By saying no. Women did have control over their lives and did reject men who were unsuitable. Where you get this idea that they didn't comes from Hollywood.

It was also a good way for a noble family to educate their daughters in foreign courts. They would be sent to courts around Europe and learn manners, court protocol, learn new languages and maybe secure an advantageous marriage.

Some royals forge strong relationships with their ladies-in-waiting. For example, Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother count the likes of Ruth, Baroness Fermoy and Cynthia, Countess Spencer as her ladies-in-waiting. It was even said that The Queen Mother plotted with Lady Fermoy to marry her grandson Charles to her friend's granddaughter Diana. As for Diana, her ladies-in-waiting included her childhood friend Alexandra Loyd - the daughter of Sir Julian St. John Loyd and granddaughter of the Earl of Midleton and her own sister The Lady Sarah McCorquodale. It was said that Diana initially wanted her good friend and fourth cousin Sarah Ferguson as her Lady-in-Waiting but it was vetoed by the palace saying that Sarah though part of the gentry, was not "posh" enough.
Ladies in waiting were often treated as property of the KING he paid their expenses & he expected them to be available. They could be mistress of the king without him having to set up another household. Also if a woman had not married by a certain age, they were classed as old maids, and the only positions open to them were Companion or Lady in Waiting or Governess to upper crust children, which was considered to be a servant.
That's not true at all. Ladies-in-waitings to a royal woman were themselwes rich aristocratic noblewomen. The king certainly could not expect them to be available. Of course sometimes a royal mistress beguin her career while originally a lady-in-waiting, but that's a different matter: a lady-in-waiting could sometimes become a royal mistress, but a lady-in-waiting was not the same thing as a royal mistress. You confuse a lady-in-waiting with a lady's companion, which was a middle class woman employed by an upper class woman, not an upper class woman employed by a royal woman.
Not every lady in waiting were working for the Kindgom. They will be under the protection of the family they work for, which by default raise the honor and prestige of the lady in waiting's family and can also put their family as ally of the family the lady will work for. Ladies in waiting, will work for any family of higher or equal prestige that will be looking for it. A marquess will look up for a lady in waiting for his daughter and he will look for ladies family around and under the same rank as him. Baron can mostly look only for other baron rank family or new noble people who gain low rank lord lady title. The King and Queen are not the only people who can ladies in waiting
It was also a finishing school for young women. A good queen took care of her youngest ladies (who could be as young as 12 or 13) as a foster mother. She would get them a tutor if she found them deficient in some subject or found them to be clever and well-suited for more advanced learning (which could make them a better match). Prior to court, young girls learned to dance from instructors, but didn't often have a lot of practice dancing in large groups, so they would have practice dances in the queen's chambers with the other ladies. They would also learn the art of flirting and courtly love by both receiving advice directly and by watching other women in action. The same was true of learning about politics and social networking. The Goodman of Paris, in 1395, told his young wife to always take care to sleep with one of her young companions or the matron in charge of the household whenever he was away so that she always had an alibi if anyone accused her of committing adultery. (It was also warmer to share a bed back when there was no central heating.) He also told her that if she received a letter from any man who was not in her immediate family, she should feign that she couldn't read this strange handwriting and have one of her ladies read it aloud. That would also protect her from any accusations that she was receiving secret love letters. (His letters, on the other hand, should always be read in private so that he could share confidential information with her.)
The Empress Eugenie always chose the prettiest ladies she could find, because, being a noted beauty by the standards of her own time, she knew none of them would outshine her.
This is actually a profession I wouldn't mind having if time travel was possible. It would basically mean that I would be a noblewoman who would be trusted to take care of a woman of high position, and with a lot of pressure. They were no more slaves to than modern women who also try to satisfy their employers. Sure, there were risks in the job, but also opportunities. Like in all jobs in all times.
An unmarried or widower noble woman without enough dowry or pension to attract suitable husbands would be lucky to get a position as a lady in waiting. Other option would be a governess, which was pretty horrible way of surviving.
Men had their own titles, for royalty it was Dukes and the like. They had servents to do most of the necessities. Of course for lower ranking gentry/poorer gentry, the ladies in waiting were about the same as grooms for men.

Can you have Ladies in Waiting in a royal Court say if there was no Queen (say she had died) and the king was too old and frail to remarry and if the Princess was either dead or live elsewhere with her husband?
not being proper to walk in public alone made me wonder if muslim cultures have a similar job/role (well, for the rich...i can't imagine being able to afford paying someone to hang out with me on the chance i might have to go out in public. ohh i wonder if there could be a hybrid with technology and have some kind of uber-lady-in-waiting service so you only pay for when you really need them and the closest respectable lady could pop over escort you and act like it's fun).
Doubt it. For some Muslim cultures, unmarried ladies have to be specifically escorted by a man. Another women wouldn't matter as they would still need a guy to escort them
No. There's no equivalent. Muslim women are free to move around as they choose, they just cannot be "behind closed doors" alone with a man. For example, a room, house, hotel room etc.
I think you what you mean specifically middle east culture. Because it is actually better not to be alone with other people, men or women in Islam. Muslim in southeast Asian are more free to walk alone because of the culture
Honestly, in modern times women muslims are allowed to walk anywhere alone. We're not really restricted anymore (as far as I know, in old muslim communities women were allowed to go outside with other women, I know muslims are known to be strict but they're not as strict as some potrays but thats a whole can of worms for another time) but some countries do still have a law (ie. Saudi Arabia) saying that an unmarried woman have to go with their male mahram (a member of the family ex. Father, brother, cousin) or another woman companion if they're going outside their homes. Most Middle Eastern countries are more chill, just like any western countries are. I've been to Qatar where a lot of girls go to places by themselves or just with their friends. This whole strictness also depends on your upbringing, I've known a few Arabian, Indonesian and Malay friends whose families are so protective because they didn't want anything to happen to their daughters that my friends aren't allowed to go anywhere without someone else accompanying them. Personally, I like going out with other people because I just feel much more safer that way and I think a lot of other muslim women feel the same on that regard. I can go to places by myself too when I want to but I just feel safer with someone else there especially in a foreign place.
