- Dive into the history of the life-saving procedure of blood transfusions and how it has evolved since the 17th century.
--
In 1881, doctor William Halsted rushed to help his sister Minnie, who was hemorrhaging after childbirth. He quickly inserted a needle into his arm, withdrew his own blood, and transferred it to her. After a few uncertain minutes, she began to recover. What made this blood transfusion successful? Bill Schutt explains the history of the life-saving procedure.

We are the most fortunate generation in the history of mankind upto this point, for being able to gain so much knowledge about different fields just from our homes. Just imagine how much our ancestors struggled to gain knowledge. Just getting access to few books itself was very difficult.
dragon thunder NO OFFENCE but no one likes to study. If it was me because of this punishing education system I have to mug up everything and not something which I want to learn

A blood transfusion saved my life when I started hemorrhaging after giving birth! Thanks to others I was able to raise my now 13 yr old daughter and have 2 more children. Please donate if you're able. I donate at every chance now because without that transfusion, I wouldn't be alive today! You really are saving lives! I'm also a nurse so I often think of all the lives others helped me save just by donating. I'm a huge advocate of blood and plasma donation and never miss the opportunity to let people know how important blood transfusions are. Sorry but I get emotional thinking about how people I'll never meet saved my life and made it possible for me to save others. It's a beautiful gift!
Be thankful for that Gift We Humans are beings which can't function without each others help . Its our religion or ideology which keeps us joint together But As a single individual I prefer religion as it organizes human around a single entity the only problem is founding that true religion out of thousands of its fabrications but anyways we must be grateful to God
My country restrictions just add 1 more months this year im only able donate once per 3 months 😑
huh i thought people who received blood transfusions cannot give blood but guess this is wrong
@@Fury-hz1my It depends upon person. Blood transfusions are done to people who are lacking it if the body is incapable of producing more blood then you can't donate your blood because you can't function without full blood supply but for those who suffered a temporary blood shortage when they are recovered and their bodies are again able to create surplus of blood then they can again donate blood
Wish I could donate when I am older,I have low hemoglobin
Just how brave people in the past tried to transfusion a sheep blood in their body...
Or desperate
I suspect the man who was experimented on, due to his mental illness, did not consent.
The idea to do transfusion sheep blood to human itself were really outstanding. Just imagine from what kind of inspiration the person himself got an idea to transfer livestock's blood to human.
They probably thought: it's all blood. They're mammals, we're mammals.. 😁
I'm surprised it even work the first time. Different mammals have their own unique sets of blood type. They don't even have ABO groups like we do, let alone being able to match the correct blood type.

On 2:42, although it is said that both are of the same type, the cards show “A” and “B”, respectively.
I believe they mean "sample A" and "sample B", as it says blood A and not type A in the end of that segment. Although I can see how that may cause confusion.
Yes..bro..it refers to sample type and not the blood group
Hello there! The A & B in that segment are referring to blood sample A and blood sample B, not their types! Hope this helps 😊
Hey guys, thanks for the responses and sorry for the misinterpretation. 😊
@@gsf02 I was a bit confused too, since there are also blood types A and B. It would be more clear if it says 'Sample'.
The use of yellow in all of the blood colours is clever - it signifies the blood plasma - nice detail TED!

I am an active blood donor from Finland. And I am proud about it. We don't recive any payments from it. Though there is no need for it anyway. Knowing that your donated blood can help three people in need, makes you very happy. And every new donor gets warm welcome.
I'm a transfusion dependent Thalassemic person. How important blood donation and Transfusion is I have learned from very beginning of my life. Thanks who have invented it and immense thanks to the blood donors 🤗
Didn't knew the history behind blood transfusion until now. Thanks ted ed!
I recently donated blood earlier this year. It's a surreal experience getting a text from the company that drew your blood telling you that your blood is being used in a transfusion :)
that neat i give blood but the company i use does not give out texts

2:40 there is a mistake. The letters shod have been A and A, not A and B.
beautiful video as always, though small mistake at 2:40 showing the same blood type as A and B
A and B are used to represent the donor's and recipient's blood cells
I hope I clarified it for you :)
The A and B are not the blood group but variables used to denote each of them

hi jule. btw wobba wobba
I mean if by basics you mean you stick the liquid from one human to another than yeah you probably got the basics.
As always, this is so well crafted. Just a remark : there is a mistake at 2:40 where the two blood types are A & B. They are supposed to be identical, so A & A. Keep up the good work :)
They mean sample A and sample B
Hey there Mathieu! The A & B in that segment are referring to blood sample A and blood sample B, not their types! 😃
Mathieu Revillion, it’s blood type AB, but I’d you had A, and was given type B, it would’ve clot anyway.
I thought the same thing as well
