The sound is totally unique. No other smooth song like it. There is a lot of happening with the melodies and the singing. It's a complicated mesh of happy grooves with a sobering message.

SOME PEOPLE UNDERSTAND LYRICS AND THINK ABOUT JUST ONE VERSE !!!!! BUT IT'S WORDS ARE SO IMPORTANT. JUST LIKE SAYING I LOVE YOU OR I'm SORRY... BUT IT'S MORE IN THE WHY OR HOW..😊 LIKE IN THE THE XMAS JINGLE BELLS SONG.. NOBODY BARELY HEARS ( COME ON JINGLE HORSE PICK YOUR FEET)
THATS WHY THE MUSIC WAS SO GREAT 💥💥💥

@Cathy Moore Steeley Dan was not only popular with regular people. They were loved by many musicians and it was considered an honor if you ended up on a final cut of the album. They'd have dozens of guys/gals come in and play solos. Picking the one they thought worked best for the song.

Can’t go wrong with Michael McDonald! Michael collaborated with a lot of artists in his day including, Christopher Cross’ “Ride like the Wind”, Patti LaBelle’s “On my own”, Kenny Loggins’ “This is it”, Steely Dan’s “Peg” and even did the soundtrack song, “Sweet Freedom” on the movie “Running Scared” that starred Gregory Hines and Billy Crystal.

Written by Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins. Produced by Ted Templeman. In the same decade, he produced Van Halen. Released 1 year after What a Fool Believes.
Suggested songs where MM sang and/or wrote:.1 Christopher Cross and MM sing Ride Like the Wind (I can play this song over and over!) 2 MM and late James Ingram, RIP, sing Yah Mo Be There. 3 MM and Patti Labelle sing On My Own 4 Van Halen performs I'll Wait live in Montreal. (Written by them and MM) 5 Toto and MM perform I'll Be Over You.
What a Fool Believes won the Grammys for Original Song in 1980.🏆 This song also appeared in the TV 📺 comedy What's Happening, which was released 45 years ago 🎂
As a boy 👦 walking in my hometown San Francisco 🌉 , I heard this often. The Doobie Brothers is the most famous band from San Jose, CA. Some of my relatives saw them when they often played in San Jose State University.
    Great song 👍
The song with the same keys 🔑 you heard is Steal Away (From the Night) sung by Robbie Dupree. Written by him and Rick Chudacoff.

He never got credit for writing lyrics to I’ll Wait from Van Halen’s 1984 album. His name wasn’t written as one of the people who wrote lyrics for the song. I’m sure David Lee Roth had something to do with it. Ted Templeman and Roth wanted the song removed from the album, Eddie Van Halen liked the song and it obviously wasn’t removed. It was a hit and topped out at number 13 on the Billboard Charts. It’s the only single from the album that didn’t have a video recorded to be played on Mtv. Jump, Hot For Teacher and Panama all had videos. I guess Roth didn’t want to record a video. I think it’s the best song from 1984.

Mike McDonald was a phenomenon - his upper range was legendary. Steely Dan brought him in to sing backup because he could hit the high notes in full chest voice, not having to switch into head voice (falsetto). Put that together with his keyboard skills and songwriting, and it was like this little nuclear explosion. Just amazing.

I aways thought of this as more of class reunion song. Some dude thought he had a relationship with a girl back in HS.. And always thought she and he would someday meet again and the she would suddenly realize she loved him. And they would live happily ever after.
But the reality is, she barely remember him. She just thought of him as a nice guy she once knew and would never consider him for anything more.
But the dude just holds on to his fantasy of "someday".

Michael has one of the most borrowed voices in the music industry. From Christian, to Country to Mainstream music. Toto's I'll be over you to Robie Duke's Come Let Us Reason, to Christopher Cross, Steely Dan in the song Peg, the list goes on and on.

The drummer on this performance was a female who played jazz with icon Stan Getz in the 60s she was around 14.

These days you could easily hear this song (as GREAT as it is) getting piped in over the supermarket sound system or while you're at the dentist getting your teeth cleaned. That's just what happens over time. Guaranteed you've heard it dozens of times in the ether as you go about your life or even on the radio when you were a youngster. It's a huge and VERY WELL KNOWN song. You should listen to the studio version ... this is a very well recorded track and you're missing out sound-wise with this video version - wherever it came from. How about the fact that M.M. is singing lead WHILE banging out the main song riff on the keyboard!

The thing about these Yacht Rock (or soft/smooth rock) classics is they're made to be played on repeat, that's probably why they dominated radio back in the late '70s/early '80s, whereas with some other genres, just one listen will make you want to take a break from listening to the radio for a while...I love listening to other Yacht Rock classics like 'Somebody's Baby' by Jackson Browne and songs from some newer artists from Northern Beaches, Sydney, who are influenced by Yacht Rock like Sticky Fingers ('Gold Snafu') Angus and Julia Stone ('Chateau'), Ocean Alley ('Knees') and Lime Cordiale ('Addicted to The Sunshine')...Happy listening, guys! :)

We love your style! You don’t interrupt during the song like some other reactors! But your groovin and occasionally comment are spot on target! You are our “GO TO” ❤❤️😊😊

'But what a fool believes he sees, no wise man has the power to reason away.' Man this line has stuck with me all my life. It's damn near a life philosophy. I dunno if you ever read old comments, but MM famously sings background and is sampled in a lot of Steely Dan songs.

I first heard this song on the juke box in the rec hall at Camp Schwab on Okinawa in 1979. Takes me back.

I did one studio session with Michael M. (vocals on the song "Sweet Freedom") and he was: 1) the nicest guy, and 2) a seriously bad-ass singer/scatter who could come up with great improvisational sh|t on demand. Colleagues of mine who worked with him in studio more than I did (in the '80s and '90s) told me he was super down-to-earth and super unpretentious.

I think I'd offer the interpretation of the lyrics as this: "She had a place in his life, he never made her think twice" really means he was dreaming about her all the time but she never even noticed him...but what a fool believes, he sees I guess 😅

The sound is totally unique. No other smooth song like it. There is a lot of happening with the melodies and the singing. It's a complicated mesh of happy grooves with a sobering message.

Legend has it that McDonald had a Red Phone in his personal study; when it would go off, it would be a musical act requiring the smoothest r&b voice of the 70s and 80s. Steely Dan, Toto, Christopher Cross, Patti LaBelle, etc. Almost sang backup with Van Halen on their 1984 album. He and his bud Kenny Loggins recently toured together as the Badass Old Men group or something, lol
