@@stephaniesanderson7970 Absolutely. Herbert talked about it being a warning against charismatic leaders. He was also worried people would only read the first book and misunderstand his criticism of the Hero.
I mean, in one way it is a savior story. Depends on how much you are revealing and restricting the frame of reference across space and time. Paul's definitely a hero in the beginning. But, hero with power, easily turns into villainy. The claim about "white savior" is just idiotic. I'm just like Agustin, I wanted to see the continuation of this story cos it grips me the way Lord of the Rings did.. when a movie three hours long just melts away and leaves me wanting more, thats where I'm invested for the long run.
Lord of the Rings takes a a very huge, omnescient view of Middle Earth. It is epic to have a God's eye view of a complete world, and see all moving parts and to see what it takes to accomplish monumental goals. Dune has a universe of epic scope (the most Epic imo, multiple planets and such), but chooses to hyper-focus on the one thing/peoples who controls the absolute functioning of humanity, the spice. It is the logistical, economic, philosophical, violent exploration of everything this spice touches and the ones who truely control it. I love me some LoTRs, but going hyper-detailed into the effects one thing has on the universe is beyond epic to me.
Essentially, Dune did for the Sci-Fi genre what LoTR did for the Fantasy genre. Completely revolutionized it, and its effects still be seen on those genres today.
I don't see it as "going out on a limb" but I am telling everybody that Austin Butler may just end up stealing the movie. He is a really talented young actor and the PERFECT choice to play Feyd...Wow, Nov 3, 2023 is going to be a painful wait lol!
Villeneuve is going to finish this Dune trilogy with the 3rd movie covering the Dune Messiah book. This essentially complete’s Paul’s character arc, even if Paul lives past Messiah into Children of Dune in the books.
Btw, the one who looked like Matt Smith is Austin Butler. Also, I'm really hyped for Part II 🙌🏻 Dune was definitely my favorite film of the year in 2021.
Bang on: "That's not HOPE!" is the clearest signal yet that the film is going to presage the theme of how bitter the consequences of Paul's "ascent" will be for all concerned... Even the first Dune book (let alone the Lynch film) left readers with the impression that Paul was, in fact, the hero of the story rather than the tragic figure Herbert always intended him to be. To properly seal the deal, Villeneuve has to do not just the "Dune Messiah" adaptation but also that of "Children of Dune" (i.e. all the way to Paul's death and the legacy he'll end up leaving to his son...)
I think Villeneuve did a good job of subtly hinting at the subversion of the trope. Lynch's Dune just dropped the subversion entirely and made Paul an actual messiah.
If you do Children, you have to do God Emperor. Otherwise you end up with the triumphant ending where Leto II becomes this unstoppable force, but none of the consequences of his 3,500 year tyrannical rule over the empire, brutally repressing all of humanity in the name of the Golden Path.
@@FrenchCelt I kind of thought the fact that Paul's cold feet in NOT taking the "Golden" Path - and effectively condemning his son to do the dirty deed instead, thereby sacrificing his humanity over thousands of years of atonement for the sins of the father - is the perfect cap to Paul's tragic arc. Since I can't imagine how anyone could make a commercial film out of the oh-so-philosophical "God Emperor", I imagined the filmmaker would simply end his adaptation of "Children" by showing a vision (which would have been both Pauls's and Leto II's) of the horrific future that awaited the latter during the lead-up to the events of "God Emperor" as a result of Paul's effective lack of courage in following through on the only survival path for humanity...
Hope they make Dune Messiah. It’s an incredibly important part of Paul’s character development. And it’s pretty short, short enough to do it justice in one film.
The director is planning another movie to complete his “trilogy”, Dune Messiah, which reportedly will be basically the third book with some bits of the Fourth book. It all depends on the success of this film of course. The director is not planning on going beyond that.

You mean the second book, right ? Dune Messiah is the second book and includes what Paul has been fearing from the start: Being trapped in his premonitions, not daring to walk the Golden Path. Starting the Fremen Jihad without being able to stop it.
I'm just continually in awe of how incredible all aspects of this film are. The score, the cast, the writing, the cinematography. Just absolute perfection.

I have such high hopes that the opening scene is Paul 'giving water to the dead', shedding a tear at Jamis's unnecessary death. Honestly, the "I was a friend of Jamis" scene from the Dune (2021) was actually an improvement over the book, which is a rare achievement indeed. "Jamis taught me that when you kill... you pay for it. I wish I'd known Jamis better." is certainly poignant enough, but Paul is participating in the ritual and reflecting on how he doesn't like killing. Gholas aren't just clones...they can retain all the memories of the original, including sense of identity. The Duncan Idaho gholas are all Duncan Idaho, essentially perfect copies. As opposed to, say, the clones in Star Wars. They aren't all Jango Fett. They all have a sense of individual identity distinct from Fett.
If he sticks to the book as best as he can in the time he has, it would be practically impossible to argue that Denis Villenueve is not the best Sci-Fi director of the modern times. Given his other incredibly smart movies like Arrival - possibly of all time.
I can't speak for all the later books but they're pretty good even if writen but someone else. They go off of Herberts notes, so they're not just completely made up.

Would love to see the back story of Baron Harkonnen (Stellan Skarsgård). For those who did read the books, his daughter is never revealed in the original movie. I believe it's critical to establish his back story. Fand who haven't read the books would be shocked!
I genuinely can’t wait for part two! The first was fantastic and having read some of the books I’m really excited to see more of the story realized on screen.

This is the first time I've ever sat in a theatre (IMAX and 3D even) and thought, yeah, you totally don't need to see this in the theatre, people watching at home on HBO MAX are missing NOTHING.
@@galador8089 From my perspective it is. I'm just bothered by the extreme wasted opportunity of these films and the bizarre fact that people are acting as if something special is happening. Probably the same people who thought this was a terrible season of THE MANDALORIAN (it wasn't)... speaking of which, in a world that has STAR WARS (on TV for God's sake) how is anyone impressed by this middling effort of creativity? My mind is just boggled.
Looks amazing... you definitely need to see it in IMAX. The DUNE novel is the best selling Sci-Fi novel in history so it's not really in the same category as Blade Runner
I'm a person who thinks everything needs to be seen in a theatre (if it is intended to be seen in a theatre) no matter what the film is... DUNE was the first time EVER I sat in IMAX and thought this movie doesn't need the theatre experience AT ALL. These films are the biggest cinematic wasted opportunity I've ever seen, I don't understand people's hype. (BLADE RUNNER was actually good) '
@@JAIstarkillerkid That's true of most book adaptions. I've read books and the movie comes out and it doesn't compare at all. I know the feeling. Even Stephen King hates the adaptation of The Shining but it's considered great by most people.
@@Nay-kp6uu Most, but not all.... WATERSHIP DOWN is fabulous as a novel and movie (the original 1978 movie, not the BBC/Netflix show, which sucks.) I can point to almost every scene in DUNE and show how it is just WRONG. There should have been more emphasis placed on the Sardaukar and the significance of winning over the Fremen... the whole adaptation just misses all the dramatic points.
@@JAIstarkillerkid I'm just saying not all movie adaptations need to be completely faithful since most of the general audience hasn't read whatever source material it's based on. They're not made for the book readers, they're made for movie goers. Jurassic Park is completely different from the book but it is a classic movie. Blade Runner is a very loose adaptation as well from the literature.
@@Nay-kp6uu How faithful a film needs to (or should) be depends on what you want to achieve. I sat there thinking the whole time that nobody who hasn't read the book is going to know why this is happening or what this means... it makes me wonder how anyone who doesn't know the book was able to digest it. But the point about knowing the book and not accepting the film is this adaptation doesn't even approach achieving fulfillment of its artistic potential... in a world of modern cinema... especially one that has given us STAR WARS... I can't even comprehend why anyone is at all impressed by these films. The drama is weak. The atmosphere is weak. The scripting is watered down. The storytelling is abrupt. It's all wasted potential. I didn't even get the sense that it was grand. I saw it in IMAX and 3D and all I could think was that you would lose NOTHING by watching this on TV. The greatest strength of the prose of DUNE is its ability to evoke atmosphere and feelings, a presence of place... I got NO feelings from this film. And, it's not being different that is the problem as much as just getting the idea behind everything wrong is. The differences between the novel and film of JURASSIC PARK are minimal but also don't matter as much simply because the "essence" is still there. The movie also happens to be better than the book, which helps. JAWS takes a terrible novel and transforms it into one of the great American films. That's not happening here.
@@JAIstarkillerkid I respect your opinion bro. As someone who hasn't read the book I'm not on your level. My first experience with Dune was in 8th grade, 1999. My science teacher showed us the David Lynch version. I had no idea what was going on and couldn't comprehend anything. He skipped the part where the Baron kills the guy cause he didn't want us to see that, then flys around. since then I always had a morbid curiosity about what was so bad. I've watched the original and the recut of that I think I like it cause of nostalgia and I appreciate Lynch's effort even if it's bizarre. He also had us read Ender's Game which I couldn't get into.

First Dune was a first day release on HBO
Austin Butler!!! Enough said. . .
The music is insane, dear lord.
I didn't see first one in theaters, just couldn't get there, a regret for sure. I will make it here, I love that first book, and first part. The Spice Must Flow
Yo no pude ver la primera parte en el cine aquí en Uruguay, la vi directamente en hbo max. Aquí ni tenemos pantallas imax todavía, pero esta definitivamente la voy a ver en el cine, el trailer es espectacular.
9:20 I wonder if Jason Momoa has any clue what kind of job security he could have...
Same day HBO & movie release & one of the 1st movies out in theaters from pandemic
Dune is a masterpeice. Denis is my favorite director by far and no doubt Dune 2 will also be a masterpeice
That’s not Matt Smith.
That’s Feyd played by Austin Butler.
Part 1 was definitely on HBO max on release date, I remember i rewatched it as soon as I got home from regal
Still holding out for a ballad of songbirds and snakes trailer reaction, and maybe reactions of the rest of hunger games franchise 🥹
I can't speak for all the later books but they're pretty good even if writen but someone else. They go off of Herberts notes, so they're not just completely made up.
Perfect casting and perfect Rebecca Ferguson
"Lemme spoil this for the panel real quick"
"Lemme add some context for my friends to further enhance their appreciation for this film real quick"
Friend: "Thanks Hector! I appreciate this film more now."
i Feel the dune movies will be his Magnum Opus
My favorite thing about the new Dune movies is that they're pulling a page from the book that Lord of the Rings set up: They've decided to shoot it and end it at a good spot to stop for continuity. I'm SO excited!!
Can’t wait. I remember as SOON as the 1st movie ended I smacked a movie-goer next to me and said I want the next one NOW!
We are very much looking forward to this movie 👌🏻
I hope somehow they're able to do films through to God Emperor of Dune, as I want to see Denis' vision for Leto II's worm body.
I’m riding this Dune train until God Emperor. Bring on the worm! 🪱
i need that watch along
I've seen part 1 at least 6 times, and I read the book. I am so exited for this...
Looking like it will be my favorite film on 2023.
Would love to see the back story of Baron Harkonnen (Stellan Skarsgård). For those who did read the books, his daughter is never revealed in the original movie. I believe it's critical to establish his back story. Fand who haven't read the books would be shocked!
The musical score itself is a masterpiece! Fucking epic❤
I missed IMAX the first film. I am def catching IMAX for part 2.
adam be reactin from heaven now
I genuinely can’t wait for part two! The first was fantastic and having read some of the books I’m really excited to see more of the story realized on screen.
Until this or maybe Dune: Messiah potentially surpasses it, Blade Runner 2049 is Denis' magnum opus to me. I'm completely open to having that change, but that's where I currently stand.
LET THE SPICE FLOW 🙌🔥🍻
I’m ready for the Duniverse.
Father, the sleeper has awakened!
A storm is coming!!
Emperor we come for you!!
Engagement for the engagement god!
Would love to see the God Emperor Leto II in full worm form as depicted by Denis. Holy shit that would be awesome.
Do a watchalong of the 80s dune 😂😂
Will you be posting your house of the dragon reactions eventually on TH-cam or patrion exclusive?
Edit: just saw you posted on patreon. Cant wait for the TH-cam posts for Hotd
All we need is Dune Messiah then a tv series of Children of Dune
Tingles in my jingles
I don't understand how there are still people who say that the original is better when not even its own director likes it.
Because it isn't lazy and pedestrian... for a movie so BIG these are actually shockingly small.
@@JAIstarkillerkid This wasnt lazy either, try to make movie like that yrself
@@worlddd7777 Oh, in terms of film, it was totally lazy... for one thing the designs are boring as Hell. So is the shot framing. This is the first time I've ever sat in a theatre (IMAX and 3D even) and thought, yeah, you totally don't need to see this in the theatre, people watching at home on HBO MAX are missing NOTHING.
@@JAIstarkillerkid that is a mental take. Just because the design used brutalist architecture it isn’t immediately boring
When you get excited over a glass of water
Somehow looks even better than the first!! WOW, and no walken reveal yet :)
(BLADE RUNNER was actually good)
'
Florence Pugh is in the movie, nuff said, pre-order
I was worried I wouldn't understand the Dune cause I heard it's complicated. But I was enthralled and wasn't bored at all
@@JAIstarkillerkid That's true of most book adaptions.
I need to see this film in IMAX or Cinemark XD! 😁
Paul is not a Hero, he is a Anti-Hero bordering on Dark-Hero
The Russo Brothers had their hands on multiple MCU films. Especially phase 3
AWESOME REVIEW…made me even more excited to see this!!!!!!!
Even though I watched 1st part at home in 4k with my dad & my sister.......I really want to see 2nd part in Theater in Dolby 🙌
Hopefully there's a series since Dune is huge & I don't have time to read everything unless I was a kid or retired.
November 3rd is my birthday so I’m very excited 🤧
2nd book Duncan is cloned n back so if part 2 is a success you'll see Duncan back sooner than you think
