My twist is to caramelise (extra flavour) the onions in a pot, then add the hydrated split peas and I ALWAYS use bacon bones for extra flavour. A touch of garlic is yummy as well. My kids will always come from far and wide for my pea soup. Love from Australia.

Split Pea Soup - How To Make Split Pit Pea and Ham Soup 2318pm 26.8.23 i said caramelize th' onions... but was pooh-poohed by the olds from the depths of the 'eld hearth and home brigade ie: the old women who know best. and for the hated veggie twist... those veggie faux meat slices you can chop up and throw in for added flavour or..... faux hot dogs cut up into pieces and added after they have been boiled in the pan. that tastes pretty nice..... tonight? homemade bread and split pea and leek soup.

I must have skipped over like 5 other split pea recipe videos and decided that yours - like always - is the best. You don't sit there and talk about your life story and the impact the soup had on your as a child for 12 minutes. You just start in with "here's what we're making, let's go" and it's fantastic.

I didn't have any ham, but I used cut up smoked kielbasa sausage. Worked out great! My second attempt was to carnalize the onions, brown the ham, and then add the rehydrated peas. I also used homemade chicken broth rather than water. Dayuum...this was a dish fit for a processing plant with a humongous freeze-drying machine! And yes, don't forget the Bay leaves! I also used my microplane grater to grate in a couple of garlic cloves. Thank you Mr. Wolf for providing the guidance to deviate from the basic recipe!

Split pea soup is eaten in Finland a lot, but we soak the whole peas for 12 hour, and then boil them. Smoked bones and ham and marjoram are added and simmered for few hours. Eaten with mustard and onion. Excelent stuff.

It has been a decade since I've made split-pea soup. We're guests at an Easter dinner tomorrow so I won't have a nice ham bone to simmer to make it. In lieu of that, I bought some ham steaks this afternoon to make a pre-Easter dinner of split pea soup and ham.
I used your recipe with a simple Cook's bone-in sliced ham steak. I made a half pot but went ahead and used the entire ham steak which was close to 1.5#. Nothing wrong with a bit more meat!
It was delicious. Thanks for sharing this recipe.

Mmmm, cornbread! I usually don't like sweet cornbread but I I wanted another recipe to use up some super coase ground cornmeal I had (called "Red Floriani") so I tried the Bob's Red Mill cornbread recipe on the medium grind cornmeal package. I made double the quantity and baked it in a hot 12" cast iron skillet. I sliced the cold leftovers into thick slices and froze them stacked as is unwrapped in thin plastic clamshell food containers. When I wanted to reheat some I just toasted pieces in my air fryer. That toasted the outside made it into a wonderful cornbread rusks! Still tender on the inside but golden brown outside. Best rusks you could wish for! So make more cornbread than you need and make rusks quickly whenever you wish!

Finally an American who seems to know what he's doing with this dish. I've seen some put in liquid smoke, and saying you want some of the split peas with still a bite, and more of that nonsense.
    This clip is just good.
I'd personally put in leeks instead of onions, and a cup of cubed celeriac is great, but your recipe is very clear and easy to follow, and the end dish looks great.

Really like this recipe. Only thing I did different was I sauteed the onions, carrots, ham cubes, and minced garlic first, giving it a richer, roasted flavor. Then I added them to the boiling peas. Near the end I took your advice and added some half and half. This soup turned out so good, I couldn't believe it. One of the reasons why is because I haven't made split pea soup with ham in over 40 years. Your recipe was presented so well that it gave me the confidence to give it a try again.

Your favorite corn bread recipe with diced onion mixed in the batter and cook as usual.
I use about two cups corn meal mix, a 14 1/2 ounce can of cream-style corn, an 8-ounce carton of sour cream (with the whey) two jumbo eggs, 1/4 cup corn oil (but only if I don't have bacon drippings),. large diced onion, mix well and bake at 450 in a seasoned preheated cast iron skillet for 30 to 45 minutes 'til the color is right (you'll know it when you see it). Goes perfectly with any soup or stew.

Thank you. Great video. Direct to the point. Some videos do to much talking. And you added salt when done, so it will not be to salty from meat. And you can add cream at the end if you like. Excellent video.😁

I have always used ham bone or some chunks of ham I love. I tried ham hocks twice. Threw out both due to funky smell and taste. Separate brands of hocks.

I cheated myself by making this in a pan, it's not enough. Now I'm making this in a 3 gallon stock pot, And freezing 10ea. 1 quart meal portions. The fresh balance I eat for a few days. I tried whole fingerling potatoes and whole smoked turkey thighs and shreaded the turkey after a 3 hour simmer. Too satisfying

Sir, I made your soup and added two smoked pork neckbones. The smokey neckbones added a slot of flavor but destroyed the nice green color. Despite that, I'd do it again!
I ate two bowls of soup and realized I was really darn full. I wobbled off to bed and the soup must have cured and expanded in my stomach. I was considering calling an ambulance if it got much worse. I was sort of scared because I realized the soup would probably clog the stomach pumping machine.
Its been 3 hours and I'm still darn full ... its maybe the most delicious thing I've ever had. Thank you! When I do it again, I'm going to use smoked sausage with some kind of smoked pork bone.
