One year my daughter helped me plant peas and was really enjoying digging. She planted the peas as deep as her 4 year old arm could reach. I decided to keep my words to myself and planted an extra row with my own technique. Imagine my surprise when they all sprouted! Life is so surprising.
I just received my books!! Thank you so much!! I would have a hard time leaving that beautiful greenhouse. I would just need my paint and easel and a comfy chair and I probably wouldn’t leave. ❤
loving my mandrake sprout, my order delivered on the Full Moon, So happy I could grow one from a seed. I talk to it. I’ve never grown anything before so I’m surprised it’s growing so well.
I wish I could afford your books, better yet come work for knowledge. I learn so much from this man. So much knowledge and get teaching style. I pray this man gets blessed beyond our imagination. He brings life to us all, if only we apply what we learn. Thank you so much for your help in my journey to health and wellness And happiness.
I got the glorious garden seed set as well as Growing Plant Medicine and Making Plant Medicine a couple months ago and it’s been such an amazing joy to see everything come together. I’m in love with this
First, you had me smiling several times. I thoroughly enjoy your enthusiasm and ways of honoring the plants and putting in your intent. We often put seeds into our mouths before planting so that they grow as to our individual nutritional needs. Do you make your potting soil moist before planting? I see how deep your flats are. I always thought they should be more shallow so that the plants don’t put all their energy into the roots. I imagine you recommend not to use commercial seed starting mixes. That they’re too loose and idk perhaps sterilized. Use potting soil instead…make our own if possible and of course make it according to the needs of each type of seed.
I have a question about timing on the stratification planting. I can't tell what time of year you're filming, other than it clearly springtime, so . . . My first frost is Nov. 1 - 15, and last frost is Mar. 20 - Apr. 5. Based on these frost dates, when should I plant flats that need time in a shade house for 60 days? For these types of seeds, do you soak them and water the flat before you put it in the shade house? Since you have an open-air shade house, do you protect the flats from snow? Will the seeds still be viable after a long stretch of freezing temps, wet freezing temps? I love this technique and have a setup that will allow me to do it, just need to understand the process a little better and learn which seeds need this kind of care. 🙏🕉
hi there, Thanks for contacting! The best time to plant any seed is the same season that it drops naturally from the plant in habitat. Any artificial stratification (prechill) is designed to mimic that process. The number of days and other relevant details are all species-specific and printed on the seed packet for that species. I also recommend reading and/or referencing "Growing Plant Medicine Vols 1 and 2" for more complete information. Soaking in water before planting is sometimes recommended for larger seeds but is impractical for small seeds. Certain species germinate best when snow chills the flats--Gentiana and Rhodiola for instance. Long periods of wet alternating with frost are particularly helpful for wild-derived medicinal herb species including for instance Sambucus and Aralia. Yes, you're going in the right direction. Research and experiment. Richo
And thank you for the guidance. I have both of your books in a cart and am going to buy tonight, was out in the garden until dusk. Love your videos, learn so much and appreciate your way with plants. @@StrictlyMedicinalLLC
I don't have a video on this. I recommend reading "Growing Plant Medicine Vols 1 and 2" that thoroughly discusses Astragalus. Also, we have really nice astragalus seeds and plants available right now (spring 2024) at Strictly Medicinal Seeds.
I think about how, if plants are just grown in wild, they don’t go thru all this; the seeds just fall to the ground or are carried by animals, and they grow fine. Why do people have to do all this? Please enlighten me, someone, so I understand.
Right! They go through an animal’s digestive system before falling to the ground. Not all seeds are so finicky but it makes sense that we would need to mimic ideal conditions for the best results.

I've been starting seeds for 20 years and have never heard someone explain the process so well! I'm taking away new knowledge. Thank you, sir!
my pleasure, i am sure that both if us have learned a great deal from years of experimentation and yet. . . there are still surprises in there for us.

You're in Southern Oregon? I'm in Coos Bay. Omg. I might have to come visit at some point in my rare plant journey if that's okay.
Thank you! This is very helpful.
Thank you, you explain very clearly.

You're mimicking the most ideal condition a seedling could hopefully have.
