- After a week of scooter incident recovery, we finally make it out the house again. On our way out of Chiang Mai, we spot a huge airplane--an Airbus330, specifically--on the side of the highway, in the middle of a parking lot. We find out it is one of Thailand's most unique and creative recreations--it's an airplane cafe and hotel (hotel coming soon!) This was the perfect break for us on the way to Chiang Dao.

If you go pass Chiang dao to chai prakan there is Japanese park with Japanese house made with wood it's like in Japan name hinoki land I think

Chiang Dao is a lovely spot! There are also some nice waterfalls and a hot spring just north toward the border.

On a serious note, depending on how long you're going to be in Thailand, you might want to invest in/rent a full face helmet. Like 70% of crashes, you hit your chin/face when you fall off the motorbike. Don't feel bad about your crash - it's a rite of passage for expats in Thailand. Five years ago I had a motorbike accident in Chiang Mai, bad concussion (in ICU for a night since I couldn't hold conversation), breaking my collar bone, 2nd rib and scapula, spent 7 nights in Chiang Mai Ram hospital and surgery to put a plate in my collar bone (only cost $6k after surgery, private room, ICU, MRIs, x-rays - which is a STEAL compared to US healthcare). I still ride motorbikes in SE Asia but very carefully and I buy the maximum insurance you can for both bike and myself. Don't ride in the rain or after dark. For long trips, I take a bus/plane/train/taxi. Oh and btw, your travel insurance may not cover you unless you have a motorcycle endorsement on driver's license back home and/or a driver's license for the local country. For example, you need a US motorcycle endorsement/license as an American to drive a motorcycle in Thailand with an International Driver's Permit. Shops will rent to you because they don't care - but the insurance won't cover you since it's illegal. Also, many travel insurance policies require you to buy the hazardous activities rider, even though that makes no sense equating bungee jumping with driving a bike, for coverage (READ THE FINE PRINT). A solution many expats who live in Thailand long term is to just get the Thai motorbike driver's license - which is not difficult - just bureaucracy (google it for blogs/videos of it).
this is really really helpful information--thank you for sharing your experience. it's definitely changed us. there's a sense of adventure and ease that come with riding motorbikes here, but also with a lot of caution! so glad we came out of it ok, sorry to hear you had such a rough accident!

That cafe was super cool. Airbus A330's are huge planes, as you saw first hand. It will be interesting to see what the hotel portion looks like later this year. Love the kitty at your Chiang Dao stop. I'm a big kitty fan too!!
