Series S running this game at 4K120 is a curious one. Why not have Series X and PS5 render it at 6K or 8K? The Touryst did that for its 60fps mode and it looks wonderful.
@spiral7399 Render, my dude. Not output. Of course there is a point. Rendering a game at 8K and then downscaling back to 4K essentially gives you 2x SSAA. It leads to superb anti-aliasing. Again, there’s already games that do this, like The Touryst and the Ori games.
This is the type of game that WOULD BE GREAT in VR! Great gameplay, great performance. Even the camera is fixed to the character/scene and completely automated! It would run perfectly in VR with a TRIVIAL port.

It is unfortunate, because I really enjoyed everything the team who created Sonic Mainia has done for the community and even gaming as a whole. Thanks Digital Foundry for releasing this review. Never heard of this game but I’m glad I know now. The character art looks very much inspired by 90’s Sega 3D platformers. Almost like I’ve seen it before. Gonna check this out on Steam tonight.
Played it since day one, the visuals and music are such a treat! I definitely enjoyed that unique depth of field effect, it kind of reminds me of quirky rendering techniques from back then, like the dithering in Sega Saturn games. As a huge Mario fan, the momentum based platforming took some getting used to but it’s so worth it!
I was thinking... if the game changes its resolution according to the system resolution on the Nintendo Switch (I even put it at 480p just to see if it really changed and it did) that means that if the Switch 2's successor supports it 4K resolutions on the Dock will the game be able to run at this resolution without the team having to make any patches? I'm starting to wonder if that's why they did it and if any other games on the Switch work this way.
Awesome, the game looks so much fun! I loved the small box which displays the song, composer and song countdown, is this new or has the overlay been used before?
Just think, if SEGA had any idea what they were doing and actually respected their devs and their audience, we could be having brand new Sonic games that are this good
Looking at those criteria of what makes a good platformer... and a game made in a custom engine; It seems like John should check out Cloudbuilt, from 2014. A momentum based, 3d platformer, destinct style, great music, and on a custom engine. A game overlooked by most sadly. When talking about wanting more of these kind of games, it feels strange to me to do so when seemingly not really being aware of what actually already exists. It feels like both a miss by the marketing and the devs, but also like the ones claiming to be fans of the genre, as they are not really staying on top of it? And that does not really send the signals to devs that there actually is interest out there right?
bought it on PS5 really expecting perfection because of this video. however, the game is still riddled with bugs, especially if you play for max score (for me the only fun way to play it), bugs which come in various types: collision, getting stuck inside a wall, physics/momentum bugs, being rocketed through the stage for no apparent reason, etc. some people reported the bugs were minimal, like one or two in a 20 hour playthrough but I have at least two of them per session (I play one, two hour sessions max). the game is a lot of fun when everything works as expected, but its very frustrating when the game knocks you out of a 40x combo because of its jank

Me: No, this is what balan wonderworld should have been, qualitatively at least: a 3D platformer with new ideas and state-of-the-art graphics that plays a lot like older 3D platformers. If only...
Great video, guys, and thanks for the tips on graphical output. Definitely could use it going forward.
Wow spot on, BWs gameplay was just poorly executed and bland.
@@TerrorOfTalos Absolutely. Now just think about this: that game was helmed by Yuji Naka of Sonic the Hedgehog fame. This was helmed by the guys of Sonic Mania fame. It's very telling, isn't it?
@@MentalLiberation Sure is.
@@TerrorOfTalos in any event, I got to dive into this game. I played the demo and it was fun
Another great vid, John! Thank you for sharing your passion with us.
kinda makes you amazed how it goes from Series S 120 to 30 on switch
Imagine a 3D Sonic Platformer that worked with mechanics and a camera similar to this one. Literally what I've been asking ever since the Saturn days
This is the type of game that WOULD BE GREAT in VR!
Great gameplay, great performance. Even the camera is fixed to the character/scene and completely automated!
It would run perfectly in VR with a TRIVIAL port.
I wonder if John left out some movement options on purpose, these things are probably best left ambiguous since they're so much fun to discover.
I think he really forgot about the dashing, quite noticable how he wasn't utilizing it in his gameplay.
@@TerrorOfTalos Might have been on purpose as to keep some movement options a surprise
@@axeldeeker5644 Hope so lol
I overlooked this when it came out as I was not a fan of Penny's design. It is unfortunate, because I really enjoyed everything the team who created Sonic Mainia has done for the community and even gaming as a whole. Thanks Digital Foundry for releasing this review. Just purchased it for my PS5 and can't wait to play it
Yeeah the music is class in this haha 🔥🔥👌
Never heard of this game but I’m glad I know now. The character art looks very much inspired by 90’s Sega 3D platformers. Almost like I’ve seen it before. Gonna check this out on Steam tonight.
Same developer as Sonic Mania
Bonus points awarded for Tim Robinson reference!
I wish we got more games like this..
Since I don't have a 120fps tv, I'm going to try this out in PSVR2!!
Devs like this need to be protected at all costs.
They are a dying breed.
Having 4K120 on Series S is wild!
If it runs this good. It's a nice candidate for a VR port.
Sega should hire these guys to do a 3D Sonic game in the vein of the classic Sonic 3D Blast.
They're never going back to sonic lmao
Nice to sees native 4K 120fps on all consoles without the nonsense dynamic res or image reconstruction and doing that with in house tech.👍
Man john you sold me on it. Had it on my wishlist for a while. Im going to go and take the plunge. Plus 4K 120fps is a rare space on consoles
We all know who can make the next proper Sonic Adventure ❤
The people that actively don't want to work with Sega again?
Awesome, the game looks so much fun! I loved the small box which displays the song, composer and song countdown, is this new or has the overlay been used before?
thanks for the review i am going to give it a go, will you be covering another crabs tresure?
Just think, if SEGA had any idea what they were doing and actually respected their devs and their audience, we could be having brand new Sonic games that are this good
Beat this game at launch, it's a delight. I highly recommend it to every kind of gamer, especially those who were looking for another 3D platformer!
This is the timeline where Sega Saturn won the console war!
Beautiful game!
Looks fun and a chance to enjoy framerate over graphics.
I wouldn't mind the DOF if it was a standard effect, but that swimming graininess they went with would drive me crazy.
