    The game death was sadder. No one knew he died, but he gave up his life anyway because it was the right thing to do.

      It was so unnoticed that Eggman still fondly remembered Gamma to the extent of modeling at least three further robots after him (Omega, Chaos Gamma, Gamma Robot from SA2)

      ***** Moral of the story: Don't make a 3D brawler game on a system that clearly isn't designed for it.
      It did give us the Emerl design though. So it wasn't all bad.

    You know what's even more sad than these two endings? From what I've read online in the original ending Gamma was suppose to shoot himself but Sega thought that was too dark.

      That's insane, there are limitless ways for them to go about that. Thinking it's too dark is nuts. When I was younger I used to think it would have been better for the scene to end with Gamma destroying Beta and he exclaims: Mission Accomplished, E-101 Beta, E-103 Delta, E-104 Epsilon, E-105 Zeta. Rescue complete. Only Gamma remain.
      Then he initiates a self destruct and counts it down as the birds fly away from the Egg Carrier.
      The way the ending went down almost felt as if Beta beat you in the end. The suicide of Gamma would have been poetic

    A lifeless video game character emotes more by not talking than a fully animated series ._. E-102 Gamma is my hero. I cried when I first played through Sonic Adventure, his death was tragic to me.

    even sadder when you realize that when amy saw the flickies together, she had no idea the gamma died to reunite them

  • @Sirhc7000
    @Sirhc7000 4 ปีที่แล้ว +109

    For some reason this feels way more emotional in the game to me. Maybe it’s the nostalgia talking but the musical sting of the sad, jazzy version of his theme when he explodes hits me.

    • @smashkiller64
      @smashkiller64 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Well also in the game Gamma realized he was going to have to kill himself to free the animal inside!
      So with the film noir limited dialog and camera work, his mission was personal and kept very internal.
      Especially for a person who was just understanding feelings and emotions.
      So his death was something he knew was inevitable, but with his new understanding of life he wanted justice, but it meant he was going miss-out on it and life!
      And in the end he came to terms and accepted it.
      (Also fun fact, if we’re using the pre 06 timeline, Gamma is taller than Omega!)

    • @gogotsuu
      @gogotsuu 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      First death hits really hard. Hearing his theme play after that adventure you had with the character as you see him walk away from the explosion, later seeing him have memories of the birds life and he collapses and explodes as the sad version of his theme plays. Always hit super hard

    • @gogotsuu
      @gogotsuu 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sonic X version though isnt sad at all, more funny actually since it happens really fast and Gamma says "oh shoot" after killing beta then he just dies saying mission complete

    • @gogotsuu
      @gogotsuu 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      the way he died made him feel like a really minor character too in sonic x which hurts more than his death in it

    • @neo-warkid4edwards222
      @neo-warkid4edwards222 ปีที่แล้ว

      I prefer the game as well, because of the fact that NO ONE was there to witness his last moments, and not even Amy will know of the sacrifice Gamma made, nor the true cost of her mission to reunite Birdie with his family.
      it makes Amy's last words to Gamma so heartbreaking, promising that they'd meet again, but that it wouldn't come to pass.
      though in Super Sonic's Story, they did meet again in a way, since Gamma's Flicky accompanies Amy as she gives one of the Chaos Emeralds to Sonic, meaning Gamma is with her in spirit.

  • @jeremyknight9980
    @jeremyknight9980 2 ปีที่แล้ว +62

    I do like that in the Sonic X version Amy was there and saw what happened to Gamma. In the game she didn't know because she was fighting Zero and never thought about Gamma again.

    • @stunnastream11
      @stunnastream11 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Technically, the fight with Beta Mk ll takes place before Zero's fight with Amy since they're both on the same area of the Egg Carrier. But I do agree with your overall opinion.

    SA because the dialogue before Gamma's death in X doesn't sound sad at all. The only remotely sad part about the X one is that Amy says "We're going to be friends from now on."

  • @Kirbychu1
    @Kirbychu1 10 ปีที่แล้ว +55

    I'd say the game version. The music really sets the tone, and I like how there isn't any dialogue whatsoever. It's strange, there are no words, so the player has nothing to go by but the actions and feelings...of these deadpan robots. Yet the result still ends up being very touching.
    The Sonic X version also tried to make things seem happier by saying Gamma and Beta were the birds all along, while it's left ambiguous in the game. If Gamma wasn't the bird but the robot itself, that makes things a lot sadder when he dies because he's not being set free. He's done. Game over. It also makes his decision to "save" his brothers more complex and his death a touching sacrifice.

    • @vohloo9797
      @vohloo9797 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I personally like to believe that he started out as a robot programmed to only do the task that he was assigned. But through out his story he encounters events and people that help him gain information that he stores in his memory thatand help shape his view on him self and Eggman. Resulting in him rebelling against his creator and changing his mission to what he believes is the correct thing to do.
      And like you said it makes it even more tragic knowning that he was doing a selfless act of freeing the creatures trapped in the other robots and himself.

  • @onurb511

    In my opinion, in Sonic X they focus too much on the birds reunion than on Gamma's death itself, thus making it way less sad than in the game.
    Every time I watch Gamma's death on Sonic Adventure it makes me cry IRL

  • @JulioSpiderWeb
    @JulioSpiderWeb 9 ปีที่แล้ว +35

    The anime treats Gamma and the pink flicky as two separate entities, while in the game Gamme itself has flashes of the little blue flicky who tags along Amy through the story. There's no sadness in the anime at all.

    • @Desiree_610
      @Desiree_610 9 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      That's why I liked the anime a little. Amy treats Gamma and The pink Flicky different. I wish they had a last moment like this in the game but better. She's happy for the 3 Flicky but crys for a robot for doing good.
      But the original Sonic Adventure makes me cry not the anime version.

    • @Desiree_610
      @Desiree_610 9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    One detail I often see overlooked is how, immediately after Beta delivers the finishing blow on Gamma, *Gamma's theme starts playing.*
    As if, despite his mission requiring his self-sacrifice, Gamma is trying to convince himself that he's fine and that he's not about to die. Even though he's a robot, he still fears death in a very human way.

  • @kunlesanders
    @kunlesanders 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    *E-123 Omega:* I couldn't even beat Gamma or Beta.
    And that's the reason why E-123 Omega never fought them. Because he was locked away in Dr. Eggman's secret base for too long.

    I wish Sonic wasn't forced to be good with kids. The Sonic world is pretty dark half the time and the "kid friendly content" just kill it.
    Sonic X was awful and garbage in comparison to SA.
    I always pretended Gamma killed himself in SA just because that's obviously how the story was leaning. I wasn't that pathetic of a kid who couldn't deal with death in media.

    • @Chaofanatic
      @Chaofanatic 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      300-I.Q. Prower Ok, I will. Cosmo's death was boring cause I honestly didn't care about her, also the generally poor animation did not help matters.
      Emerl's death was nothing more than text and still character portraits, I still like Emerl though cause he's a sweet-ass robot.
      E-102's death is probably the worst offender since it's clear that they had an idea and a direction that they wanted to go, but the poor graphics and terrible method of cutscene animation end up taking a lot away from it. The anime does not fare much better since it wasn't exactly up to spec in terms of animation either. I mean the entire final battle is just stills of Gamma and Beta sliding across swishy Egg Carrier renders before they die in the most anti-climactic explosions possible.
      Anyway, I probably shouldn't have replied to this at all. I mean I'm still doing it anyway mostly just to see what happens, but whatever!

    I actually can't blame you. Though I like Omega more, Gamma was certainly a deeper character. But maybe Omega was needed. There are lots of characters that would sacrifice themselves for the others, but not many uncaring and almost deathless ones. In this respect, Omega surpasses Shadow, Eggman, and maybe even Metal Sonic. Still, Gamma has more in surface than Omega in depth.

    I dunno, the game is okay, the silence kills it by making it awkward, where it could've benefitted from having gammas character more diversified by showing him actually having the internal conflict instead of not showing and leaving the player slightly confused. The anime only sucks because there's too much emphasis on talking, the scene where they both die isn't as amazing as the game's scene, and it just moves too fast all around to leave an emotional impact.
    If they wanted the scenes to stand out, they should flesh out Gamma more than just saying he had an internal change just by looking at the bird's pendant in the game, and went rogue in the process. The anime could as do it better if they fleshed out the scene by making the fight as unique as it was in the game, drawing out the time for the battle to take place, then make a very nice flashy death scene instead of making beta and gamma's deaths look like trash fires.

      While Gamma's original files are lost, technically his old parts are confirmed to have been recovered by Robotnik, as in Sonic Battle, a character named Chaos Gamma appears, and through dialogue in the game, it's implied he uses parts from the original Gamma's wreckage. However, besides using some of his salvaged parts, he is not the same character ("No such code name in memory. I am not Gamma.").

    Gamma's strory was so emotional and thought provoking that dialougue and explaination would only get in the way.

    I agree with you on everything, apart from the 'that's not what the critics would say'. Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 are two of the highest critically acclaimed games of all time, yet they have almost no storyline, or at least an extremely simple one with no plot twists or character development.
    But I do think that it's a better experience when games have a compelling storyline, I agree with Jetz72 that they don't NEED them to be fun though.

    Seeing that HUGE explosion after reading @castineyra13's comment made me realize how sad that scene was. ;( It means a lot more given Gamma's character and storyline than I ever thought it did while playing the game several years ago.

    Funny how the one where they don't say anything says more than the one where they actualy talk. I'd forgotten all about this guy, he was my favret charicter in that game, nice little nostalgia trip, thanks.

    SA wins here. Its the combination of watching the fatally wounded Gamma limp around, the large yet slow and silent explosion, the sudden music stop leading to that sad arrangment of his theme, and the fact that in the end, no one was around to even mourn him (with Gamma effectively dying alone).
    In Sonic X, he just fell over and exploded shortly afterwards, and while its a nice touch that someone was there to see Gamma's fate, it does take away from the sadness. I like it though.

    Now that I look at it, it's hardly twice Gamma's size, but it looks wider as well. Not to mention that Beta Mark ll was floating that gave him an unfair advantage against land-based robots.

    I think sonic adventure won! and, speaking of "death" I thought of Steve Broadie, the actor for e102 gamma who died of cancer in 2001, it's sad to hear he left. he shall be remembered.

    I obviously the sonic X version because i remember amy told E 102 Gamma that they wold be friends and she saw him die right in front of her (plus the game is confusing because gamma comes back in mission mode because mission mode is like a sequel of missions of the character you play as)

    the saddest thing is that in the game no one will ever know of his struggle and sacrficice. He went solo against every one of his former allies and sacrificed himself with no one to witness anything.

    In adventure Gamma to me is a Robot created for destruction and the evil doings of eggman. But that robot was taught feelings and realized he had to save his friends from being stuck in one place alone forever. That robot then after he "saved" Beta was terminated but Gamma I think knew that what had to happen to release the birds to combine them as a family again. DX Was sadder. The fact that no words told the story in the end really moved me.

    Even the Japanese voices of the robots are better then the English Dubbed voices in the show. I still enjoy the show, but perhaps FUNimation should have taken over the English dubbing at least.

    No she was talking about the robots, at 4:05 the two are holding hands and SA2 had a sadder death, Gamma was a great character. He had to die for the birds to be reunited again. :'(

    DX Ver. Since you playing as Gamma and experience his story yourself and what his goal is. The last boss battle, its awesome and a really epic fight. When you watch that last cutscene as Gamma falls over and a sad rendition of his theme plays over a slow building explosion, you feel like you really lost a friend cause you've been with this character and really connect with him. But it leaves on happy note as a family is reunited showing that Gamma's efforts wasn't for nothing.

    EXACTLY! But lets face it, if it were the other way around we would think the exact same thing of gamma and want shadow back. Plus they actually did bring back gamma one final time in sonic battle. It wasn't the exact same model and didn't have such a wonderful personality like gamma had, but it was gamma.

    I'd say the DX version is sadder because the game portrayed as Gamma scarificing himself not because he had too but because he wanted to free the trapped flicky and it was the only way. In sonic X Gamma seems underdeveloped as a character that self destructs simply because it was the logical final step in completing his mission.

    Sa, the fact that you play as him you really get more attached and see things from his point of view more. the fact he kills his relatives even though he doesn't want too and dieing so the bird can be with the rest of it's family show that even though he was a robot, he had a heart.

  • @andrewolges9450
    @andrewolges9450 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    The game was far more emotional, but to give credit where credit is due, Gamma's final line in Sonic X does give a more instantaneous impact. Gamma is, even after realizing Eggman was the enemy, a soldier through and through. Completing his mission was the most important thing for him, and to utter the phrase "mission complete" right before going offline... Too bad the rest of the scene following ruins what could have been the perfect chance to recreate such an emotional moment.

  • @OrinokawaMizuki
    @OrinokawaMizuki 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Game's Gamma and Beta are exoskeletons of the Flickies. However in the TV series version they felt like separate individuals. So the TV version is sadder because they both 'died'.
    The game version though is much more sentimental, dramatic, emotional, and romantic. Since that it's about the relationship between the two Flickies.
    While the TV series version is about Gamma's completing its mission and then destroys itself. It's also as chatty and lecturing as a Gundam episode.

    @metaXzero Did you know originally sega intended Gamma to shoot himself in the head rather than get fatally wounded by Beta, however it was considered too violent for a family game.

  •  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    what's really ironic about that is in the beta plans for SA, gamma was actually going to commit suicide by shooting himself with the arm cannon at the end, but then the developers thought it was too shocking for the game
