Aloha, I very much appreciate your warmth, sincerity, and desire to spread healing and love. I also appreciate the humility you show by saying "as far as you understand" when talking about the origin of this song. I can assure you that it is definitely not "an ancient Hawaiian song". I know that this prayer has been very beneficial to many people, and I am not criticizing the song or the prayer, but it is important to understand that there is really not much Hawaiian about it aside from the borrowed name. Some people claim that the words are a translation from Hawaiian. This is not so (and yes, I do speak 'Ōlelo Hawaiʻi, the Hawaiian language). It isn't even possible to translate the English prayer into Hawaiian; there are no separate Hawaiian words for "forgive me" and "I'm sorry". The closest is "e kala mai 'oe ia'u", meaning "release me (from my fault)". And while apology is sometimes necessary in any culture, a more typically Hawaiian mindset centers on connection, appreciation, and gratitude. "Hoʻoponopono" is actually the name of a traditional group conflict resolution process that inspired something, which in turn inspired something else, and so on, that eventually - and distantly - led to the prayer/song that you are familiar with. Again, I am not criticizing the prayer, but I really wish it had been given a different name to prevent the confusion! If you are curious about genuine traditional Hoʻoponopono, there is, surprisingly, a pretty good article on Wikipedia. Mālama pono ā hui hou!

Good of you to chime in with this valuable insight. Thank you for your patience and understanding with us, as we adore this song and the vibration it holds. Yes, I wish we could credit a songwriter, but we haven't been able to find the song's origin story. All we know first-hand is the way it feels musically: comforting and liberating. Thanks again for your compassionate comment.

Thank you for addressing this problem. There's been an a growing number of people who practice and use this word. And it hurts to hear it being mispronounced and butchered.

Saw my kinesiologist for the second time a few days ago. My subconscious reacted to the ho’oponopono symbol. Now I’m learning about it and it truly resonates. Beautiful song and singing 💕

Yes, this feels like a song that could heal the world. Maybe it'll be taught in public schools one day. This is our guitar chord progression, FYI: Am G F7 E.

Lovely. Simple. I learned: I'm sorry. Please forgive me. I love you. Thank you. But all works, I am sure. :)

Yes, in fact we first learned this song from our kids. They heard it at a summer camp, and they sang it similarly to the way you've written: I'm so sorry. Please forgive me. Thank you. I love you.

Good song but doubt this can actually change a narcissist, egoistic or hypocritical person.
