  • Cloth Toilet paper may sound strange but it can save a lot of money, be much better for the environment, reduce our dependence on society and is a sustainable solution to sanitation. It would also be a good "prep" for those who like to prepare for disasters.

    For those not sure about this - start by doing what I do - use the cloths for urination (90% of the bathroom trips), and have regular T.P. for the rest (10%).

    My mother used cloth diapers and she wiped our bottoms with a clean wet wash cloth. back when I was born, there were no Pampers. She would rinse the soiled diapers and rags out in the toilet and put them in a covered bucket with dreft baby detergent along with the wash cloths.When she had enough for a load, which was every day or so, she washed them in hot water in the washer. so you who are squeamish, this is really nothing new. That was part of Baby laundry. She NEVER washed the rest of the other clothing in with those diapers and baby wash clothes.

      I cloth diaper my daughter and things have changed so much from the Stone Age lol. It's not recommended to boil diapers because of the fumes that come out of the waterproof pul. It's actually considered dangerous and voids warranties on most all cloth diapers.
      It's also not recommend to let diapers is a bet bucket because it's a breading group for bacteria

    • @MaxxsMummy
      @MaxxsMummy 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      That's because they're no longer 'proper' nappies / diapers. The original ones were terry towelling squares that you rinsed and then soaked overnight in either a special nappy powder and water or as I used to do, the Milton sterilising fluid that I'd used for that day's bottles. I'd rinse them out in the washing machine & then wash them on a boil wash with normal washing powder and fabric conditioner - no fumes, no problem - & I didn't live in the stone age. This was in the 80's and 90's!

      There were no pampers when i was a kid either. I remember having to shake out my younger siblings soiled diapers in the toilet, squeezing out the excess water and putting them in the bucket of water with laundry soap to wash. My mom always hung them in the sun and those diapers were always snowy white too. There were pampers by the time my own kids came along, but I chose to cloth diaper because it was much cheaper and our budget was very tight.

    I just made about 100 cloth wipes/toilet cloths today for my family - we started using a bidet this year and my husband was converted completely, we've cut down on our toilet paper usage a ton! When I mentioned this to him recently he was all for it, since we're pretty much just drying off after rinsing with the bidet. We used cloth diapers for our kid so the idea of "bathroom laundry" is already part of our routine, these wipes will get washed separately from all other laundry and on a sanitize cycle. We'll keep some TP for guests but we won't be using it anymore.

  • @nortfishlsweetnr6026

    This is a great idea, but I highly recommend adding a bidet to the toilet. It’s wonderful! The water does all the cleaning, leaving practically nothing left, so the cloth rags can be used just to clean up the wetness. This way they are not that dirty when thrown in the designated hamper.

    This is the same idea that is used in making "period" kits for girls in third world countries that enables them to be able to attend school and other functions instead of being stuck at home during that time. Great video! Every day I research ways to make my life better, easier, more economical. I have learned to make my own laundry soap, cleaning solutions and skin-care products, and everything I have made is infinitely superior to the commercial products they replaced. Same goes for flannel bathroom wipes. I was certainly skeptical and uneasy about trying them, but the truth is that you never know until you try. I stitched up twenty-five 8" square flannel wipes and stack them next to the commode on a sealed receptacle, which I use to store the used wipes until I'm ready to put them into the wash. So far, I only use them after I've emptied my bladder, and use toilet paper for more extensive cleanups. They are far more comfortable on delicate tissue, and they don't fall apart in my hand, so I think they're actually more sanitary. They have no chlorine bleach or formaldehyde in them, so I know I'm no longer exposing myself to the toxic chemicals used in paper production. No plastic wrap and cardboard roller to add to the recycling bin. Deforestation is largely the result of worldwide consumer demand for single use paper products; trees are critical to the survival of the planet. This has turned out to be a splendid way to save money AND the world!

    I did this for a while and am starting again. I think the biggest misconception people have is that they think you are wiping gobs of poop off with them. I know for me that wasn't the case. I already had a diaper sprayer hooked up and would use that as a sort of makeshift bidet, so the wipes were basically used just to pat myself dry... just like rinsing off in the shower and drying off with a towel. It's really not as gross as you might think!

    • @searose6192

      MyCrazyFamily I would really be interested to hear if this family uses a bidet. If not, I would say leaving feces covered fabric for a week is really pushing health safety, particularly considering that as far as I know, no washers get to boiling temps necessary to kill the scariest pathogens. We cloth diaper, and use “family cloth” but diapers are washed daily or every other day at longest and babies are exclusively breastfed, not eating heavily pathogenic meats, dairy, etc that adults/ older children eat. As for the family cloth, we do fully wash before using it so it is literally for drying off + in the case of females it’s drying urine only (we have no “blood” in the family) and it is washed usually daily even though it is no dirtier than our bath towels.

    I cut up my husband's old white T shirts & even his worn-out "tighty whiteies"....jersey material doesn't ravel & it's so soft ! I have a lot of cut-up pieces so I keep them in a couple bags....that's for the big supply. I have a cloth clothespin bag hanging from the toilet paper roll holder in each bathroom....I stuff a bunch of the cloth tp in those.....& I have a small, flip-top waste can in both bathrooms to toss the used cloth tp in. When it's time to do laundry, I just pull the liner bucket out of the waste can, dump the contents into the washing machine. When the supply gets low in the clothespin bag, I just grab a bunch from one of the bags of surplus & stuff them into the clothespin bags. This is a very easy, very efficient, very quick way of doing the cloth tp way. I started 3 yrs ago when I started watching Tawny & have never looked back.
    And, by the way, StarWish commenter is right ! Urination is the majority of our trips to the bathroom...so if you use cloth, boy, it really makes a difference in how often you need to buy regular tp !! And , I actually prefer cloth to paper. It's kinder.

    I've used cloth because of allergies for years. Most corn allergics can't handle the corn starch in tp and paper towels. When I first started I made extras for my shop to cover my start-up costs of using softer, nicer fabric like organic unbleached fleece. Hemp holds up best.

If I was, what I'd do differently is use the same procedure I used for my kids cloth diapers, have a wet bucket full of solution to drop them into rather than just the dry garbage bin. I've often thought how much toilet paper a woman has to use because we have to use it *every* time we go to the bathroom. I, myself, can go through an entire roll in just over a day. It's ridiculous. It's a waste of money, a detriment to the environment, and I am SO going to make these soon. I have my flannel washed and ready to go. Of course, I (being the only lady in the house) will be the only one using them, and only for urine, not anything else. I also cloth diapered my son. Financially, we didn't have a choice. In Puerto Rico we just use a bidet which looks like another toilet next to your regular toilet without the top seat. It has three knobs that turns the water sprinkler height in the center of the bidet. The other knobs turn on the cold and hot water. And you sit there and wash your front and back side which ever you want. And we have our own towel rack ring at the height of the bidet. A tip I picked up doing research on this topic is from "toilet paper alternative" video by "anarchistkitchen - she puts a delicate clothes, zip mesh bag in her container so that on laundry day, she simply picks up the bag, zips it shut and tosses into into the washer. I like your SS trash can better than her glass cookie jar and absolutely LOVE the beautiful, cheery look of the cloths rather than the wash cloths. But of course, both get the job done. I'll definitely copy your cloths idea and incorporate her zip mesh bag with your SS step on garbage can. Thank you so much for sharing!

    I'm not sure how much this will help... My suggestion would be to have a small water container possibly one that looks like a garden watering can that you can use to clean up with first then use those to dry. I think this would cut down on cleaning stains and things that will naturally occur with a woman's monthly cycle and bowl movement cleanup as well, just to encourage a little extra cleaning up front so less work later, plus this may also help those clothes to last a little longer.

I’ve been trying this for almost a week now , using recycled t-shirt material and a lidded jar with vinegar and water to soak them in after use. Haven’t had any smell in the bathroom and I’ve actually enjoyed dampening the cloth with warm water in the sink for #2 to make it work kinda like a bidet. (Until I can get a real bidet ) sorry. I know that’s TMI but just saying.

      They also have cheap washcloths in a large pack at Wal-Mart in a few basic colors that will do the trick if you can't sew or just don't want to go to a lot of trouble that will work just fine.

    I love the feel of cloth so much better than paper. I don't think I'll ever go back to paper.
    I actually started because I made cloth wipes for my youngest, who I cloth diaper. And with anyone who loves cloth...easily became addicted to doing more and more cloth through the house!
    I chose to use old t-shirts and double them (which you don't have to do, but I like it). Stitching with a zigzag or fun decorative stitch and playful colored thread. you could color code stitching if each person or bathroom had its own set.
    I played around with sizes but really just eye ball it now.
    So every season when I clear out the kid's (and occationally ours) clothes that are too small, I repurpose vs donating them. It's kind of fun to have a mix of colors or have memories tied to the fabric as you're doing your business. lol
    I store them in a wipes box.
    Thanks for the video.

    First after I watched this video , I said to myself : "naaah, I don`t think so", but then realized , that using this kind of cloth toilet paper for "non poop involved" purposes is a great solution for family and saves tons of money on toilet paper. And you still can buy a good quality toilet paper for the visitors and for, you know, cleaning poop. It is specially convenient for women and kids, all of these cloth toilet paper can be washed along with cloth panty liners and absorb better than disposable toilet paper.

    I thought this was absolutely gross...THEN I GAVE IT MORE THOUGHT. I started it a month ago and I am so pleased that I did. I just tore up some old pieces of cloth (robe, nightgown), but in the future I think I will do better and sew the edges, but for now it is working.

    Why not use a little toiletpaper and a bidet?

  • @theinsomniac4life
    @theinsomniac4life 10 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    I have to say that I think a bidet would be a far greener, and more sanitary way of going about this. Not to mention that they leave you feeling cleaner than wiping alone. Haven't had the opportunity to travel, and being in places where bidets are more common, I'm sold on their utility. There's little waste, and any water used is easily offset by the extra water required to wash your towels. For example, I never wash my clothes in hot water, and nor do I need to keep my hot water heater at a high enough temperature to sterilize since I'm not washing poop cloths.
    Also, I'd worry that your guests might think that the towels are cloth handtowels, as one might find at a tony restaurant, especially if they peek in the trash can and see a pile. But I'd be more worried that they'd look in the trash and smell something they'd rather not have. I don't know about anyone else, but most days I'd need to use a lot of those towels to go about my business.

    • @frugalgreengirl
      @frugalgreengirl  10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I don't think its quite so black and white. One person using a bidet can use as much water at the load it takes to wash 1 small load of laundry (I checked). If there were 4 people suing them then that would be 4 times as much water being used. Plus they use warm water too so there is the expense for that also. plus once a person has cleaned with the bidet they are left with a wet bottom. Then many use toilet paper to dry off. Now instead of toilet paper alone there is water and paper used, thats not greener. If a cloth is used to dry then you would still use a bunch of cloths just like we do. And there would be water to wash those as well in addition to the water the bidet wastes. Or if a cloth were reused to dry again and again then there is a used butt cloth hanging out in the bathroom. Hows that for company friendly?? especially if they accidentally used it like you said... Plus a bidet takes up a lot of space and costs WAY more to install. I don't think its a better choice and Im failing to see how its "by far greener."

    • @theinsomniac4life
      @theinsomniac4life 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      frugalgreengirl I agree that it's not black and white. However, bidets are very efficient. www.treehugger.com/bathroom-design/bidets-eliminate-toilet-paper-increase-your-hygiene.html
      No one has EVER used the amount of water that it takes to do a load of laundry. I don't know where you found that, but it's wrong. A standard washer uses up to 40 gallons for a normal-sized load, and not dramatically less for a small load. HE washers cut this in about half. A bidet uses on the order of ounces or cups to wash you clean. I can't imagine spraying 40 gallons of water at your rear end, or filling your toilet bowl with anything approaching a gallon. This is just plain wrong.
      A great cost to washing electricity, especially if you are sanitizing. I nearly always cold water wash. And my hot water heater is kept low, right at comfortable showering temperature because I don't need to sterilize. Over the course of a year this is a huge savings (sanitizing settings on a washer use even more electricity to sanitize). Here's a great calculator showing how much money can be saved, by for, example, washing in cold water, or line drying: michaelbluejay.com/electricity/laundry.html
      As for paper, there is no requirement to wipe dry. But if you do, the amount used can be very small. Much smaller than when "wiping" to clean. Alternatively, there's drip-drying, or small dryer fans (which, obviously use a small amount of power).
      As for heating the bidet water, this is also not necessary. There are some devices that keep it warm, but they are low energy usage. And some people have no problem with it being cold. Also, it's nowhere near as much water, or kept as warm, as what would be used to do a load of laundry. There are also things like ambient warmers, which basically bring the water to room temperature (www.biffy.com/biffy-ambient-warmer.html#.UurvTvldWSo).
      Obviously, that's more cost. But when you start to sum up the relative costs and water usage, it's clear that bidets beat toilet paper. I'll grant that your method is better than toilet paper, but it's not clear to me that it's better than a bidet. And it does lack the benefits provided by a bidet, which include feeling more clean (which you do), comfort (hemorrhoid sufferers will rejoice), and, possibly most importantly, they are far more sanitary than any sort of wiping.
      For a very clean visit to the toilet (with no wiping), you could even skip handwashing. Even if you don't, say because you just feel icky being in a bathroom, you'll take comfort in knowing that far fewer of the surfaces in your bathroom have had harmful bacteria transmitted around them from all that wiping.

      theinsomniac4life "I can't imagine spraying 40 gallons of water at your rear end, or filling your toilet bowl with anything approaching a gallon. This is just plain wrong." seriously? are you assuming that she meant that ONE bidet usage would use as much as a laundry load? because i don't believe that's what she was saying at all. i believe the comparison is that in as many toilet uses as it takes to create an entire laundry load of cloth bum wipes, using a bidet will use that much water. the average person uses the toilet 6 times a day. times 4 family members, that's 24 toilet trips per day... 24 toilet trips, times 7 days is 168 toilet trips. average bidet water usage per use is 500 ml. that's two cups. let's redo some math then. that puts the water usage for a bidet at 24 gallons. modern top loading washing machines use around 35 gallons. modern HE washers use 15-25 depending on the load. so, you're looking at a tie, at best. (if you use paper or a cloth to dry off after using your bidet, then any advantage you may have had disappears completely.) if you'd rather use a bidet, that's great! they're awesome things. but don't try to shame people about using cloth wipes using crap numbers. pun intended.

    I know this comment is a few years late but I feel there is a much easier solution. You can find this device on Amazon and it's a hose with a sprayer that attaches to the bottom intake valve on your toilet. Basically it's a type of a bidet and cloth diaper sprayer and the pressure of the sprayer is strong enough you don't need to use much water. This type of cleansing is very much used in Europe. I love your vlog by the way and have learned so much from you.
