Beryls new owner will be chuffed to bits with her! She looks amazing! And a credit to your hard work in bringing her to this new level of finish. I have a thing about new tyres too! I hate having mismatched tyres and always swap mine in pairs. Tyres are as important as good brakes and airbags. Safety first, every time. Best wishes from Wirral, as ever.
Tyres, wheel alignment, wheel balancing, toe in angles….they all make a massive difference. Those Falcon tyres…I replaced the continentals with Falcons on my last car (polo)…on the front. They made strange noises a bit like a bearing failure. Took it back and moved them to the back and put new continentals on the front….problem solved. Never had a noise issue with tyres before. I only bought the Falcons because they were like £60 cheaper each tyre. They told me on returning a few other customers had reported the same.
Matt you are multi talented when it comes to painting and welding cars the VW beetle looks really good you mentioned aboit the laws concerning tyres l have had miss matched tyres on my vehicles for years and aslong as you have decent tread on them its ok and whrn l have done my yearky regestration inspections no problems as long as you have a decent amount of tread snd l have had a lot of second habd tyres and l took a csr for an inspection and the mechanic asked how good the spare was had a look at it and said ehen you get home change it for a tire that was on the car l never did
Those tyres will make a big difference. They will be peace of mind for the next owner and should command a better price. I've just fitted a pair of Continentals to the front of my Volvo XC90 to take care of the advisories on the MoT. It only failed on the right trackrod end so I changed both sides and got the front wheel alignment done when I had the tyres fitted.
My Volvo is a 1990 240DL estate. I have 9 wheels and tyres for it. 15 inch summer, 14 inch winter, and a 14 inch spare from the last set of summer tires. Surprisingly, we have always managed to wear all 4 in a set together. The joy of a balanced car, I guess. Arthur has certainly gone through a few sets of tyres in his 33 years and very nearly 400,000 miles.
I totally agree with you about new tyres - I put 4 new boots on my 1984 Mini City E and the damn thing steered as though it was on rails! The small leather-wrapped steering wheel helped.
I totally agree about NOT mixing tyres. Many years ago I bought a Subaru Impreza, and to my surprise it handled like a bag of shite! Unfortunately when I checked the tyres before buying, I only checked how much tread they all had. On further inspection I realised it had 3 Yokohama sporty tyres, and on the nearside front was some no name snow tyre! The car was a bit unpredictable on left hand turns, but downright dangerous on right hand turns.
Thought it was just me with tyres… my 2 year old C220d needed 4 new tyres after 20k miles. I Bridgestone to match the originals but they make a huge difference. After a puncture on my previous W212 E class I ended up with an emergency pair of Falkens on the front to replace the factory originals (no spare wheel so I had to take whatever was in stock). They were excellent and if they were worse than the OE fit tyres, I didn’t notice!
Sandpaper? Glasspaper for wood or carborundum paper always got my head chewed off for calling it the wrong name. What happened to Wet and Dry paper a very fine grit used wet left no scratches (the water washed away the dust and lubricated) and just needed a light cut (T Cut) after before a polish by hand and using a Beeswax polish (bloody hard work). A Coach Finisher told me that one takes off almost as much paint as applied so the finish builds after many coats. He was used to Coach Enamel applied by brush and would take over two weeks to do a vehicle from primer to a mirror finish at the end. It took 24 hrs to dry between coats. No free multi storey car park nearby then? Very handy for washing and polishing when raining or snowing. Back then they often had a water tap but I didn't use the fire hose reel as turning on would often set the alarm off (learnt by others mistakes). If the Fire Brigade turned up and still there you'd get a bill for the false call out. Ouch.
The paintwork looks great, well done Matt, you’ve really transformed this little Beetle, I can fully understand why you are becoming attached to it, the cute factor is off the scale, I wouldn’t want to part with it either❤
My new set of Dunlops on the V70 transformed the car so you are completely right on that! All tyre tread patterns/brands have different grip rates and if they are mismatched then it does actually affect the handling and balance of any car! The Beetle is growing on me actually and yes the colour is brilliant! You did a great job on the Beetle, great video Matt.
Yes here in France you can’t mix tyres on the same axle, but you can have different types between front and rear. Falkens are apparently pretty good, but I’ve been putting Nexxens on my cars for the last few years. I put a pair of Michelins on the front of the 9-5 but I didn’t have the choice because it was an emergency. I’ll be interested to see if they last longer than the Nexxens I have on the VW T4. Looking forward to seeing what comes next! Saab 9-5 Aero ? Mazda MX5 ?
I had two cheap tyres on a BMW E39. I was convinced I had wheel bearing problems, even got it checked twice. I put four new tyres on, what a difference. Really important item. Buy half decent ones.
I had a set of four Uniroyal RainSport 5s fitted to my 2006 V70 at the weekend in preparation for the potential bad weather this week, and they've transformed how it looks and drives :)
I hope the residue from the ceramic wash doesn't affect the painting of the passenger door. It's a b****r to get off. Do you use the Kent Paint Centre at Sandling? Materials are probably cheaper than Halfords and it's just as easy to get to. Opening hours do have to be taken into account if it's an emergency.
One of the nicest cars of that era out there. Three predictions once you sell it. One, you'll miss it. Two, you'll smile whenever you see another one. Three, you'll have another one - one day.
Just had new Goodyears and tracking on my Accord today. It does feel better with new rubber. The VW is looking good. Pity its gone so fast, could have got a video or two more out of it.
We will miss Beryl we have a 2013 Beetle 2.5 gas with 5 speed it’s great to drive and it fits nicely in Boston parking garages surprise not all garages are anywhere near the same size.
Completely agree with you on so many things Matt! Yes that is a lovely colour on the beetle! Also I Don't like doing anything in the rain! Tea and biscuits is a much better idea!🙂
OK I'll admit that my initial negative response to the beetle has diminished with every bit of work done - looking very respectable for its age and miles now. Good rattle can skills Matt. Probably for the best sticking to oem wheels rather then aftermarket as that can limit the target market when selling...though as you've already found beryl a home that's null and void! *remember tyres can be different makes and models across axles but must be same size across the axles (eg space saver spare fitted would fail mot) and can't mix radial and cross ply either.
Another great video Matt, you've done Beryl proud. Couldn't agree more on tyres, you remember my silver XJ40, it handled terribly when I got it thanks to 18 year old cracked tyres. A set of Falkens transformed it. No longer did I have to hang on to the steering wheel for Dear life!
Really love that Beetle much nicer than the new Mini because they stay faithful to the original and dont have the messy interior of the Mini range and bad ride
At the end I thought you were going to say the car had been DA polished. Looks great and envious of the new owner. The new Beetle launched just as I was buying a Golf, I would have bought one but I needed 5 doors.
18:00 that BMW in the background looks like bad times have befallen it... the Beetle looks good - paint colour looks not dissimilar to my old E34's Orient Blue. Someone will be getting a nice car there, Matt.
I always liked the look of them and think they look nice. The problem is that they were rubbish and repair costs would quickly mount so most folks just junked them because they were not worth spit after a couple of years. There used to be lots of them rolling around the USA but now most that are left are very ratty looking. i wonder if anybody has swapped a Honda engine and trans in one to make it reliable.

You should probably need to worship her, purposefully rattle drawers and complain every day to retrieve the missing cap. 🙃 I have Falken tyres on the V70, they're very supple and score very high in tyre tests, good choice for the Beetle!
