Area looks very familiar, I'm from eastern Oregon, not far from Pendleton. Once we lost the ability to bait, we canyon hunted like you did. didn't take long to quit that. ODFW estimates a bear population in excess of 30k, absolutely true. and looks at all the sows and cubs, many more on the way. Good on you for hunting the canyons, but plenty can be found up on top. Wish you had taken even a small one, the other wildlife would be grateful. great video, well done. I subbed.
Snow was an issue last year hunting the top which gave us a good opportunity to test ourselves a bit and hit the hills. Glad we did because it was just beautiful and plenty of solitude. We made it up top the last week when it was finally melting down on the roads but so did everyone else. great to see people out in the woods but with limited access everyone was in the same spot it seemed. And yes there seems to be a healthy population of bears.......
I'm from Eastern Oregon. We gave up spring bear hunting because of the large groups shed horn hunting at the same time. The really big bears are hard to find with that much disturbance.
Sure, pressure is a factor. But it is still about the most fun time to be in the woods! You should try again and look for places where pressure is lower.
Heck yeah looks like a great hunt. Was just looking at buying a Oregon nonresident bear tag. Your states tag are a great price. Is there just a general area that you know towards Montana that someone may start E-scouting.
By all means, apply and come harvest a bear. We are out of control! Easier hunts to draw with lots of shot opportunities would be Minam, Ukiah, Starkey, Sled, Chesnim, and Imnaha. Don’t hold out for Emily, it’s a joke. You’ll see 10-20 bears a day there on average but you can kill just as good in any of the previous mentioned.
Agree completely. There are getting to be a lot of bears in most of the units. Emily can be a lot of fun if you get off of the summit road and hunt the canyons. But its like 5-6 points now.
Thanks for all the info. I definitely need to start putting in next year. Looks like drawing closed Feb. 10th. I might just look to see if I can’t just find somebody to tag along on a hunt just to help pack out and learn new area’s.
@@InclineOutdoors shoot last I checked it’s at 8pts to draw it. Ridiculous for the amount of bear in that unit. Definitely a fun hunt but a person has just as much opportunity in less time with other units.

I was thinking about heading over last week of April or first week of May. Is snow still usually an issue then?
It certainly can be depending on where you want to go. There is more snow than last year. Snotel and tripcheck can kinda give you an idea.

Really most of the NE corner of the state has decent bear populations. Most require a couple preference points to draw.
