    • @Lifeovdavid
      @Lifeovdavid 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      EXACTLY! Like if theres no pad to grab then they'll hold him forcing a penalty.

    • @RyTrapp0
      @RyTrapp0 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Lifeovdavid It's not about the penalty - it's about the SACKS. If an O-lineman gets beat by Bennett and has to grab up on his shoulder pads instead of grabbing inside on the outer edges of the chest piece of the shoulder pads like is explicitly legal technique, then it doesn't matter if he keeps a measly little 5yd holding penalty or not if he can save his QB from a sack & a bigger loss of yardage. But, Bennett's pad choice is about preventing O-linemen from grabbing ahold of him AT ALL, legally or otherwise.

  • @BartBasquiato
    @BartBasquiato 5 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    The announcers said it on a game when he was on the Seahawks that he did it so his tackling technique was on point because if you tackle wrong you'll get hurt because you dont got the pads

      Bodacious_jev no it’s a new technique where you crab the top of the pads and control the guys lateral motion in exchange for leverage. It’s legal holding and is the best pass rushing technique in the nfl

      The goal is to get underneath the shoulder pads wym

    • @Staticknight23
      @Staticknight23 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah then somehow he stretched the video out to 10 minutes

    • @RyTrapp0
      @RyTrapp0 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jesuschrist912 That's by no means a "new" technique - that's straight up O-line pass blocking 101, you grab each side of the chest piece of the shoulder pads to control these SIGNIFICANTLY quicker players(the athletes playing D-line/LB today vs these slower giants playing O-line). Not only has this been standard practice, but it's about the only explicitly legal form of "holding" allowed.
      This is also why Bennett talks about sticking his arms out, using his hands, and not cheating his technique be attempting to throw a shoulder in there or something - pass rushers need to use their hands & arms to prevent the O-lineman from getting inside on them and getting ahold of that chest rig. This is where techniques like swim moves, chopping and clearing the arms, D Lawrence's technique of grabbing ahold of the O-lineman's outside arm with both hands after he's beat them outside, and dipping his inside shoulder down to the ground, using the lineman's arm to pivot around to the backfield.
      The whole battle at the line of scrimmage is about who can get their hands inside first. If you aren't one of these freak athletes that can run around the edge like guys are standing still, or have an unstoppable bullrush or something, it all comes back to that hand technique, O-line and D-line.

    Looking at old clips of Franco Harris, Jack Ham, Jack Lambert, Mean Joe etc etc (Steelers fan for life here). I sure seen them wearing a lot of padding and it sure looked like they were moving pretty fast and well, and kicking major butt to me….of course I was a little kid in the 70’s. Franco sure had on those hip pads when I saw him make that immaculate reception touchdown. And I don’t know what these guys are trying to look like and for who on screen….but men in big shoulder pads and form fitting little pants…..uuhhhhhhh is definitely and extremely pleasant to look at!!!!. Nowadays, they all look like they are about 20 years old, don’t get enough food and aren’t done growing all the way up yet.

  • @DerekGonzo2
    @DerekGonzo2 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    You can move your arms better and higher with smaller pads which is important to wide recievers and defense backs. For d lineman, like Bennett said, he can use his arms better and ensures he used proper technique every time. Whoever made this video and said that both of those factors are “placebos” and didn’t make sense has obviously never played football

The Rules of the game are completely different compared to the game of football a decade ago. This too is a large factor.

    Shoulder pads aren't much of a big deal depending what position you play, I never played with a cup, thought it fucked with my mobility, even if I had a few close calls i still wouldn't use one, i honestly loved shoulder pads being a decent size I was I linebacker and spin moves worked so well with them I'd get a holding call or a really nice spin move and get the tackle right off the spin or seconds from it, honestly depends on how people feel with their shoulder pads

    Personally the smaller shoulder pad do help. I traded my big shoulder pads for smaller ones and I can stretch my arms anywhere and they are much lighter

    I'm honestly surprised that the NFL even allows shoulder pads that damn small on a Defensive lineman.

    the actual pads are made for kickers and QBs... they're modified though. the side piece cups get cut off all the way and the top epaulets get cut in a little bit to give him that small pad size. It makes sense for him to do this for a greater range of motion, but this is borderline not safe for him.
