Well, I finally got a hold of an #XperiaZ3! So many people were upset that I didn't look at it and therefore I couldn't list something as a top phone that I did not play with.
I honestly did not like the Z2. It has some irritating issues with battery life and overheating. So I intend to play with the Z3 and see if I like it.
I look forward to the Z4 coming out and hopefully the Z3 will help me gain some insight into where Sony still needs to improve.
Do any of you have any questions about this phone?

Battery life should not be an issue, I am amazed at the longevity of the Z3 compact.

Wow, TH-cam uploader is not sharing to Google+ anymore. Anyhow, here are MY top 5 favorite phones of 2014.
And NO, I did not miss any phones in my list. This video is MY personal favorites, not what one THINKS should be my favorite lol.
Maybe it would help everyone to know that I tend to like phones due to user experience, battery life, and of course whether I can buy the phone or not (I can think of several examples here like carrier availability, if it's mainstream or sold only in one country, or if one has to jump through a hoop or two to get permission to buy it).

Since many of you ask, no I do not like the G3 "personally" at all. I don't like the display calibration at all (images are low contrast and oversaturated) and the sharpening LG added really bothers my eyes. Also I tried using the G3 for video in France and the video bitrate is so low that I can see a ton of compression artifacts on any mildly detailed scene. That really made my temper boil. Also, the battery life for me was so poor unless I kept the brightness low or disabled a number of things. I took it out to take pictures and video and with just doing that, the phone was near dead after an hour. I also found that LG messed up with skin tones and it makes people look sallow and just sickly.
I do know that I can modify the phone. XDA has several threads on improving the nonsense issues such as sharpening and low video bitrate. The phone has some cool features but the issues with it hit me where it hurts.
As for OnePlus...just don't get me started. The only people who will care about it are those who cared to go out and buy it and get invites. If they get rid of the invite system, I might give a hoot.
And as for Sony stuff...Sony gave me whiplash with releasing the Z3 right after I bought the Z2. I didn't have the funds for both since I do buy just about all my phones I review. The Z2 had some irritating issues like unpredictable battery life and overheating when using the camera. I love Sony but I'm putting my money on the Z4. I can't rate the Z3 when I didn't review it. That's not fair.
I know I don't owe any justifications on my own opinions but since people are curious about my decisions I see no issue explaining more.
I do find it entertaining and hilarious that people get pouty over which phones "I" personally chose, as if it has anything to do with their own opinions. My personal choices are my personal choices. Live with it ;).

"Revolution"? And what would that be? One of the points of a revolution is to get a bunch of people to back it. Kinda hard to do that when those people can't even get their hands on one to know if it's worth it or not.

I really dig your reviews. My vision sucks so I don't share your passion for display/camera quality, but your logic and especially your willingness to listen to viewers perspectives are refreshing. Your follow-ups and comparisons really touch on what differentiates devices, and you cover pros and cons that matter objectively. Thank you for doing what you do.

  • @pjtruslow

hey Erica. you're great and I love your videos, but I think you should go back to filming in a lower framerate. high resolutions like 1440p or 2160p are great for clarity(although I only have a 1440p monitor) but the high framerate of your recent videos can be a bit distracting from the content.
not a big deal at all, just think you should consider going back to 30 or 24fps

    • @EricaGriffin
      @EricaGriffin  9 ปีที่แล้ว +16

you realize that 60fps is closer to what your eye perceives in reality than 30fps? I think you are just used to media standard and expect it but it should definitely not be distracting just by the simple physics of how your eye perceives motion in reality.

Just because you had a bad experience with buying the Nexus 6 through Motorola. It doesn't mean everyone is going to have a bad experience. Yes it's sad that you had a bad experience with both devices but not everyone is going to have a bad experience. Just pointing that out...

***** I have a Z2 and it's basically perfect. I say better than the M8. It's just as gorgeous, the speakers are almost as good, the camera is a million times better, even in low light, the button placement rocks (and it's got a shutter button), the waterproofing is cool, the software skin rocks, the dragontrail glass is virtually drop-proof and as you said, wide gamut LCDs are cool. The way Sony did theirs, makes the reds and greens insanely gorgeous, very rich and vibrant, but not over-saturated.

True story. It's by far the best phone of the year, I've had mine for quite some time now and I have 0 complaints. None. Whatsoever.
I guess the z3 is also a good device, but really, it just doesn't offer anything that the HTC doesn't maybe except for waterproofing (the HTC is water resistant too but not as much) and a higher megapixel camera. The HTC is built like a Rolex, has better speakers, an amazing front facing camera, a cleaner UI, and it's basically fool proof, like an iPhone - consistently snappy, smooth and lag free no matter what you throw at it.

I think the Xperia Z3 or LG G3 should've been there. Oh did I mention the sorry ass camera app the Nexus has? Its crap..its plain and boring. No slown mo or 60fps video recording..You cannot control your shot because it has no camera features..its boring. Arthur Brownlee IV Forgot to mention this also. I'll agree the size isn't for everyone. However, once decrypted and updated with the kernel replaced... it's a beast of a phone even running the stock rom. Move to a custom rom and skies the limit. If you don't like the size... the G3 is very nice, I just hate the button placement. My only two requirements I have for any new phone: rootable, unlockable bootloader. I'll take care of the rest from there.

Hey Erica, I currently am a ATT gophone user as it was cheaper and that's all I needed. I'm about to get a regular ATT account and buy a new phone. I currently own a Note 3 and recently it took a 10 minute swim in the lake and died. Im going to Either buy a Note 4 or the Galaxy S6. I know you don't tell people your favorite devices, but can you shed some light on which one you'd more likely buy if you were in the same situation? I like the big screen on the note 4, but is the big screen worth sacrificing the s6's better specs and speeds over? Thanks I appreciate it.

hey Erica i got a question since you used the Xperia Z2 for quite a while: did you notice if the battery was getting worse after some time? when i bought it the phone went 10-11 hours screen on easily, at one day i even managed over 40 hours of lifetime, but now after 3 months i barely get to 5 hours screen on and it doesnt even matter if i have my screen on or not, the battery dies after 12-13 hours >

The problem with these new SoCs is they're not focusing on core optimization, but instead pulling an AMD and just adding more cores. Look at the iPhone. It's dual core, but matches performance of other supposedly higher specced phones. I don't even think Android can handle more than 4 cores.
Rants aside, my favorite Android phone was the One M8. I would probably own one if it's wasn't completely sealed/impossible to replace anything in it. Above all, I like my iPhone 6. It's the best phone for me.

Erica Griffin android at it's core can not handle more than 2 cores but they can make it look like it uses all cores thats easy but when truly tested you wasted money on a phone with 8 cores and only 2 being used

My Nexus 4 shows that it is using all 4 cores during really intensive stuff. Mostly it always using single while the rest are in sleep mode and usually when just doing browsing light it uses the 2 cores and you really have to push it make it use more than 2 cores. Would be nice if it had Hyperthreading though

First of all I have to say that you have done a huge improvement in the field of reviewing technology, you first review i saw was about an accessory that turns the galaxy s3 i believe into a waterproof device, many guys was joking around, and leaving awful comments but you made it to the top so congratulations.
Well my favourite device is the moto X 2014 (unfortunately i didn't get it)
But i'll go for the DROID turbo for the second place, cause it shows a lot of power and the great experience of the moto x.
    Thanks for the review.

Erica - LG G3 - now has official CM 12 nighties and it flies. Now to hardware - it's 4K, 5.5 inches in an unbelievably small frame. You mention your small hands - this device is a pleasure to use - precisely because it's small - but big screen. The hardware specs are also good.

It's so close to the Z2 in specs. I got whiplash from buying a Z2 and the Z3 came out soon after. Soon we will have the Z4. Hopefully the Z4 won't be so incremental in update. I might consider Sony again for the running with the Z4.

    Hi Erica,
I'm currently using an iPhone 6 plus, and I don't think I'm going back to smaller phone again; good screen, can consume lots of content on it. But it has a TERRIBLE landscape keyboard ! Apple must split this thing in 2 on each side of the screen to make it comfortable to use.
I noticed you don't have a lot of Sony phones in your channel, so I was wondering what are your thoughts on the Xperia Z3 line ?
I was thinking of getting an Ultra from Sony, but am waiting till they release one that has a good quality screen & expandability to 128 GB (if not more)

G3 for slim bezels, nicer looking design, better camera w/ better LED flash, removable battery, longer software support, more powerful CPU and more/faster RAM. One Max for better build, WAY better speakers, better display (resolution isn't everything) and nicer looking software. I'd pick G3 personally.
