tell us. it is realy important info for a tutorial
Hi Franky - sorry we missed that, will pick it up next time, although the relevance is only to that moment in time obviously, but I get your point! Thanks for watching and feedback. All the best.
@@TomMackieLandscapes hi no problem. But I have a question. I hope you can help me. I like to use an Nd filter app. I have different apps. But the exposure times have different numbers like 1/8000 and so on. In the nikon D800 there are different numbers. All without the/ what are the right expusere numbers so it is the same in the app. I hope you understand my question. Now I have no idee how long I have to exposure with the filters.
Tricky for me to comment on other filter systems, but with Lee (who I use) they have a reliable app and also a chart with each filter. I personally tape these to the back of the filter box when I get one new and then refer to that. I find it so much quicker than fiddling with an app, especially in cold conditions where you may have gloves on. Once you have taken you light reading based on no filter in place then just adjust as per the guide for the relevant filter. Hope this helps.
@@TomMackieLandscapes thank you verry much. Realy appreciate it. And your work and tutorials are realy good. And you go easy in explaining.
Shots are amazing just need more application than lecture
And how??
???
Landscape Photography iQ how were these photos taken? Settings ? Mod?
I did go through this on the video I thought, where I talk about which filters I use and why, 30 second exposure time, F14 aperture setting, confirm my iso, discuss my composition and why I did it that way. Also the settings I used are only useful to that moment in time based on that light and the conditions on that day. Hope this helps, good luck!
Landscape Photography iQ thank you
;)
