    Got to say definitely looks a lot nicer with the alloys, and good luck with the paint.

  • @BRED510

    You need to prise the roof gutter strips out to sort that rust properly. Prise them out from the boot end with the boot open.
    The rust starts from under those gutter strips. Plus you wouldn't have had to paint the aluminium gutter strips then either.
    Once you've sorted the rust in the gutters, fill them with dinitrol then push the gutter strips back in.

    • @furiousdriving

      Thanks, assumed they were fixed parts

    • @BRED510
      @BRED510 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @furiousdriving no, get a flat screwdriver, wrap it in tape, open the boot and you'll see the end of the gutter strip, prise it up from there and gently pull it out moving from back to front, be careful as it bends easily. You might need to remove some of the paint you've applied as that's probably stuck them in.

    Matt, those roof gutter trims will be hiding the majority of the rust up there. The bits you’ve treated have crept up from in the channel- common on a few VWs of the era! Pop em off and get busy with the death wheel again👍

    Date code is on the outside of the tyre Matt. I have a knack for buying cars which come with the "original" spare. My Volvo S70 came with a Continental tyre which didn't look familiar, until I checked out the date code, which was late 1998... Oh well, it still holds air and is for emergency use anyway 😅

    That car keeps getting better. I like your idea of using some filler. Never had much luck with high fill primers. For painting small areas such as the rust on the doors I have had very good results using an air brush. Even with 2K clearcoat (slightly thinned) the results can be really good for areas of a few square inches.

    The wheels look great, you might end up wanting to respray all the wheels to make sure the colour is a match. Also if the budget allows for a few quid extra, get some VW wheel bolt covers, they're black plastic caps that go on each bolt and make it look more tidy and OEM.

  • @dantheblacksmith

    While you were under there the fuel tank strap looked like it was on its way to rustville... Might be worth a look or might just be gunky.

    Good find with the alloys Matt - they really lift the old girl up!
    I recall a trip in one of my previous cars (55 plate BMW Mini One D) to Newcastle to collect a set of five BMW Mini “Fin” alloys with tyres - they all went in the back of the car after some juggling and hugely improved the look and stance of the car when fitted.
    Keep up the good work!

    • @peterbroad1772
      @peterbroad1772 ปีที่แล้ว

      And for common sizes the difference can be as little £20 each to the good branded tyres. Tyres and brakes always get the best, no arguments. Like Matt I have a Rover P6. Classics get all sorts of crap fitted to them, M+S tyres etc. I found ContiPremiumContact 5s that fit (they are 70 rather than 80 profile) which is a seriously premium tyre. And they actually cost less than most of the garbage in this size with an H rating.

    The alloys have totally transformed Beryl, know what you mean about mismatched tyres, my car has 4 different brand of tyres lol 😂 and these were fitted by the dealer that sold me the car..... I use them as my winter wheels. Summer wheels are my alloys and a decent brand of tyre.
    Might have to use that rust preventer, is there a link for it ? I need to do the inside of the door in the Cactus (common problem and a recall issue if you have a full Citroen service history and paint check) which mine does not have!

    Things you should never cheap out on: brake components and tires. Your brakes are good, but you should invest in four new tires. You should never compromise on safety. You can buy midrange level tires that will do the work perfectly and have great performance for the price. Example Toyo, Uniroyal, Kumho, Nexen and other know midrange brands will be more than enough. Then you will be safe when driving the car and you can sleep calmly at night. Especially when you sell the car to the next owner. You will know that the car was safe when you handed it over.

  • @Uni_Iris_1
    @Uni_Iris_1 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    For future reference, 2 things.
    1. The age of the tyre is usually on the outside of the tyre as part of the DOT code (the exceptions I have seen are on accelera tyres and rotational tyres)
    2. Generally speaking for the general public putting new tyres on the rear axle is better as it promotes understeer which is easier to control. If new tyres are mounted on the front you're going to loose the back end before the front.
    Hopes this helps someone

    • @peterbroad1772
      @peterbroad1772 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've lost count of the times people have told me you put the good tyres on the driven axle (which is obviously right for a RWD car) or "where the steering is" which is always wrong.

    • @GoldenCroc
      @GoldenCroc ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@peterbroad1772 Depends, really. No answer that fits all drivers and condition, so dont know how you can say "where steering is, is always wrong"?
      Personally I prefer the best tires always in the front, for a multitude of reasons. Even on RWD cars. Best tires *always* in the rear seems like a somewhat outdated historical holdover for a reasonable driver in a modern car, if you ask me.

    • @GoldenCroc
      @GoldenCroc ปีที่แล้ว

      You are not necessarily going to loose the rear before the front, just because the reat got worse tires, it depends on a whole slew of factors. Its hard to say categorically which is best, almost impossible in fact.

    Lo Matt, Car lookn good. Question for you. Changing over wheels to Alloys does it invalidate your insurance? No i havn't lost the plot. My son had a wee bump on his car 2 years ago. Engineer came to check and look at the damage. Noted his car had alloy wheels and said they were not stock from the factory. His car was over 15 years old and the alloys were on the car when purchased. Apparently when you are declaring that the has not been modified this is one of the things they can get you with. My son pleaded the 5th amendment and the engineer let him off with it. Worth Knowing.👍

    You need to stop touching areas that are primed..... You're transferring sweat/grease from your fingers which can affect the top coat adhesion when applied.

    All VWs use radius seat bolts for both steel wheels and alloy wheels, so you can use the same bolts for both.

    How about 3 new tyres either Bridgestone or Continetal throw the cheap one in the bin and keep the other good tyre as a spare. That way you have 4 of the same tyres on the car.

    My concerns are the rust on the roof and the doors. In my experience, that does not bode well. I have never seen either of that corrosion on a beetle. I wish you the best of luck with your sale, but unfortunately they are an unloved car. I hope you prove me wrong.

    It would have been better to rather have removed all of the used & mismatched tyres (all with different date codes, tread depth & dubious condition) from the alloys, had them refurbished & only then fitted a matching set of 4 brand-new tyres of the same make & appropriate size size to them (some cars have different sizes specified for the front & rear sets), as well as getting the wheel balancing done & tracking alignment checked & re-adjusted - this would make it MoT legal & also provide for a safer & much more comfortable driving experience.
    The two items you should NEVER neglect or cut corners with (literally, figuratively or financially) are tyres & brake components, as these are both essential driving, steering & handling components that ensure your safety on the road, especially when you are confronted with an emergency situation & have to take sudden evasive action to prevent an imminent collision or accident.

      While what you say is common sense, there is no requirement in the MOT to have your wheels balanced or tyres of the same brand
