    Thank you about your in depth talk about the flannel. I've been struggling with prettying up my scrub rags and woven flannel is my answer (thanks to you). With a woven flannel I won't be worried about stains as much as a flowered calico. Thanks for giving me the info to move forward in treating myself to more pretty in my life. Your video made a difference. Thanks. Sending lots of love 💕 from sunny 🌞 Arizona 🌵. Take care of yourself and each other. 😷

    Invest in a bidet. They attach to your toilet under the seat and tap in to the water tank supply. They only cosy about $20 on Amazon and then all your using the cloth wipes for is to dry. I’ve been doing this for years.

    Pinking shears work pretty well for this. If you just wanna do a no sew edge that won't fray. :)

      That is a great idea am moving out in a couple of months guess what I have been doing. Made my own cloth pad. Unpaper towel, produce bags. Grocery bag. I made my own laundry bag. This is my next project. I will be having a paperless home and saving money at the same time. Ps all these I recycled from my old clothes and sheets. Greet money saver

    With this Covid 19 pandemic, the store shelves are almost completely bare. I Will be taking NO chances.
    I Will be making fabric/cloth toilet wipes as well as fabric/cloth sanitary pads.
    It's best to stock up on these items,
    You wouldn't want to get caught with your pants down!
    BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY!

      @@TarasSimpleCrochet Awesome! There's really nothing fancy needed in making cloth toilet paper. Just cut fabric, into strips the size of the amount of toilet paper squares you would normally use. Then stitch around the edge. VIOLA!

      Same here! I can't locate any tp anywhere! At 1 roll left I'm going to make those as well. I've already been into minimalism for a few yrs now so I'm happy to make those, never even occurred to me before this pandemic to go TP free... Everything else I have now is up-cycle, easy to go this way!!

    Hi, reading through your comments I smiled, because posting a video like this there's no way to AVOID the TMI question is there? I'd never heard of family cloths until today and I'm hoping you can offer some advice. Assuming we've finished freaking out at the whole idea of them, the basic requirements are a big enough pile of clean cloths and a bucket for used cloths? You offer the spray bottle to help clean up the soiling that happens with No. 2's, do you spray the cloth then wipe? (Duh! of course you do, unless you're a flippin' contortionist) I wonder at your reusable monthly cloths & forgive me for being incredibly personal, but, is that all the girls in your house use or is it just supplemental to internal protection? And how do you deal with them once used (& HOW do you manage the stains?) I think the idea is so alien to us nowadays that a 'Noddy - How to....' step by step video is a good idea, I think everyone's biggest fear is hygiene, then laundry (what temp is a 'sanitise' wash?) & do you use biological washing powder or make your own? which makes the lack of staining even more impressive! Do you offer TP to guests in your home or do you just keep brand new cloths on hand for them? Thank you in advance and I apologise if I've in any way offended, it was not my intention at all.

    Tina, Just to let you know that my husband & I have been using Dollar Tree wash cloths, 2 for 1.00, I got 6 double packs or total of 12 washcloth cloths. We wash towels every other day. For many years we used a dark blue and green. When I replaced them I was able to but gray and green washcloths. We fold and put them in their own pile in the towel cabinet. Everyday after use the cloths are thrown into the towel pile, we wash and fold ALL washcloths with towel and hand towels, and put them back into the cabinet. Our detergent has anti viral eo. Thank you for the flannel idea, I will look for them and Thank you. cl

    I love the way yours turned out! I made some with an overlock foot, although I haven't washed them yet, I just LOVE the perfect, even fraying on the sides of yours! It looks so cute! I have a handheld bidet attachment, so I ended up doing mine 2 ply but rectangular rather than square so I can roll them on a tp roll or a piece of small PVC. The 2-ply is better with a bidet for all the extra water clean up.

      I know you posted this comment a while ago but I've been using Family Cloth for a while. I made a bunch of them a few years ago. I just use them for #1. But it's worked really well with no smell. I make them about the size of a sheet of toilet paper, using flannel. I cut it double the size and then sew the three ends together inside out and turn it just before closing up the last end. I sew them by hand since I had so much trouble with my machine and it goes pretty quickly. I hope you are enjoying the cloths. I love them. For washing, I just bought a small longerie laundry thing and I put that in a garbage can in the bathroom and keep them in there, then zip up and wash.

    Great to see someone still sews! And the use of "family cloths" - I have to give you a lot of credit for doing this. It took a bit to wrap my head around it, but it's a great idea as long as you have the sanitize feature for washing. That's something I don't have. I'd be bleaching the heck out of everything and doing a lot of small loads since there are only 2 people in the house. Still, a great way to save $ and resources.

      Chattahoochee Homestead It took my hubby a bit to adjust as well. I really love it though and it has been totally worth it! I think that using a hot cycle like you use for your whites would be fine. I use vinegar instead of bleach because we are on a septic system and it works great.

    Hello, I was doing a search on alternatives to using paper toilet paper and came across here. I am finding I am allergic to the toilet paper, any brand, and the unbleached paper is very expensive. I am going to make myself some of these wipes, but I have a question regarding washing of them when one does more than wipe urine. I do not know how else to ask such a delicate question, but if you could share. Thank you so much

      +vivian king No worries! Generally they don't get as nasty as you would think. I make sure to open them all up before laundering and run them through the washer on a sanitize cycle. They always come out clean. Should you have extremely messy bowls (for example if someone was ill...sorry) you could rinse or soak them like you would cloth diapers. It isn't as gross as many people think. I think that you will really like them. Hope that helps.

    My late grandmother told me about such things in her day. They would use a white wash cloth to wash their bottoms after going potty; called a potty cloth, then there were kitchen cloths. When finished each person was responsible for hand washing out their cloth own cloth.

    I call it cloth tp . I switched several years ago & never looked back. I just cut up old, white T shirts.
    New sewing needed. Jersey doesn't fray.
    I just stuff the cloths in clothespin bags which I hang in our bathrooms. Super simple. I have a flip-top waste can in each bathroom (w/a bucket liner) for tossing cloths in after use. Never have had an odor problem.

    • @suzisaintjames
      @suzisaintjames 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      So, I get that you line your bucket with clothespin bags, but do you take them out of the bags to wash? Or do you throw the bag and the cloths still inside into the wash machine (like lingerie in a lingerie bag)? 💕🌞🌵😷

    • @patwagner9308
      @patwagner9308 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      3:06 Oh, I must not have explained my system very well!
      I keep a supply of clean cloth tp in clothespin bags ( 1 in each of our 2 bathrooms). After I use a cloth, I toss it in the flip top wastecan. It has a removable bucket liner. When it's time to wash the used cloths, I just take the bucket out, dump the cloths in the washer, then put the bucket liner back in the flip top can. The clothespin bags are only for storing clean cloths. The clothespin bags don't line the bucket s. The flip top cans are for used cloths. Some people put clean cloths in a basket...I keep mine in clothespin bags. Are you familiar w/ a clothespin bag? They're old-fashioned. It's a bag w/ a hanger in the top so it can be hung on a clothesline. And it has an opening near the top so you can reach in to get clothespins. I hang my bags on a hook near both toilets.. then I can reach into the bag & get a clean cloth. So,no, the clothespin bags are not used the way lingerie bags are.. I hope that clears things up. 🙋‍♀️ 😊 @@suzisaintjames

    I've been doing this for several years. I don't do anything to the edges since I'm the only one that uses them. I dont really care if they fray on the edges. My family are traditionalist and think that cloth wipes are gross. But I like them better then traditional tp, I think they make me cleaner and they do a better job. I also use cloth pads. I think it's better for the environment.

    I've been using cloths made from flannel for about 6 month now. I wash them in very hot water and hang them outside to dry. I have a very large fabric stash, so have used flannel that was too small to really make anything else. We too use cloth napkins and fabric rags. I do use paper napkins when I take my dog for a walk and need to clean up after him.

      Maybe it's TMI to ask, but the spray bottle? Use before wiping? I know some Middle Easterners that keep a plant waterer, the kinds with long narrow necks that pour in a single hole, by their toilets. All I learned was they'd fill up the waterer with warm to hot water when going in to poop.

    • @MyHomesteadingProjectChannel
      @MyHomesteadingProjectChannel  9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      VivianRinSC Not to be too graphic :/ but I only use the sprayer when it's "that time of the month". It is also handy if someone is suffering from a stomach flu (loose or runny stools). You could also use the bottles like they give you at the hospital that have a stream of water. Hope that's not TMI. :).

      The pattern is part of the fabric and not printed on it. That means if your flanell has blue lines the yarn they used was really blue. Woven patterns don't wash off, so the tissues look good for much longer. But for the wiping act itself it makes no difference what flanell you use. 😊

    I am allergic to fragrances so have to buy unscented TP. Quilted northern is the best brand I have found that is unscented. After watching this video I decided to figure out just what we are paying per wipe. I decided 6 squares was an average amount used. I buy a a years worth of packages when Costco puts it on sale so I always get it there. I pay about $15 for 30 rolls. I did the math:
    267 squares per roll x 30 rolls= 8010 squares for the $15.
    8010÷6 (the amount used per wipe)=1335 wipes
    $15÷1335 wipes = .011 cents per wipe.
    Now compare that to a gallon of vinegar at $3 a week to soak the rags in. We would have to wipe and wipe 273 times a week to break even with the cost of toilet paper that doesn't require any washing or storage after use.

    • @akashanumberfive199
      @akashanumberfive199 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      tjkasgl what i find is that you fold the wipe and use it several times. Ive literally never used more than a two wipes for even some intense cleaning. And mine arent even two ply! I sewed nothing. I just cut out pieces aroind the size of two squares of regular tp and that all i need . that being said some people use cloth to wipe up pee only and use regular tp for poop. I only use it when im not home. And only when ive run out of clean ones in my purse. It it so much softer and i find i dont get irrritated as mich as i used to

    • @MyHomesteadingProjectChannel
      @MyHomesteadingProjectChannel  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You are paying waaayyy too much for vinegar first off. Second, You should only need a gallon a month if that.These are much nicer to use, environmentally friendly and last for years! The ones that I showed on that video are now 5 years old and look just the same. They were repurposed from my son's pj pants so they really didn't cost me anything as they would have just gone to charity if I hadn't used them.Plus, you wouldn't have to worry about the chemicals and artificial scents.In the long run, you will save a ton! Let's see... what would 5 yrs of toilet paper for a household of 4 cost me???? Food for thought.
