I'm glad the dad got the bike back because I don't think law enforcement take a stolen bike a serious enough crime to even pursue. And if you wait for all the logistics of what it would take for the police to confront the perps, that bike would be gone. We need a modern day Charles Bronson

So if you report a stolen article with verifiable evidence of a crime and the location of the stolen goods, their hands are tied, but if you report a suspicious person walking at night with no verifiable crime, they can show up and slam people head first into the ground based solely on a report.
    Makes perfect sense.
"We must respect 4th amendment rights". What then is a reasonable, articulable suspicion? I mean, property was stolen with clear evidence available of its location. Sounds EXACTLY like a reasonable, articulable suspicion.

Cops in California won’t do anything. My friend had his tool bags stolen from work a few months back and he had airtags hidden in his bags. I drove with him to the address that the tags were pinging at and we called the cops immediately. When they showed up they said that basically all they could do was ask if they took it 🙄😒. Even with proof of the AirTags current location and hearing them ring, the cops refused to do anything except knock and ask. Naturally we took matters into our own hand and hopped the gate and grabbed the tools in the garage…

In other words, the cops would have done nothing until it was too late. This dad did exactly what all caring dads would do and the use of the word "vigilante" is hilarious coming from a law enforcement officer who couldn't do the simple thing and immediately go to the second location. If there is an air tag that lets them know exactly where it is they don't need anything - they go there, recover the stolen property and arrest those responsible for stealing it. It's time they stop giving ALL the rights to the criminals and none to the victims. Go dad and shame on you, police. And why wasn't the person arrested? Answer that, why don't you?

@haineshisway, the police do not have time/resources to track down stolen property (unless it is over a certain value or their were other more serious crimes involved in the theft). It's always been this way. Some cities have special units that will search for stolen items on Craigslist, etc. but that is in cases where there is a huge spike in thefts (like Catalytic Converters) . In Detroit the police will not even come to your house to take report if there is a home break in/theft (you need to file a report at the police station, and good luck having them even investigate).

My unit at Public Storage in Redlands, CA. got ransacked and were never informed about the theft until a few weeks later. Redlands PD investigated but never went further. My son and I tracked the thieves on Craigslist. We prentended that we were buyers to make sure that it was indeed our property. After it confirmed that some of the items for sale were in fact ours, we first contacted San Bernardino Sheriff's Department since it was happening in the city of San Bernardino but they said they could not do anything because RPD was investigating the matter and that we should contact them instead. RPD took their sweet time to arrest the thieves and by then most of our stuff were already sold off.

    Local law enforcement is USELESS!!

That's pretty ridiculous they say they need to get a warrant. The GPD locator ping should give them probable cause.

My Wife tracked down her brand new iPhone right to the persons house they denied the phone was there and then tried to give us the phone back once they knew the police were on the way. But 3k 🤑 for that EBike they needed to get that bike back.

Yea the police follow a slow system that allow criminals to clean up their mess, the dad did what he had.

I've had four or five bicycles stolen over the years. Its a racket and the cops know that.
Now I live up the country without a car and the bike is the only to get to town.
Good on Dad to get it back, but I would have brought others with me. Not show up alone.
And I would keep the Ebike inside. It is valuable property, keep it somewhere you know its safe.

Get insurance for the ebike. It’s like 17-22 bucks a month. Kryptonite locks insure locked items as well.

By the time the police did anything the AirTag would be dead and/or probably found and removed, lost property.

Bureaucracy destroyed the justice system. The police admitted in their statement that they would have done nothing until they received permission to search the home of the thief; by which time he may have sold or hidden the bike... and considering how busy they are they wouldn't have taken any step at all.

Good thing when you find your stolen merchandise the Law changes and now you're allowed to defend your property even better if the person can be defined as reaching for something when you confront them about protecting your property. There's no reason to assume that a thief is not also armed
