Un spectacle magnifique! avec Christie à la direction, d'immenses interprètes dont Richard Croft que beaucoup ont découvert.... Un très grand moment :)
To olialto7... Just so you know, there is an old interview with David (I will try to find it again) where he talks about this point in his career (1996 is when this video is from). Lorraine Hunt (singing at the beginning here) helped David work on not scooping after this point...she really helped clean-up a lot of the things people complained about at the beginning of his career. I would recommend...
I find it so interesting that castrati (and now of course countertenors like Mr. Daniels himself) were made to be heroic roles, interesting how public taste in voice changes over time. I love Daniels singing though, his high notes are absolutely glorious. Search youtube for his "Venti Turbini" (add his name and you should get it), it's absolutely lovely!
Michael Hoffman it's because castrati sounded much more like super high tenors then counter-tenor. Think Pavarotti with tessitura and coloratura of Marilyn Horne.
I am very pleased that David Daniels has contributed so much to the world of Baroque opera and to the renewal of interest in the high male voice. Personally, however, I prefer those male singers who voices have greater focus and a more masculine timbre, which better differentiates from the female voices and better matches the described singing style of the Baroque castrati.
...that you listen to something of his from more recent times and let us know if you still feel the same way or not. He just put out a new CD called Bach: Sacred Arias and Cantatas. I believe that there are videos here on youtube from that disc. Let me know what you think...would love to know.
What a great pleasure to read Edithmead04 -- a listener who both understands the way her taste evolved and is excited about broadening her listening pleasue. Would that we all had that kind of curiosity and open-mindedness.
He does have a beautiful voice, but what bothers me is the way he uses it. He has these mannerisms which I find irritating, for example, the little 'scoops' between notes, and the over-covered lower register.

Perfection! Thank you Mr. Daniels.
I am liking this a lot! :-)

You think David Daniels is lacking in the masculine timbre?! Who would be a good example of what you like in a ct voice?
Sorry, I didn't get the second part of this message.
Oh, and find the one that is just a piece of music as the movie, the other is staged... differently to say the least, and isn't as good.
