My best ever burn barrel. Use a porcelain or stainless steel drum from a washing machine mount the drum from a dryer on top of it. Use a galvanized trash can lid with some small holes in it for a lid. Burns hot and near complete without a lot of sparks. Washer drum without the dryer top works excellent too.

You keep at it, make some bio-chard for later use.
Will come in handy for plants, filtration, etc. 🤙

About 1990 I made one over at my Grandparents using an air chisel to take the top off, chisel works great but the noise is out of this world.

You want to cut 2 1/2 by 2 1/2 inch flaps in the barrel. Push them into the barrel about an inch, All pointing the same way so that the air will swirll. Put these flaps from the bottom to the top.

Wow, and to think about all the burn barrels created with just a barrel and the pointy end of a pick for banging in the holes. lol

I love the fact that you are doing things that some people will not. But the bits that you are using are wood bits. You need to use metal bits for this type of application.

Great video, get a drill bit sharpening jig. Then get all the drills ready to go.

I drill a hole in the top large enough to accept a jig saw blade and cut the top off with that. Makes for a nice cut, and I don't have to worry about shooting sparks all over the place or burning a hole in my hoodie.

That's a good one too! Fortunately no hoodies were damaged in the making of this barrel. LOL

Jigsaw aw heck get the sawzall out with a metal blade or better yet get the torch

My neighbour nearly lost his head cutting the top off and oil barrel, so I wouldn't recommend a cutting torch.
Have more control with a jigsaw to cut a straight line I find as it a lesser aggressive saw.@@mammam8546

Ask all your friends ( mostly guys ) if they have a nibbler, or a plasma cutter. Someone will.

.. set the barrel in a field with a few pieces of tape spots for targets on it .... may as well get a little target practice while creating a few holes .... might need a magnum though .. or a rifle ..

Next time, cold chisel and a hammer. That top would be opened up before you can plug the grinder in.

Why didn't you just use the step drill? Precision is not important, so.... Personally, I prefer to use my "sawsall" because there are no sparks and it makes a better, cleaner cut especially for round cut like removing a barrel top. Cheers from the middle of nowhere in Alberta, Canada.

My dad said the same thing about the step drill! Now I know. LOL I do much more woodworking than metalworking usually. cheers!
