it wasn’t an E bike, but I purchased my first expensive bicycle while living on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. as an afterthought, I asked him about bike locks. He looked me straight in the face and said I can sell you a $250 bike lock, but it won’t work any better than a cheap lock if someone really wants this bike. My advice to you is simply don’t leave it alone, if you’re out riding and want to stop for coffee, lock it, but don’t let it out of your sight.” I never forgot that advice. So this is a different situation, there are several good takeaways I got from this from securing my new E bike around my house. Thieves look for opportunities like most people look for jobs. by covering your bike, and attaching a motion alarm, you’re taking two steps to reduce the information they have to judge the opportunity. Thanks for the video and the insight!
That really is the best advice, I never let my bike out of sight when bike touring. The expensive bike-specific locks are pretty useless, look at locksmithing channels to see what's good. For bikes, you just want pewag snow chain and a very hard to rake, pick, or break shutter lock. Sleeve the chain in a tough fabric that'll snag grinding wheels.
@@boxlid214 - Hiplok D1000 is almost grinder proof. You will need a vice and electric (not battery) grinder and many blades if you want to defeat the D1000 in less than 20 minutes. That said, D1000 shackle is small.
@Homie I hear you! I don’t appreciate becoming a victim. But I don’t want to go to jail myself either! You can’t legally set a “Mantrap” even in your own home.
With any expensive toy like an ebike, for instance, you always need to pretend you are in the worst neighborhood in NYC and use that level of protection. Remove all accessories, remove the seat if you have a nice seat, always remove the battery and lock it in your rig or take it with you in a backpack. Don't use just 1 ulock, use 2 + a thick motorcycle chain, anchored to something no power grinder can possibly get through. Yes, take your ebike inside whenever you can--I'd consider getting a ramp that you can put on your rig's front stairs to wheel that bike up & get it inside for safe storage. Getting a bike stolen 4 times, is the universe's way of smacking you upside the head, and they keep doing it, until a lesson is truly learned.
Thanks Liz! These are great tips on keeping our e-bikes as safe as possible. I have the cover I have 3 locking items 2 kryptonite chain locks and a kryptonite u-lock. I put a chain through the front wheel to my front 5th wheel Jack and the same with back wheel then I put the u-lock through back wheel and around one of the bike bars. Then I cover it. I have an alarm on my bike as well. I hide an air tag on my bike too. My husband thinks it’s over kill. I don’t. These bike are way to expensive to have it stolen. I worked to hard to just let someone else take my bike.
I dunno. Maybe overkill in some situations, but if you live in NYC, it's probably underkill. Lol. One thing I will say is if I were a thief, I would move on. I have a Kryptonite Chain lock too, and I lost the key. Dang, what a mess. I was trying to get a vice to hold the chain so I could grind through it. Luckily I ended up finding the key. I could see how it would be very hard to position the grinder to cut through it.
@@DavidSmith-sj9si - I think for 80% of the US, Cathy is fine. What I like is the multi layers of protection. If I am thief and I see 3 locks and 2 are kyptonites, I am looking for another target.
Liz you are the best! My wife and I have been following your channel for quite a while now. We also bought Juiced ebikes based on your reviews. I hate thieves. For our Juiced RipCurrents we bought 9 and 4 foot sections of LaClede 3/8" hardened chain and padlocks to match, keyed alike. (chain is about $10-12 per foot) The chains are sleeved in a nylon sheath. Run the chain through our RV wheel and through the frames of both bikes. We use the 4' section as an extender or sometimes lock our generator up in the truck bed or even to the RV frame. We make sure to cover the bikes when not in use. The chains will hold up to all but the 5-6 foot bolt cutters and will probably just slow down a thief with an angle grinder/cutoff wheel and diamond bits. I like the motion sensor alarm - may have to add that to the countermeasures as well.
Yay, so glad you have the RipCurrents. Would love to see you on the bike trail someday. And thanks for sharing what you do to keep yours safe. That's awesome you've been watching the channel for so long. Sure appreciate you being here through thick and thin!
Your so right Liz camp grounds are a magnet for theft, a lot of weirdos flow in and out of our camp grounds, I do tell everyone to be very cautious about your surroundings at all time, Liz your an amazing Lady, I wish you nothing but happy sailing in your RV, stay safe out Beautiful!
Thank you so very much for your kind words, Bill. You are really helping me out by commenting within the first hour. It helps grow the video. Thanks for watching and have a fabulous weekend!
Its not usually weirdos flowing in an out, it is local people who know that expensive bikes etc. will be available on a rotating basis, so they have an endless supply available at the campgrounds. They know the people they steal from will be moving on and are not their neighbors who may turn them in.
@@Tatiacha Yep, any place you go as a transient, you learn the lesson quick, that you can't go Sherlock Holmes and solve the theft. You need to leave. Mine was summer camp. Kid stole my cash, and rode off with his parents into the sunset, performing the heist on going home day. I still got tons of bikes stolen over the years. One was from inside the house, so I am not going to do self harm over that one. Another was at a college animal house, and I had to get on and off that bike like 30 times a day, so I took a break from the locking up while home for lunch. Of course, I think a roommate took it home to his parents house since that gave him plenty of cover to get it fenced. He later revealed his enemy status about something else and got a broken face from me for that. It's so funny how bikes work. You can wear a $20,000 watch and nobody will try to take it. You can have the hottest lover in town, and until she leaves, she's yours, but a bike; it turns into an international conspiracy to separate you from that.
My dearest camping friends had both of their E bikes, stolen off of their car trailer, which was fully alarmed, and the bikes were chained to the welded steel rack that he had customized for the bike carrier. All of the security meant nothing to these thieves. They took it all, including the audible alarm system. And the bike covers, which were there to conceal and protect bikes. I I think the most important thing that you can add to the security system is the portable tracking device, which you can sit down with the sheriff and hunt them down. There was a company on the Internet who was selling three of these devices for $55 but their target market was jealous husbands and wives.! Small enough to slip into a purse or a coat pocket easily. Just think locate one of these underneath the seat on your E bike and you can follow it. Thomyt
You can also set up a raspberry pi to text your phone if the bikes are disturbed. Simple setup with a chinese laptop battery, vibration sensor, and usb SMS module. The code is out there so it doesn't take much programming knowledge. I did that while my friends and I had our bikes all locked up in a hotel room outside NYC. I don't take chances with my bike, even in hotel rooms, it's a stainless vaya travel frame and irreplaceable. You can add camera modules and motion sensors too, then it can text you the pictures it takes as home security cameras do.
I told you why you lost your eBike and how to protect it on your first theft (with Paul). Yes I know, I am just some random person on the internet (and I would have done the same as you, and ignored me, lol), but damn, four eBikes? I have had my eBike for 8 years now, no thefts. MY RULES: KEEP IT INSIDE THE VEHICLE (you said you could not so Then INCLOSE it with some kind of cover!!!) Get several locks, a chain one and a U lock AND ANOTHER!!! Yes, three locks. Never leave the bike out of your sight if outside, NEVER!!! (yes, hard to do) NEVER leave the battery in the bike! (easy to do) Engrave the bike with info, lots of info! Get an alarm, simple cheap and easy. Get a personal camera to watch your RV at all times. Use a tracker (not that good, but what the hell). I did not know the insurance info you provided. Bummer. Good video!
Just ordered another AirTag for my rv ebike. It’s specifically on the back of my rv for camping and parked at an rv storage lot when not in use. The lot has been broken into before. I also remove the battery when it’s on the hitch rack. Makes it 20lbs lighter too. I also have AirTags on my motorcycle, home ebike and in my rv. Good info. Thanks. 😊
If you have quick release on your seat post you're a fool. Lose the lever and get a hex bolt & lock nut; my post alone costs $150 not including the seat. I've had 2 seats & posts stolen due to the ease to do so, just FYI...
One tip to add to your other tips is do not leave your lock accessible to thieves. Take it with you or keep it inside where thieves can't get to it when you aren't there. My wife had a bike stolen with a key they made for the lock she left at the bike rack. Thieves can get or have a key made for your lock by reading the numbers on the lock. (they are there to help you replace a key if you lose it)
Sand that number off after you record it. You are correct, most people don’t know about that number. One time I found a large expensive master lock opened in the street. It was almost in front of a locksmith shop. I walked in then out with the key. Because the numbers where not sanded off.
hardly brazen, all they would have to do is snap a pic and come back like they own it. if thats the case as these lock mechanisms can usually be picked/defeated pretty easily. brazen is the scumbag who takes a grinder to it outside a mall.
@@TheFreshPeddler Good point. I hadn't thought about using your phone to make a key. Crime is spreading across the country these days and all you can do is make it harder for them sadly.
Lots of great information Liz! We actually took our table and chairs out of our fifth wheel and with the use of a portable 7’ aluminum ramp we just roll our two bikes up into our rig and call it good. I’ve even devised a way to secure the bikes in the rig for travel! Put on well over 10,000 miles with the fifth wheel last year with no problems at all with the bikes moving or falling. Works great! Very seldom do we ever miss the table being in there anymore. Keep up the great videos and stay safe out there.
That is our plan too this summer. Only we are going to remove the couch. Our dining table has already been converted to a work area. Still have two recliners for relaxing. It isn't like we entertain inside very much.
Great tips Liz! I will add covers as thieves can find it harder to figure out if it is worth dealing with a cover. As funny as it may sound, in addition, I have duct tape covering the name-brand of my e-bikes. Black duct tape for my black bike and white for the white bike. I don't care about advertising the brand or getting added attention. Those Motorbike/Bicycle Anti-Theft Alarms are great but can be annoying if the alarm goes off at a bike rack when many other riders are using the rack. The alarm scared the living lights out of this guy. He was not happy :) I also use the ABUS Bordon 6000 bracket locks that come with an alarm. Which you can activate depending on where you park your bike. The locks can be expensive. With these two alarms, I feel a little more comfortable due to the fact that the thief will have to deal with two alarms going off- and now by adding the covers it should make it even harder to steal the bikes. First, if they try to remove the cover, both the bracket lock and the Bicycle Anti-theft alarms with give him a warning and if they proceed, both alarms will go off. They are both pretty loud.
Liz, this advice is priceless. I’m sorry we are learning at your expense but…. I purchased my first e-bike last month. I could not believe how anxious I was about safeguarding my bike. I was afraid to get a coffee other than a drive-thru on my way home. I love all your advice and what was new for me was the suggestion to cover your bike. In British Columbia our rear license plate must always be visible. I cover my bike while it is in the back of my pick-up and I cover my bike when it is locked at the campsite. It is always triple locked plus, I have an alarm on my bike. I have also registered with Garage 529. All great advice. Thanks YOU!
My 40 year old motor bike lock looks like that one. I used it to lock my expensive touring bike. Like you say, nothing is 100%. I could likely cut that thing in less than 2 minutes with a special reciprocating saw blade. It would be great if RVs came out with bike ports and the bike handle bars folded to make a slim fit. A little fold down ramp on one corner of the rig. Get fancy and make it an electric ramp. Simple rubber treaded belt over chain driven.
Wanted to thank you again Liz for this video. My son just bought his first E bike and I’m sending this to him to take this whole topic very seriously. Can’t thank you enough.
Great advice! I insured our e-bikes with our insurance company (Safeco) using a motorcycle policy. About $400 for two bikes per year. Another great video, Liz!
@@dandydon6049 but the cost to replace two stolen bikes can be close to $2000. However, one could spend on the best theft prevention devices and put money aside in case that doesn't work. And remember, they said they used a motorcycle policy to cover their e-bikes, so maybe that affects the cost?
It is a sad world when you have to worry about thieves. I had one stolen with GPS tracker, so I called the PD of the city it was located with the address of the bike location. They told me they cannot investigate based on GPS. It is city of Norwalk, CA. My family kept me from going Rambo on that house. PD found it abandoned after 10 days. I guess they found the locator and got spooked.
Great video Liz! I remember each one of your eBike thefts. After what happened to you, we have an ABUS U-Lock, a Kryptonite Chain Lock, AirTag and a dinky alarm. We always remove the battery and keep them covered. But we will definitely be upgrading our alarm! Thank you so much for all these theft prevention tips that have probably saved our eBikes as we always stay in campgrounds ❤
Just purchased a Ebike went with cycrown cycknight. Prior bike was a Kent Stowaway 7000. It was my favorite bike fun to ride easy to fold and go. This EBike it a beast not as easy to fold and go, but boy is it fun. Opens up to reliving my youth trail riding motorcycles. For me, the 20 MPH is enough. But who knows I could change mind on this as I become more experienced. I checked with my insurance company and with the exception of my deductible, theft would be covered.
Great review. Love the GPS tracker tip. To go 1 more step in security - get a 2nd lock and lock the wheel so they can't ride off or even roll the bike away, just thread the lock around the tire rim, plus it's an additional lock they'll have to cut.
@@dandydon6049 anything can be cut and if a thief is determined to get your bike they will get it. The whole point is to make your bike less desirable of a target and "not worth the effort". If a thief has a choice of cutting through a lock with bolt cutters or spending lots of time going through multiple blades on a grinder - they'll choose the easy path.
As far as chain, don't buy typical chain bike locks. You want Pewag snow chain. It's so hard on the outside that it makes bolt cutter blades explode, shooting out flaming chunks of metal. The inside of the chain is not as hard, so it doesn't shatter when cryo attacked (it's the chain used on tires in winter for heavy industrial equipment after all). Angle grinders take a very long time to cut the chain, and if you cover it with a rugged sleeve that snags the wheel, it'll take them forever. To lock the chain, use a high quality shutter lock. You can also install GPS tracking devices. I programmed a raspberry pi board with a vibration SMS alarm and had it running in some places, that way it messaged me when the bike was disturbed.
@@LizAmazing much better, the surface is harder than boron treated steel, but the chain won't shatter easily when frozen and hit with a good hammer. Wayne Wynn has a video cutting it, the blades on a 4ft bolt cutter shattered flaming shards of metal off when he was putting all his weight and strength on the ends. People don't really know it exists because it's usually only available through dealers that sell pewag brand chain to industrial/commercial equipment operators. I got some sections sent to me from a dealer in Alaska lol
What gives?!!! Why do you keep getting targeted for ebike theft? Thank you for having the courage to share this painful experience with us all, and providing information that will hopefully help others to avoid suffering the same sort of losses that you have.
Out of sight….out of mind. Remove the battery and put it in the back your truck or rig via a pet ramp, lay it down covered and set your alarms. We have 2 dogs and they let know if something odd is going outside.
She keeps getting targeted because, whether she realizes it or not, she's flashing her cash with very nice, obviously expensive things, and that makes her a target. The key is extreme modesty, combined with uglification.
Great and informative video. I have had a Juiced CCX for four years and I never leave it alone for a second when I am on a ride. I even take it in the park bathrooms with me. When at home I lock it up in the garage. I like that motion detector. That looks like that would work well in your situation when you are sleeping while camping. I would be devastated if someone stole my bike, that is why I do everything I can to protect them.
I don’t have an E bike but I do use that cable lock for my generator. It’s gone I’m gonna get a good chain. Thanks Liz another great video and wow 80,000!
I have that same horn/alarm and it's a great horn, cars hear you and think your a motorcycle. I also cover as much as possible too. I like the U-Lock you showed. Never leave my eBike outside overnight at a hotel, I go through the extra effort and bring it in. CAB Motorworks Eagle is my main bike, more motorcycle than bike. Thanks for the video
my go to is 1 chain lock 1 folding lock and a u lock and sometimes a cheap cable lock just for the front wheel. on my ebike built a lil box to store them all in just so there there
but its not, because they will just cut whatever you lock it to and sometimes the bike itself and just hawk the parts they can ...just look at bike parking you will often see many locks still attached to them lol.. but anymore people will just come after you no matter where you are, because we as a people prefer to just watch or video those around us getting screwed not doing much of a damn thing about it.. and even if they get caught in many areas its just catch and release. be prepared to defend yourself and those around you. people just dont care about people anymore
I might have missed if she said, but one thing most ebike owners don't know is you can get full ebike insurance from legit insurance companies. Mine is 65 a year. If it's stolen(whether I'm home or in a foreign country)I get what I paid originally for my bike and I can go get a comparable ebike rental till I get a replacement. If I say travel and the airlines or bus or moving company breaks my bike it's covered fully, crash or accident damage covered, even if I say have spare parts like tires in my garage and they're stolen they are covered or gear like helmet or pads etc it's covered, Liability if I'm liable for someone's injury or their property is damaged, medical bills paid up to(iirc 50k)if I'm injured while biking, and the one thing I found amazing that is covered is even if I'm racing or at some bike event I'm fully covered still. SOOOO worth the money. For eg I don't use Progressive but I know they do have it(my friend does for 70ish dollars a year). So if you already use them for your vehicle you might be able to get a bundle? IDK. Just a tip I learned a while back I wish I knew before I got hit twice by people on their telephones...
Your bike lock is only as good as whatever you have your bike attached to. If your bike is attached to a simple mounted bike rack then it would be easy to take the bike with the bike rack. You just can never be too careful!! People can be such jerks. And the world wonders why I have trust issues. It is sad that life is like that now.
You are correct sir! My friend came out of his apartment only to find half the bike rack gone. The half with two ebikes. Most thieves don't want to spring for a new battery (Juice > $500) so removing is your 1st lock In campgrounds, I lay down, cover and lock to my rear axel! Hope they never cut that!
USAA renter’s insurance DOES NOT cover e-bike theft! We had ours stolen from our locked storage room at our apartment. The USAA representative said it wasn’t covered and SHOWED my husband where it said that in the policy. Maybe they have an extra charge for it that you can add to your policy, but you have to already have that in place before your e-bike is stolen.
Wow. So glad I said in the video to check with your agent. Ours did indeed cover the first bike theft. I guess it depends on the policy. Thanks for your comment!
Hi Liz, thanks for making this comprehensive video... A few month ago I had saw your video where you were a victim of bike theft at a hotel. You were most fortunate to recover your bike. I'm glad that you had learned a great deal since then about the threats and the protection measures regarding bike thefts. I hope that others will take your advise and be more vigilant. You're correct, no lock is 100% secured against bike thefts, however bike locks like the Litelok X1/X3 and the Hiplok D1000 will act as great deterrents and most likely motivate the thief to look elsewhere. These bike lock are heavy and expensive, but they are highly effective. If you have an expensive e-bike get one of these locks or risk losing your bike. One thing that I want to add, when leaving your bike locked while you're away. Bring a small back pack, take off accessories such as GPS devices, controllers, head/tail lights and as Liz said bring your battery with you. If you don't pack it away, someone else will.
Hey girl, Gary from Kansas here. I'm actually looking to purchase an ebike. This is an awesome video! You are a great youtuber and I always appreciate your videos!! Stay safe, girl!!
There's a vid on YT that shows how to remove the tiny speaker inside an Air Tag. This is inside them to prevent stalkers from slipping one in your purse or attaching it to your vehicle. When it senses motion it makes a warbling noise to alert someone it's there, so if you have one on your bike and it's stolen, the thief is likely to hear it and remove it.
Excellent review ! Excellent information! Excellent info for New owners! Excellent product information! This is a 5 ***** review !! ❤ For the record I do use Tag as well remove my battery !
Great video. We have been camping for 37 years. Campgrounds we’re much safer then than now. Nobody messed with your property back then. This world has gone to sh## over the years for sure😡😡
The question is what you attach that Litelok to. Bc if it's to that bike rack then it can easily be unscrewed. Unfortunately these u-locks/d-locks don't offer much flexibility. So as good as the Litelok is, you may not be able to attach it to a solid object at times and make it fit.
Just got home from a few days at Diamond Caverns RV park. I counted 5 e-bikes on a short walk of one loop in the campground. There is a gentleman who keeps track of the campers coming in, but I didn't see him unless someone was checking in. Anyone can just drive into the campground. Your suggestions are spot on!
You are right - nothing is fool proof. Anything we do is to make it a little harder so maybe they will move on. I looked at the chain lock but that is extra weight. Since I am 250lb I had to consider how much things weigh plus the cost. I got the best I could afford plus I got ebike insurance. I was fortunate the first time my fulltimers personal property covered it since it was stolen from the RV - not while out riding it.
That's awesome that you're insurance covered it, Charlotte! When my ebike was locked to the front leg of the fifth wheel, my fulltimers homeowners insurance did NOT cover it, but maybe it would have if I had it under personal property. See you in my brand new video right here, and thanks for watching: th-cam.com/video/CiPtWwnHAHk/w-d-xo.html
There are alternatives to the large e bikes. I realize many will say that is not the theme of this video. I understand but hear me out. E scooter might be a good alternative for some folks. There are disadvantages compared to a full size bike but they can easily be stored inside an an RV or truck. Segways are also available (may be too pricey ) and could also be stored inside. Just for thought.
Such excellent advice! I would not know about the motion alarm or the electronic finder if you didn’t talk about it. Thanks for the education! Best wishes Liz! 🍀🙋🏻♀️
Thank you, Liz! Clear & well-presented…straight to the point and no filler! I’ll share this with Facebook bike groups that I think should know about this, if they’re not already aware. Here’s to a theft-free future! 🙏
You're awesome Liz. Such great information. Sad that thieves are pretty much everywhere. Would like to hear the story on how you got your bike back (after it was stolen)? I assume the Air Tag lead you to it but hopefully, the theif got his come uppins.
Yes! I did a follow up video here, and thanks for watching: Thieves took four ebikes from my campground and hotel | theft prevention tips th-cam.com/video/yh18F3x5ktY/w-d-xo.html
AirTags now make noise when they leave your vicinity(people were throwing them in other people’s bags & following the person home without them knowing). I like that horn/alarm. I could use that. Yes the first thing i bought when i got my ebike was a bike cover. For work i take off batt, have a Kryptonite chain for front tire, NY U lock. Weak Cable lock for the seat. Yr later i added a abus frame lock/chain for quick stops. I have my eyes on a Knog scout for the final piece of mind.
I mentioned on your video when you got your bike stolen at the hotel; lock it, cover it and back it up to a tree, bush or wall if you can to make it more difficult to get to. Thanks for another great video.
Thanks for another great video with more great tips Liz. Just a shame to have to even consider and worry about these types of things. Jobs are plentiful everywhere at this time but gee, that would be too much like honest work.
There may be plentiful jobs but darn few pay a living wage. The people who aren’t stealing E-bikes are out there working 2 or 3 jobs just to get by. That’s the real shame.
@@christinec.6685 There are always consequences for crime! They just don't come home to roost immediately. It's called karma! Later when something bad happens to the thief, he/she wonders, "Why is this happening to me?!" This has to be taught to everyone at an early age so it sinks in!
I have ridden my etrike in Portland for 6 years, I ride every day rain or shine..Greater Portland Oregon has on average 4 bikes stolen each day.. The way i keep my $9k etrike safe: I have a really loud alarm with motion sensor that i use every time i'm away of my trike.. I use a Kryptonite high end lock every time. And i never leave it for more that 20 mins at a time.I absolutely never leave it locked up outside at night.I also have a Ulock on every wheel. and I always bring it into my apartment to store it. When you are camping, you absolutely need to bring a long chain and lock your bike to a tree or something stable. Turn on your alarm so you hear from your tent if someone is messing with it. And never leave anything like GPS or light on the bike when you are sleeping. And Cover it. If a thief cannot see the bike under a cover, they are more than likely not going to bother..
I'd rather take advice from someone who's had an e-bike for 4 years, and never had it stolen. Honestly, there's a difference between learning and knowing. Although I have to admit, your plan is better than mine. Which was to catch, cook, and eat them.
Thanks for taking the time to share the things you’ve unfortunately had to learn the hard way. Also Progressive insurance sucks, I would never insure through them - they take every loophole to not pay.
Liz, the one thing that makes me not want to get one of these angle grinder resistant locks are if the person trying to steal the E-bike uses a drill to drill out where your key enters the lock gets damaged, and then your key becomes useless. In that case you will need to find away to get the lock off. You will need to have access to an angle grinder to cut the lock off so you will have access to your E-bike. I use multiple locks that takes a person time to cut, and i have a way to cut off if needed. Like your video's Liz
Nobody uses drills anymore. Angle grinder is the tool of choice. Plus, just lock an alarm lock around the bar, so if the thief moves the lock, the alarm goes off. Any good thief that knows what they're doing won't even mess with a grind resistant lock. Or, they will cut the frame of the bike. There are much easier targets. Spending 20 minutes making noise and grinding isn't worth it for most thieves.
I like the folding e bikes so they can be put inside your vehicle or home fairly easy. As of this date, my only bike is a 1985 Cannondale, yep, certified antique. I've always been very protective of my bicycles. Great video Liz, thank you for sharing.
I have not found a folding ebike that is comfortable for a 30 mile ride and is easy to lift. I've tested a few. May work for some though! Thanks for your comment.
Hi Liz. Thanks for another terrific video. Your tips on preventing e-bike thefts are excellent! I agree with all your suggestions and have implemented most of them except the air tags because I have an android phone. It would be great if one of your subscribers could recommend a good GPS tracker for android. I especially like your recommendation for an angle grinder resistant lock. I didn't know that there was one. Also, I was curious how your bike cover performs when you are on the road traveling? Does it keep your bike relatively clean and do you have to add extra straps to keep it from flapping around a lot? Like you, I have an expensive e-bike so I have a seperate insurance policy just for my e-bike. It helps me sleep better at night.
Hi Rob. I don't have personal experience with an Android tracker, but I know they are out there. The bike cover works great but, wow, does it ever cut into my fuel milage! No problems, otherwise. Happy riding to you!
I would NOT live or go to a place where I can't be armed. This is b.s. that people have to always come up with better mouse traps! The threat of being put into "room temperature challenge" should be enough for thieves to not even go down that road. Instead of buying expensive locks, rig it up to some 120 volt system. I am sick and tired of hearing about thieves taking what isn't theirs and not having to pay a price.
My EBike has a quick removable front tire. Removing the front tire and battery will help make it a lesser target. They might get bike parts off it and the $20 worth of scrap metal. But also you can remove the seats easily. So no tire, battery and seat they may just pass.
Air tags are cheap and cheerful….but there are a lot of trackers on the market…usually with expensive subscriptions which i think are rip off..you buy the expensive ,tracker then they let you into the secret of the subscription cost..buyer beware..i like air tag though…
I know it’s not a popular thing, but just making people aware of other options in case somebody is interested. Electric Unicycles (EUC) are lots of fun and can easily be kept inside anything. I’m not in the RV set at this point, but I am just a middle aged, non-extreme sports dad, and once you go through the learning process it’s not more radical than anything else (I have ridden thousands of miles with no accidents, I have never had anything besides stepping off it at 5 mph while learning). I have two at this point, a 30 pound commuter that’s basically like an extra capable class 2 ebike (22 mph top speed, but great hill climbing) and a more extreme one that’ll go 40, though I rarely exceed 30. I ride the 22 mph one in a suit to work on days I take the train. If people are having a tough time with thefts, smaller electric stuff like a scooter or EUC that they can put inside a car or easily bring inside a hotel is something to consider.
I'd watch what you lock your bike to with any locks. It might be a fantastic lock but a bike rack might be easier to cut though to steal your bike with lock attached. I have Progressive insurance and they will argue any point when you have damage and give you just half of what it costs to get your vehicle fixed. Lousy insurance! -Jon
Yes, also have your bike rack locked somehow to your vehicle so they can't just take it. I have a second hardened steel chain lock around my hitch on my truck. Thanks for watching.
The removal of the battery is the absolute best advice. Most bike thieves wants to steal a bike to sell it. It is practically worth nothing to them without a battery and although it may not be worth for them to go and buy a new battery, should they, many bike dealers wants to see your receipt of actually buying sush a bike before they sell you a battery.
Hey Liz, Great tips for securing an ebike! I am sad that you had to go through 4 thefts to pass this info. Safe travels and TC is hunkering down for another bad storm. (again) Hope to see you someday in Bama. Peace out!

Just under 20,000 to go! Wow Liz, you are almost there! We all need to share your excellent full of information videos and you will get to your first objective! The next 100k will be a brise :) I wish we did not have to always think of people wishing to steal part of what makes us happier or comfortable… but, it’s not reality! Well done as always and on the point. Thank you!
I use (2) Krypronite locks, (1) hidden movement alarm, and (1) hidden Tracki GPS on my ebike. If someone even slightly moves the ebike the alarm goes off and the gps tracker alerts my phone immediately. No issues here ! I also cover the ebike everytime I'm away for more then 1/2 hour.
I build low weight folding bikes that can easily be stored inside your camper. They're faster, more powerful and can climb hills better or just as good as $10k pro ebikes. My last build was quite heavier than most at 40lbs total , but could easily fold up and fit inside your car trunk , rv, or camper. No need to use a bike rack at all.
That's cool, Keith. I live in 230 sf fulltime, so no room for a bike inside. But good to know as I'm sure your comment is bound to help others. Thanks for watching.
E bike thefts are indeed a very big problem. So sorry to read about your troubles. Down here where we are in Texas, we had a rash of pick up trucks being stolen. 3 1 tons and 1 3/4 ton were taken within 2 weeks. My truck alarm on my 2021,1 ton dually went off about 4 am and i was up and outside my rig within 10 seconds. They were trying to steal a 5 gallon can of gasoline and not my truck. A simple charging of the 12 ga. "trench gun" scattered them right quick. The theft ring was later broken up and everyone's truck plus someone's Mustang GT were recovered with various damages. These vehicles were to be taken over the border into Mexico. The racking of a weapon is a wonderful international language.
Ever since I watch this video, I’ve never thought about having my bike stolen so much I bought two kryptonite locks, and then I bought that fancy New York bike lock with the heavy duty chain. It’s not something you want to take with you I just would like to be able to use it and feel confident if I go into a little town near a RV park, have a coffee buy some groceries be able to be confident my bike will be there when I come back I would never leave it for an extended period thanks again for your help
Yeah, that lock is super heavy, Mark. That Ulock is so light that I take it with me. I've used it at the grocery and outside a visitor's center. I also use the horn alarm so that if someone messes with it, I'll hear it. Enjoy that new ride!
Some thieves will cut the frame of the bike to get the lock off. The angle grinder will go through the aluminum frame like butter. Then they lift the bike into a waiting van and off. Even though the bike has been damaged there are plenty of valuable parts that can be salvaged. You want to attach the frame, rear wheel and the object together with one lock. I'm not sure if that U lock is big enough for that.
Yes. I have the rack locked to the frame with a hardened steel chain lock. I should have mentioned that. Of course, nothing is 100% theft proof but you just hope you can slow them down or inconvenience them enough for them to move on to an easier target. Thanks for watching, John.
I've had my Juiced Ripcurrent S since 2018. I actually have the 5th one ever made. I have Velosurance Bicycle Insurance because they have an optional AAA service for bicycles that comes and gets you in case of a bike problem. Their ebike specific insurance covers EVERYTHING, and I do mean everything from bike helmet to hospital stay. It's pretty reasonably priced for what you get.
I’m So sorry for you & the others! Sounds like there are more low life’s cruising the camp grounds than in most residential neighborhoods! If I owned a CG there would be tight controlled access and anyone caught being naughty would be physically punished !
Thanks so much for info on the horn and alarm! We ordered 2 of them and are so impressed by the high quality they are. Surely these will add to our arsenal to protect our RAD mini's. We already have the Kryptonite huge chain and Ulock. We love that this Juiced horn can be simply set when we pull into park but a quick tap of the remote! Thanks again Liz!!
I bought a British made LITELOK in the U shape as you were holding. It destroys angle grinder cutting wheels and are ABSOLUTELY the best locks made because they use a proprietary metal/ceramic fused material. You need to talk about it more in this video.
This is maddening. For most motion alarms, they are connected to the battery, so you must make a choice: Turn on the alarm, leaving the battery on the bike, or take the battery with you without use of the alarm. I personally use the alarm, along with TWO 16 mm hardened steel U-locks. I also have a folding ebike, so I can place it out of sight in certain situations, Further, even if thieves defeat both my locks and the alarm, they/he/she has to unfold the bike, which could take a couple minutes to figure out if one is not experienced with folding bikes. One last thing. Having these excellent locks does little good if your bike is locked to a structure that can be cut much more easily than struggling with the locks.
I'm waiting on my LITELOK. It's in the current batch due to start shipping this month. That, along with the built-in electronic lock/alarm, a gold standard lock, as well as a disk lock, will hopefully be too much work, and a potential thief will move on. I am thinking of getting a cover as well. Let's face it they are pretty inexpensive protection.
That's awesome. I really like the LITLOK, let me know how you like yours. Looks like you will have all your bases covered now. See you on the bike trail, and thanks for watching.
My newest bike is a bit heavy at 176 lbs but the battery cost almost 2k and I have to lift this beast to the 5th floor of my apartment lol. It's not easy but I love this bike 😂. I try not lock it ANYWHERE but if I have to I use 3 of the liteloks and one of the heavy-duty kryptonite chains. Good video!
Liz, here’s another tip, lock your bike carrier to the receiver, it’s very easy for two people to drive up pull your receiver pin and throw your property into the back of their pickup. It takes 10 seconds.
Yes. My bike rack is hardened steel chain locked to my truck hitch AND it weighs 50 pounds by itself. They can take it but it won't be easy and it won't be quick. Thanks for watching.
it wasn’t an E bike, but I purchased my first expensive bicycle while living on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. as an afterthought, I asked him about bike locks.
Great comment, thanks so much for this, Erich! Glad to have you. here, see you in the next one.
Snacth and grab is the most common theft.
NYC? Why not Kentucky or Arkansas or West Virginia where theft is far greater per capita?
In NYC you got your life to worry about 🤣
Thanks for your comment, be safe!
NYC isn’t that the place where the best hot sauce is made?
4 times I am sorry for you mom
Yep, I'm right there with you, Cathy. I am triple locking!!! Glad you enjoyed this video, feel free to share it!
It's called "multiple layers of protection."
@@JohnBowl14690 Underkill in California, also!
The joys of living at campgrounds and RVing. If more only knew all the headaches involved.
Thomyt
Liberals love ebikes and have no issues ignoring laws.
What kind of chains? Hardened security chains are NOT cheap.
Apple air tag with the speaker removed
That’s why I keep my bike inside my van. They don’t know it’s there and it’s harder to get access to it.
MY RULES:
KEEP IT INSIDE THE VEHICLE (you said you could not so Then INCLOSE it with some kind of cover!!!)
Get several locks, a chain one and a U lock AND ANOTHER!!! Yes, three locks.
Never leave the bike out of your sight if outside, NEVER!!! (yes, hard to do)
NEVER leave the battery in the bike! (easy to do)
Engrave the bike with info, lots of info!
Get an alarm, simple cheap and easy.
Get a personal camera to watch your RV at all times.
Use a tracker (not that good, but what the hell).
I did not know the insurance info you provided. Bummer.
Good video!
Good tips, thanks for watching James!
It is truly disgusting the world we live in. My advice...if I cannot carry, I DONT go.
Good info. Thanks. 😊
In addition to removing the battery consider removing one pedal (install quick disconnect pedals) and removing the seat post.
If you have quick release on your seat post you're a fool. Lose the lever and get a hex bolt & lock nut; my post alone costs $150 not including the seat. I've had 2 seats & posts stolen due to the ease to do so, just FYI...
Good to know with these tips. Thanks to both of you, Peter & Rodney. See you in the next video.
(they are there to help you replace a key if you lose it)
Wow, that is pretty brazen. Thanks so much for sharing this, Neil. Your comment is sure to help others. See you in the next video.
Wow, Ed, that ramp sounds super handy. Thanks for your comment!
Hi Ron! Glad to hear you have more than one lock! Be safe out there and happy riding!
Very thorough information and perfect delivery!!!!
Thanks so much, Mary! Sure appreciate your support and encouragement!
Thanks YOU!
Awww, thanks so much for your comment! Happy riding!
Ooh, that would be so awesome if RVs were more bike friendly with a place to store. Thanks for this!
Wanted to thank you again Liz for this video. My son just bought his first E bike and I’m sending this to him to take this whole topic very seriously. Can’t thank you enough.
Awww, thanks so much for saying so, glad this helped!!
Great advice! I insured our e-bikes with our insurance company (Safeco) using a motorcycle policy. About $400 for two bikes per year. Another great video, Liz!
I’d go naked before I’d spend $400 to insure two bikes.
@@dandydon6049 but the cost to replace two stolen bikes can be close to $2000. However, one could spend on the best theft prevention devices and put money aside in case that doesn't work. And remember, they said they used a motorcycle policy to cover their e-bikes, so maybe that affects the cost?
@@lauravictorious4670 Very true, but I think I’ll still take my chances.
@@dandydon6049 LOL 😁
So glad you did that, thanks Paul!
Glad you like that alarm, it's a good one. Thanks for your comment, Debbie! See you in the next video.
So glad you checked with your insurance company. Sounds like you are loving your new ride. See you on the bike trail! Thanks for watching.
Great review. Love the GPS tracker tip.
To go 1 more step in security - get a 2nd lock and lock the wheel so they can't ride off or even roll the bike away, just thread the lock around the tire rim, plus it's an additional lock they'll have to cut.
Good tip, thanks George!
Great tips Liz. I'm an avid cyclist so really appreciate the review of the Litelok - I'll have to look into that.
It's a good one for sure. I was quite impressed and use it all the time. Thanks for watching, Craig!
Angle grinder “resistant” doesn’t mean it can’t be cut.
@@dandydon6049 yeah, if you have a generator, plenty of discs, and time!
I hadn't heard of them and wonder if they are better than a hardened steel chain lock. Thanks for your comment.
I know it. I really learned a lot and hope my painful story helps others. Thanks for being here, Renata!
she should just get off the road.
@@mikesecor6074 jealous much!
Good for you. I enjoyed the CCX when I had it before switching to the RCS. Juiced makes good products. Happy riding to you!
I don’t have an E bike but I do use that cable lock for my generator. It’s gone I’m gonna get a good chain. Thanks Liz another great video and wow 80,000!
I know it, so exciting! Thanks and yes get a chain before someone takes that genny. See you in the next video.
Thank you for your comment, Rodger! Happy riding!
Excellent advice. It's sad we have to resort to so many preventative (and costly) measures just to keep thieves foiled.
You are so right. It is sad but true. Thank you for watching.
my go to is 1 chain lock 1 folding lock and a u lock and sometimes a cheap cable lock just for the front wheel. on my ebike built a lil box to store them all in just so there there
but its not, because they will just cut whatever you lock it to and sometimes the bike itself and just hawk the parts they can ...just look at bike parking you will often see many locks still attached to them lol.. but anymore people will just come after you no matter where you are, because we as a people prefer to just watch or video those around us getting screwed not doing much of a damn thing about it.. and even if they get caught in many areas its just catch and release. be prepared to defend yourself and those around you. people just dont care about people anymore
This is a good tip, I'm sure it will help many who are reading this. Thanks for your comment, and for watching. Be careful out there~!
Most thieves don't want to spring for a new battery (Juice > $500) so removing is your 1st lock
In campgrounds, I lay down, cover and lock to my rear axel! Hope they never cut that!
now?
Yep. Even my bike rack is locked to my hitch using a hardened steel chain lock. Nothing is 100% theft proof, of course. Thanks for watching.
Thank you Liz. This is very helpful. I also had the misconception that campgrounds and hotels were safe places.
Yeah, I’m sorry I learned the hard way. Thanks for watching!
Good tips, thank you so much!!!
Hey girl, Gary from Kansas here. I'm actually looking to purchase an ebike. This is an awesome video! You are a great youtuber and I always appreciate your videos!! Stay safe, girl!!
Thanks bunches, Gary. Big hugs to you! Happy riding and looking forward to seeing you on the bike trail.
Excellent, informative, well paced video…concise without extraneous talk…great job!
So kind of you to say! Feel free to share this video!
This is good to know, thanks for your comment, Rodney.
Excellent review ! Excellent information! Excellent info for New owners! Excellent product information! This is a 5 ***** review !! ❤ For the record I do use Tag as well remove my battery !
Yay! So glad to hear this. Thanks for watching!
Great video. We have been camping for 37 years. Campgrounds we’re much safer then than now. Nobody messed with your property back then. This world has gone to sh## over the years for sure😡😡
That is SO true. I've been camping since the late 80s so I remember as well. Heck, nobody even locked their doors. Thanks for watching.
Great video Liz, you are right about the thieves they don’t care anymore about getting caught. These precautions are necessary for these crazy times.
Indeed! Thanks for watching and commenting. See you in the next video.
Great info Liz, you are right thieves are everywhere. you cannot be too careful!
Agreed. Thanks for watching, Paul!
Thank you! Yes, campgrounds have become targets for thieves, especially ebikes. Thanks for watching and see you in the next video.
Very informative!!!!!!!! It isn't just in cities anymore.
That is so true, Dan. Thanks for watching.
Thanks Liz! My wife and I love your channel and we get so much information! Keep up the good work, you’ll hit 100K soon I’m sure!
Yay! Thanks so much for your support and encouragement, Joseph! See you in the next video.
Thanks Liz!! Grateful through your perseverance you were able to find and get your bikes back the last time. 🤗😮
Indeed. I was so grateful. Thanks for watching Charlene!
Great addition to the comments, thanks for this William!
I use BULLYDOG lock with alarm and remote.
Gotta have something. Thanks for watching.
Such excellent advice! I would not know about the motion alarm or the electronic finder if you didn’t talk about it. Thanks for the education! Best wishes Liz! 🍀🙋🏻♀️
Sure appreciate your support and kind words each week, Theresa!
Thank you, Liz! Clear & well-presented…straight to the point and no filler! I’ll share this with Facebook bike groups that I think should know about this, if they’re not already aware.
Here’s to a theft-free future! 🙏
Yes. When parents become parents again in spite of the government.
Thanks so much for the share!!! And for your kind words!
You're awesome Liz. Such great information. Sad that thieves are pretty much everywhere. Would like to hear the story on how you got your bike back (after it was stolen)? I assume the Air Tag lead you to it but hopefully, the theif got his come uppins.
She did a video showing how she alerted police and then using the airtag they went to the address and got the bike.
@@rosemarydoran9907 Cool. Did the thief get arrested?
@@Milesco If it was in NY. hell, no ask Bragg.
Hi Lisa! Here's the link to that video, and thanks for watching: th-cam.com/video/0OLzntLQS3U/w-d-xo.html
@@Milesco - In this day and age the thief likely got a slap on the wrist... if that.
Great advice! One thing to remember, cut-resistant bike locks are near useless "if" you lock your bike to something that's really easy to cut!
Yes! I did a follow up video here, and thanks for watching: Thieves took four ebikes from my campground and hotel | theft prevention tips
th-cam.com/video/yh18F3x5ktY/w-d-xo.html
This was so good.
Sorry for your losses but thanks for sharing what you’ve learned.
Thanks so much, Monica. Hoping this NEVER happens again. And thanks for watching!
Good to know. Thank you!
I love the bike horn / alarm I will definitely get one for my e-bike. As usual you are amazing Liz great video ❤❤❤
Thanks so much for your kind words, Jeff. Yes, that horn is awesome!
I mentioned on your video when you got your bike stolen at the hotel; lock it, cover it and back it up to a tree, bush or wall if you can to make it more difficult to get to. Thanks for another great video.
Yes, I remember your comment. Thanks for watching this follow up!
Thanks for another great video with more great tips Liz. Just a shame to have to even consider and worry about these types of things. Jobs are plentiful everywhere at this time but gee, that would be too much like honest work.
I know it. So frustrating. Thanks for watching, Angie and feel free to share this video. See you in the next one.
There may be plentiful jobs but darn few pay a living wage. The people who aren’t stealing E-bikes are out there working 2 or 3 jobs just to get by.
That’s the real shame.
In many areas, no consequences for crime.
Great tips, thank you Rob! Yep, and covering it is definitely my #1 tip.
Great video and information. Thanks
Thank you Gary! And for commenting so soon, really helps the video!
Great video! Thorough, concise, and very useful help for a variety of communities!
Thanks so much, Tony, feel free to share.
I'd rather take advice from someone who's had an e-bike for 4 years, and never had it stolen.
Honestly, there's a difference between learning and knowing.
Although I have to admit, your plan is better than mine.
Which was to catch, cook, and eat them.
It's not easy to share my mistakes but I know by doing that I help others. Thanks for watching, Reuben.
Thanks for taking the time to share the things you’ve unfortunately had to learn the hard way. Also Progressive insurance sucks, I would never insure through them - they take every loophole to not pay.
They do indeed. USAA (and other renters insurance) will likely pay. Call your agent to be sure. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for this. Nothing is 100% theft proof, that's for sure. See you in my latest video right here: th-cam.com/video/h5f2KhXOvrY/w-d-xo.html
Excellent video and info. I just bought a TREK e-bike and don’t leave it anywhere…but that could change one day and want to be prepared.
Will that work for our politicians?
Yeah, I am pretty steamed thieves get away with so much. Thanks for watching.
My EBike has a quick removable front tire. Removing the front tire and battery will help make it a lesser target. They might get bike parts off it and the $20 worth of scrap metal. But also you can remove the seats easily. So no tire, battery and seat they may just pass.
Good tips, thanks so much!
Air tags are cheap and cheerful….but there are a lot of trackers on the market…usually with expensive subscriptions which i think are rip off..you buy the expensive ,tracker then they let you into the secret of the subscription cost..buyer beware..i like air tag though…
Yep. That's why I mentioned the trackers. It's hard to stay even one step ahead of thieves that's for sure. Thanks for your comment, and for watching.
This is a great and helpful tip. Thanks for your comment! See you in the next video.
-Jon
I always imagined that Progressive was crap insurance, thanks for verifying
I just got that insurance. Went through a broker and they came out the best. Wasn't thrilled but needed to find something quickly.
Thank you so much for saying this. See you in the next video.
Hey Liz, Great tips for securing an ebike! I am sad that you had to go through 4 thefts to pass this info. Safe travels and TC is hunkering down for another bad storm. (again) Hope to see you someday in Bama. Peace out!
Thanks Tim, hope you survived that storm in one piece. And thanks for being here.
One of your absolute best content videos! Excellent Information! While we do not own e-bikes, yet, we will soon enough and are glad you shared this information! Thank you
Yay! Thanks so much for your kind words, Wendi! Looking forward to seeing you on the bike trail!

Yes, I love my alarm, too. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Thanks for the tips!!
Thanks for being here, Julie! And for watching.
My bike anti theft device is owning a piece of crap rusty old bike. I've left this eye sore out for years. No one will touch it. LOL!!!!
That's a smart strategy for sure. Thanks for your comment, Paul, and for watching.
Don't let anyone lie to you, everyone knows the sound of a shotgun being racked! It's a pretty good deterrent....
Good to know. You definitely have to be on your toes and keep your stuff secured as well as alert and aware. Thanks for your comment.
great collection of experience
Thanks James. Not an easy video to make but I am sure it will help others. Thanks for watching.
Really good info.
Thanks Steven! And for helping me get closer to 100k!
I’d like to hear the story about the retrieval how far away it was and did you have to confront anyone?

Thanksk Sidney. Tammy, here is the video I referenced and thanks for watching: th-cam.com/video/0OLzntLQS3U/w-d-xo.html
This is good to know, thanks for sharing. Enjoy that Rip!
I’m So sorry for you & the others! Sounds like there are more low life’s cruising the camp grounds than in most residential neighborhoods! If I owned a CG there would be tight controlled access and anyone caught being naughty would be physically punished !
Exactly! So frustrating. But I hope it never happens again. Thanks for watching, Rick.
Oh thanks for this, I'm sure your comment will help others. Happy riding!

I am a newbie to the E-bike world.
You have learned the hard way through personal experiences. THANK YOU for sharing. MOST helpful.😊😊
Awww, thanks so much! Hugs to you!
I bought a British made LITELOK in the U shape as you were holding. It destroys angle grinder cutting wheels and are ABSOLUTELY the best locks made because they use a proprietary metal/ceramic fused material. You need to talk about it more in this video.
Yes, those Liteloks are awesome. I plan to mention them again later this month. Thanks for watching, Eric and happy riding.
This horn is not connected to the battery- yay! And yes, you definitely want to lock it to something solid. Thanks for watching.
Good video!
wowsa, that sounds super heavy!!! Happy riding and enjoy!
