I love this game's use of symbolism and metaphor. I've seen multiple interpretations of what exactly the Mouthwash represents; it can read as Jimmy's initial attempt to crash the ship and kill the crew ("gets rid of 99%") then his later attempts to clear out the "bad taste" he's left and cleaning his reputation by acting like a savior/hero, when in reality he can't fully get rid of the the evidence of his crimes, because he can't kill Curly ("gets rid of 99%"). I would add that Jimmy is basically doing something similar to Pony Express. Pony Express has all of these cute little posters and a cute little mascot to present a clean image, but they can't get rid of the truth; they're a bad company that compromises the safety and health of their employees. Jimmy acts like a hero and at the very end of the game, he's done mental gymnastics to convince himself that he's a Good Guy. That he's "clean." In reality, mouthwash doesn't kill 100% of germs. Pony Express is not a good company. Jimmy most certainly is not a hero.

The interpretation I like the most is comparing it to the dead pixel that Anya can see but Curly cannot. The 0.01% of germs is often overlooked and cannot be seen unless looked at under a microscope, similar to how Anya's experience often is very difficult to notice unless you are personally involved

Also, what a bunch of subverting expectations! Reading the summary: a crew lost in space", you think of any horror scenarios. Pehaps food shortage drives them to violence? Perhaps there's monster on the deck? Will they starve, fight each other, how can you, captain keep order in such conditions?
But as it turns out, of all of them, only one really went mad. Only one monster crawled the hallways. Only one was overtaken by despair and fought against everyone else.

I don't have the stomach for horror media, but somehow experiencing it second hand like this makes it easier to appreciate. Thank you for sharing this game. Everything about it is so oppressive and upsetting, but it's so well made.

Jimmy is an unexcuseable villian. There is no justifying his actions, there's no excusing anything he did.
However, people tend to just equal jimmy = evil and bask in it.
In long, long haul, he was flirting with a woman, who didn't like him. In fit, he forced himself on her.
He thought that that deed will go unpunished - unnoticed, even. She forgave him, too.
But then.. in the span of a single day, not only he learnt that he's losing any source of income and future he was working towards, ground crumbling under his feet, he also will not be able to escape consequences of his actions. In fact, he won't be able to run anywhere.
*Thrashing, screaming beast, you can't run from.*
Pressure, fear and selfishness, trying to hide his actions under lies, that kept piling up.
So, in despair, under that pressure, he took the steering wheel and drove the car off the cliffside.
...and oh, irony, even then, failed at that.
His evil is banal, human things, piling up and overpowering him. Pushing him to more and more extreme forms of derangement, if only to excuse himself, as even when sentencing everyone to doom, he still cannot outrun his own thoughts.
Always repeating about wanting to be responsible, but failing to take responsibility for even one thing. Slowly, gradually, drawing the worse and worse out from a human weakness.
Can you say for sure that you would be okay if put in the same situation?
It fills me with unpleasant shiver when i read chat and comments under Mouthwashing playthroughs. People SHOULD always condemn everything he did. It's disgusting, it's repulsive, it's wrong..
    BUT
Condemn is all we should do.
When people start to SPITE Jimmy, acting all mighty and superior, *joking* about how he should be [redacted], [redacted] and [redacted] - and laughing about it! - you're becoming monster yourself. It's even scarier knowing people do the same towards real people, not just fictional characters.

I'm sorry but yes you should be rightfully angry at Anyone who acts like jimmy does.
      And beyond that
What an insane statement to say Anya forgave him she did not.
She helplessly wanted to spare her suffering by appeasing jimmy making him feel like the captain he wanted to be and always passive around him.
      She was scared, terribly scared.
anyone that can see the suffering he caused, has all the right to condemn and shun him.
Any victim of a situation like this would act the same like Swansea did.
We as viewers, can place ourselves in the same place and come to the same conclusion.
And for you to say that irl people shouldn't recieve this treatment of ire.
I hope you're only talking for unjust reactions because if it someone who has anything similar to jimmy.
      Your point is entirely moot.
Every human being has a right to live but if you think that others will not be reacting to you if you live in a disgusting life like his is insane
No matter their upbringing someone terrible should be shunned however people wish.
The law will deal with them as appropriately as they should, because thats the only fairness they should have.
But people's opinions on someone like jimmy shouldn't be controlled for that person's sake.
Sorry but I heavily disagree as a person who's had my own long encounter with a Jimmy before.
If he didn't have the actions he did he would be forgivable but he acted
      He didn't just think.
he acted, acted out every single thing in his twisted mind
Shaped by his rough life? Yes
But he should be punished through hell and back just the same.
Just because he's in a sorry situation doesn't change what he did.

@@Yahioo1233 I have never said he should be excused, not even by an iota. But do not lift yourself over anyone else with spite.
So many times people use the same reasoning in real life. Find a current "public enemy number one" and excuse their own feeling *genuine pleasure*, rejoicing in trashing the person. Not because person did something horrible, but because it makes them feel superior.
He didn't think, he was selfish, he did something awful, and worse yet, thought he could get away with it, until he found himself trapped.
He was not the human meat eating, murking megalomaniac from the start, it was rotting him gradually, making him worse and worse the worse the situation got.
You don't just brand a person "evil" as excuse to horrible things you want to do to them. You understand the person did evil things, what led there, and you understand why are those things evil and why you should not be like that. You "condemn" not ''spite".
So when you look at the mob of ravenous dogs, rejoicing in depictions of violence over human - even fictional, rotten and irredeemable - you can't help but feel the cold shiver knowing that another day, it will not be fictional person they will target to fuel that craving for self-validation.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts! It is an interesting perspective.
I think what Jimmy did was full on monster in the closet, unrelatable eldritch cosmic horror evil. It is unrelateable. People get laid off. People get rejected. People get classified as a "loser". People get the short stick in life. But people do not do what Jimmy did here. It is not banal. It is extraordinary creative. It is something only a monster would do.
What Curly did was the evil of banality. He wanted to help his friend. So he turned a blind eye and didn't realize his "friend" had already turned into a flesh eating monster.
The proper response to a crime is to enact justice, either retributive or restorative. In either case, Curly failed. He did not enact justice, which would be to punish Jimmy for his acts, or to lock him up so he will not cause any more harm.
We could disagree on degree of action to take against Jimmy, but act the very least, Curly should have incapacitated him to prevent further harm to his crew. Curly is a banally evil and ineffective leader.

@@horoboro6537@Yahioo1223 Exactly! Curly and Jimmy's relationship is toxic af. Curly woundn't be a so bad leader if Jimmy wasn't there to manipulate C in defending him, and Jimmy woundn't have been able to act under a right chief.
Just with the doubt of a harassment, a relatively good chief or a good person would have at least spoke to the presumed victim and the presume aggressor. C linked so fast the dots about the violence without any name being told. Even without doing something to J, speaking with the crew to find a solution would have been something, considering the inhuman working conditions.
I had hope for C, but tbh I think Curly helping Jimmy for his past troubles is just a previous case of C covering up for J, since J laments about his lost reputation. I don't know what you mean with banally evil, but yes, C is a bad person and a bad friend to J, preventing any possible growth.
Saying Jimmy is totally unrelatable is not really right, however. Let it be clear that I think he should stay in prison, but being afraid of responsability can be a common trait in smaller things (where there's no killing or serious violence involved). I myself feel a bit like that, that's creepy af while thinking of J, but I really hate violence and I find it terrifying.
I spite people such as Jimmy, wishing the worst to them, like I'm an avenging hero (that I am not), but that's my emotional part, that want to feel only for the victim, in other stories it force me to find the victim, even if there's not a real victim. The the law is there for this reason too: it punishes who did bad, avoids people to do bad to 'get the score even'. I think many people could relate to my feeling on this. Another streamer said he felt sorry (provare pena) for C and J and stood strong in his opinion the both are really wrong and evil at the same time, I don't know how he can do it, but he studied law so maybe it's that. I would be a better person if I take pity for them, but at most I feel for C.
