The NFL let LaDamian Tomlinson wear a tinted face shield for his whole career. For one reason. Going back to his days at TCU he has a sensitivity to glaring light that would cause migraines. That had been documented for three years before he even enter the league so they gave him an exemption.

I do believe that a large part of this comes down to limiting player empowerment. By not allowing for individuality in their gear, the players become much less distringuishable from their peers and it become harder for them to stand out, making them seem more interchangeable and less valuable as individual contributors in the scope of team success. This leads to less bargaining power and leverage in contract negotations over time.
Has exactly zero to do with these rules. It's a team game and allowing a competition for fashion attention would take away from the game. The NFL has built an impressive product due to its focus on such details.

Commenters don't realize that not allowing other brands adorn their players increases the advertising value of the NFL which in tern translates to higher salaries for the players. Just because you get away with it for a while, doesn’t make it acceptable. Just because your accessory sends a nice message, doesn’t mean it’s not against the rules. The fact there are so many people breaking these rules, intentionally, and for their own momentary gain, tells you exactly why the rules exist. Imagine how out of control this would get if the NFL just allowed players to do what they want? With all these rules and fines, there are athletes constantly trying to get away with breaking them. It would be out of control so fast and the game would quickly turn into players trying to “one-up” each other, or prioritizing “There brand,” whenever possible.

There are thousands of NFL players, coaches and other staff. Of course they need to define rules like "no personal messages" because otherwise, who should judge wether or not a personal message is acceptable or not. The next player comes up with a racist or politically extreme personal message...no, no...this is a team sport, if they want to make a statement, use media

Commenters don't realize that not allowing other brands adorn their players increases the advertising value of the NFL which in tern translates to higher salaries for the players. Allowing brands to be advertised "for free" by a player indirectly stifles the value of the league in the eyes of potential advertisers.
