This is one of my favorite flamenco songs of all time. I had the privilege of studying with Juan Serrano at Fresno State for a year or so, an honor I will never forget.

My friend Donna and I saw him perform at Fresno City College in the early 80s. I was not familiar with him or his music until Donna "clued me in" & I was of course blown away !!

Mr. Serrano you don't remember me, but you came to Toronto early 60,s and we were playing guitar at the 71 cafe , you were the best person then and never change, you still a kind person that likes to help others, so for that I thank you for knowing you for so many years.

Don Serrano is the most charismatic and genuine person I ever encountered in flamenco. And his playing is surely very original and has its own quality. He will be a chapter on its own in the history of 20th century's flamenco.

I worked with Juan the years he was in Fresno. This is one of my favorites. His performance of this song is both spellbinding and jaw-dropping. I never get tired of hearing him play this live.

Truly magnificent. It is so true that the granainas have alot of classical guitar like in them, Juan sure exposes that here. Wonderful granaina composed by Juan. One of the true immortals of the flamenco guitar world. I could never say enough for Juan. You never get over a childhood hero. Teddy.

you won't find a better version of this song. I like it much better then Habichuelas version (Nino Ricardo comes in 2nd)......and Forget Sabicas, Paco De Lucia, or Manolo Franco or probably whoever else you can think of. This is the way granaina should be played. Juan plays real songs, not endless solos to himself that have no structure. Listening to juan makes sense to anyone, a truly amazing composer. His pieces just flow making you stay to the end. So many different sounds, keeping true to tradition, which many people don't realize is influenced from all over the ancient world.... And his technique is unmatched imo. Just the first couple chords he strokes alone have an amazing tight sound. A True Master and Sensei with Disciples everyhwere. SALUTE!

Its like going back in a time machine, Juan, and Nino Ricardo are my fav versions. They play these songs like men, like they would of had to back in the days so they didn't get beat up ending on too many pretty chords, at the same time they flap their hair around, and sounding like a wussy haha... Juan has so many styles, and he covers every aspect of this song, hes like a historian with his guitar.

Hi Massimo, in my early flamenco-learning days I had Juan's first album. The cover showed him with a spruce and cypress Ramirez, like Sabicas used in the early 60's. Here he is playing what looks like a cedar and rosewood Ramirez similar to what Manolo Sanlucar used to play. Whether it's a true flamenco negra or, instead, built on a classical body I'm not sure, but the shallow headstock angle suggests (to me) it may be more classical than flamenco. I've owned three Ramirez flamencos .... a '64 spruce, a '68 cedar and, at the moment, a '66 cedar.
As far as tone goes, the cedar-tops sound totally different to the spruce, and much much better, with an enchanting mid-range and sweet trebles. The '64 was good but lacked character. Juan's guitar (like Manolo's) has a fuller deeper bass sound than a typical Ramirez cypress flamenco, so I'm inclined to believe that they are both classical guitars that have been set up for flamenco playing. I would be interested to know if this is true. Somebody out there kwows for sure. I hope this helps.

Guess, that just has never been Juans' style. If you look at the position of sitting for playing that Paco De Lucia did with his leg crossed over the other leg, Paco use to say this was cause he could reach the guitar better that way with his right arm. However Paco did not originate this playing sitting style, I think the brazilian guitarist Baden Powell was doing it before Paco. Juan here always has done his own thing. Juan came up with his own rasguedo which was and, is a more sophisticated one than most flamenco guitarists were doing back when. He started with the pointer finger, then the pinky finger, then the ring finger, than the middle finger then back up with the pointer finger again, which also gave you a fuller effect for a rasguedo. Juan also was the only flamenco guitarist using his pinky on his right hand for the arpeggios. Juan was also the first flamenco guitarist to earn a doctors' degree in music andm has not only been a great guitarist but, a great maestro along with Mario Escudero and, Paco Pena and, Manolo Sanlucar. A =gain a truly great granaina by Juan. One real technician. Juan was my real big flamenco guitar hero when I was a kid, I'll never forget him.
