Okay so before you're bombarded with comments from Argentinians, here's one from an English speaker to explain this to you: Charly is a genius and considered a god not only in Argentina, but in all of Latin America. He started playing piano at 3 and was already composing his own songs. He was a professor of music by the age of 12 and around the same age composed a song which is considered one of his best ever. He began a folk duo circa 1969 called Sui Generis which was super popular until their breakup in 1975 (they had a huge farewell show, playing to 30,000 people over 2 sold out shows in one night). He was also the leader of another folk group at the time before starting a new prog rock band, La Maquina de Hacer Pajaros ("The Bird Making Machine"). He got tired of that after a year or two and then began a new group called Serú Girán - this name means nothing as it's a made up language Charly created in order to give messages to the listeners without being understood by the military dictatorship who at the time was kidnapping and killing innocent people, especially musicians and other artists. Serú Girán was the last real band Charly had before they broke up in 1982 and he went solo. He pumped out album after album in many different genres of music for many years. He had a very bad drug addiction which lasted decades and he was on the news constantly for all the outrageous and controversial shit he did. In 2000, he jumped from the 9th floor into a pool below. People thought he was dead but journalists and fans rushed into the hotel complex to find him relaxing in the pool like nothing had happened. The video you have watched is from Cosquin Rock which is an annual festival in Argentina - in fact, the largest festival in all of Latin America. Hundreds of thousands of people attend each year. He was still very much in the grips of his addiction during this show, hence his very erratic and unpredictable behaviour (at one point he said to the crowd "an offering for you" then smashed 2 whiskey glasses together in his hands). Native English speakers who are willing to listen to his music are always blown away. It's been said time and time again that if Charly were born in the US or the UK that he would be as big as the Beatles or the Rolling Stones.
Very good comment! Im just an argentinian fan who wants to recommend you guys some great songs: Seru giran - la grasa de las capitales La máquina de hacer pájaros - hipercandombe O cualquiera de Charly, particularmente recomiendo promesas sobre el bidet, fanky, yendo de la cama al living, influencia, etc! Saludos!!
@FriedIcecreamIsAReality Yep, as I said, it was a prog rock band. They did however have some folk-ish tunes like "Como Mata El Viento Norte" and "Por Probar El Vino y El Agua Salada"
@FriedIcecreamIsAReality I sure was; I just didn't name them because it would have just been one more inconvenient word in Spanish for the English readers of this comment. While I do like PorSuiGieco, they really were the least important part of Charly's career.
Also in Argentina we have the honor and pride of having the best audience in the world, which no artist expects, which is part of the show, the best choir in the world and can never be. Matched even if they try to copy....
I comment that that show began with thunder and lightning and after two hours Charly was already in one of his worst stages of addictions, he couldn't say that he didn't keep singing under a torrential rain and we were all still asking for more, but poor Charly was already out of control and crazy. They would have to listen to other songs and watch videos of his beginnings or of one of his bands, for example Sui Generis, Seru Giran, La Maquina de Make Pájaros or simply listen to the records he has made with his friend Pedro Aznar, in the Tango project and Tango4
A genius, an art obsessive. The guy gives orders to the illuminator while he is giving a show. He says "light" to enlighten the public, and so that you can see it on TH-cam 20 years later and enjoy it. A genius.
El rock argentino es muy bueno. Nombro algunos, Charly, Indio Solari, Soda Stereo, Miguel Mateos, Virus, Git, Fabiana Cantilo, Hilda Lisarazu, Los piojos, Los ratones paranoicos, Los enanitos verdes, Rata blanca, Bersuit, Fito Paez, David Lebon, Jaf , Andres Calamaro.
Hi folks...nice reaction cheers!!...I suggest you try with "funky" the official video, with beatiful views of NY. This song belongs Charly García too. Take care my friends. Hugs from Argentina

@@YagoWoods Argentine rock is bad, it seems neighborhood rock, there are few redeemable bands, but their music is slow, boring and their lyrics have nothing of a philosophical culture ... It's the truth, if it offends you, it's not my problem that they have bad music.
