This charming story of lovable, larger than life characters will please all the family. This is a delightful woodland romp with many of the best scenes featuring a roly-poly toad...
It's amazing to me that the BBC commisioned both 'Extras' - which made fun of low-brow, lowest-common-denominator, wig-wearing, innuendo/catchphrase-based comedies - and 'Mrs Brown's Boys' - which is a low-brow, lowest-common-denominator, wig-wearing, innuendo/catchphrase-based comedy, and did so without any sense of irony or loss of integrity. Stewart Lee compared the BBC's commissioning process to weather - in the sense that no normal person would think that weather was "for" you or going "against" you; it's just stuff gets commissioned and stuff doesn't - even if two examples of their content seem contradictory.
The BBC used to give the world Monty Python's Flying Circus, Fawlty Towers, Blackadder, A Bit of Fry & Laurie,The Office and Extras - nowadays it gives us lowest-common denominator crap like Mrs Brown's Boys, Miranda and Citizen Khan. In hindsight, When The Whistle Blows seems almost prophetic.
Mrs Browns Boys in a nutshell. Hilarious thing is this is the kind of shit the people in our country would absolutely lap up, if it was real. Very sad.
The Extras series that featured When the Whistle Blows came out in 2006. Mrs Browns Boys has been in existence since the early 1990s, as a massively successful radio series, then touring stage/arena show, before becoming a massively successful mainstream sitcom. It is a type of 'old fashioned' humour that is hugely popular and quite clearly timeless. The recent movie spin off brought in 3 times the box office revenue that the Alan Partridge movie did (and Partridge was a great movie too). It seems very silly to mock something that is hugely successful. Deriding its' success as something that is 'wrong with this country' is so self-righteously snobbish and pathetic. Gervais was poking fun at a genre; he's wasn't saying it was necessarily bad. Andy wanted his sitcom to be like Frazier, but it ended up like Curry & Chips, an ITV sitcom set in a factory from the 1970s (youtube search it). That was the show that Gervais was mocking.
+TrevorSteven Mrs Browns Boys is ridiculously unfunny and it is only "successful" among the demographic that When the Whistle Blows mocks. They are both low-brow, broad, repetitive, monotonous and infuriatingly annoying, occasionally relying on homosexual puns and even casual racism to get views, akin to the tastes of the average Sun newspaper reader.
I was going to question whether this was the inspiration for Mrs Browns Boys but it seems others commenting on this have beaten me to it! I love the way that When the Whistle blows is deliberately awful and yet it's still better than the aforementioned abomination of a sitcom!
I love Ricky's disdain for the low-brow, common denominator British sitcom. In one of the old XFM shows, Karl's quiz prizes (aka junk he found around the office), contained a boxset of 'Bread'. Let's just say Merchant & himself, weren't too impressed.
I was wondering how the viewing public could continue to watch those shopworn sitcoms after this, then I remembered how Gervais and Merchant went on to star in shopworn, critically denounced, middle of the road, family rom-coms.
+PomBare I thought all of the Gervais/Merchant output was critically praised? Personaly I never got the Office but I thought the second series of Extras was great.
Love the fact that the humour snobs claim this is mocking 'Mrs Browns Boys' and thank Gervais for 'educating the masses', when in actual fact it was based on 'Curry & Chips', a 1970s ITV sitcom based in a factory, which became infamous for its' racist, sexist, lewd humour (and has never been repeated on tv since). TH-cam it!
Is it just me or did he actually wanted to make something like the office. The boss was as stupid as david brent. And maybe just maybe are you having a laugh became thats what she said.
Absolute epitome of irony. I do get it. It's possible that without this spoof panto type show, Mrs Browns Boys wouldn't have been commissioned. And now that Ricky let the genie out of the bottle, it won't go back in and has overtaken subtle, ironic and clever sitcoms, which is pretty clever in itself. I love all the Gervais output. He's a one-trick pony, but I do love the trick. And for all elitist arseholes out there, it is entirely possible to get every single joke, look and nuance in Extras and then five minutes later be laughing one's bollocks off at MBBs. And as for thoughts of plagiarism, that can only be levelled at one party as MBBs was going in its current format in theatres long before even The Office was mooted. So there, get it up ye!

That's quite a good description, actually.

@Andrew Whyte Paul Shane thinks this is too broad?
Except this is actually funny. Mrs Brown's Boys is 💩

Spot on tee
I wish he had made a complete episode of this.
and ITV 2 has just commissioned 15 series of When the Whistle Blows starring Keith Lemon
I thought it was called when the wind blows!
Dave Foster I thought it was The Wind and the Willow
I thought it was gone with the wind.
i thought gone girl.
Whistle
@magget16 "He has the same throat" XD
Mrs Brown’s Boys. The epitome of sub-Carry On sitcom comedy.
And even worse, Big Top and The Wright Way. British humor has seen better days, that's for sure.
I would watch this if it were real.

Same!
How amazing that he developed a full-on theme for the show within a show. Talk about attention to detail.

When the whistle blows is what Ricky didn’t want the office to be.
Best thing to happen to British comedy for ages.
Thank you Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant for your Comedy Brilliance.:)))))
Whoever did this animation also did the drawings in Karl Pilkington's books. The style is the same...even though they claimed Karl drew them.
there are videos of Karl drawing... why would they lie about that? I believe you can find it in their video podcasts
@@cailyngp333 You don't actually see him construct a drawing. He's just holding a pen pretending to draw.
You are correct; this intro and a lot of work linked with both Karl and Ricky are illustrated/animated by a very talented Laurie Peters.
This is basically what Mrs Browns Boys is. What a show Extras was, predicted the future and is a 'Credible comedy that will stand the test of time'
"our whole universe was in a hot dense state..."
It's becoming quite a catchphrase itself...
Best Comedy of a generation
I hear elements of the Only Fools and Horses closing theme. The drum fill at the beginning and the repeating of the last words at the end.
Are u 'avin a laff?

He was equally unimpressed when Karl pilkington chose Peter kay as a fantasy dinner guest!
Buy it sell it the game's getting hard...cause someone's you a losing card!

Hey, "Bread" wasn't all that bad! It wasn't peak TV, but what 80's show was?
Oh yes, much better to rip off American classics like curb your enthusiasm and Larry Sanders show, Gervais doesn't have an original bone in his body
You are repeating the catchphrase of an episode that made fun of catchphrases. My mind is blown.

Haha, I can definitely hear it now you’ve said that... well anyway, must crack on.
Genius.
This show may have been intentionally bad, but this is honestly a decent intro.
"Are you having a laugh!!!!???" This would have been a boss sitcom had it actually been made for the BBC!!!!
Maybe one episode, but after that it wouldn't be funny!
Yeah that would make sense but I still think it's hilarious how 6 million people watched this show in 'Extras' XD
I think as a standalone show it would be shit
