A 40-year-old mum from Ohio is dating her son’s friend, who is only 22. Tanya initially met Josue through her eldest son who had bonded with Josue over a love of skateboarding and making music. Tanya explained to Truly how she became closer to Josue. “We met in 2018, our relationship changed from friendship to us dating at the beginning of 2020.” At first, her two eldest sons found it difficult to accept the relationship, but are now supportive. However, they have faced criticism from the outside world. Her TikTok blew up with millions of views when she revealed that her new boyfriend was half her age. “I made a simple little video and everybody lost their minds”, Tanya said. “Things that actually made me cry and want to take down the video is them constantly saying I groomed him because I definitely didn’t groom him”. Nevertheless, she feels strongly that she has made the right decision choosing Josue as a life partner. “It’s just opinions, everybody has their opinions, it doesn’t affect us, we’re still going to be together whether they want us to or not”.

I don’t agree with this statement really. I’ve been in a similar situation. The age gap wasn’t massive; it was only 2 yrs and 9 months. However, I met this individual when he was 16 and I was 19. I never saw him in a romantic way. 2 years past. He was 18 turning 19 and I was 21. It was strictly platonic on my end but he developed feelings for me at some point. When he told me how he felt, I was caught off guard. I was a bit uncomfortable with these feelings after his confession because he was younger than me. A mutual friend persuaded me to date him and I finally agreed. Needless to say we only dated for a week 😂 but I finally realized that it’s ok to date someone younger than you. I say this because at no point did I “groom” him during his adolescence. Things just happen unexpectedly. I feel like it might’ve been the same platonic scenario on her end. For me, it did feel uncomfortable that I knew him when he was an adolescent and I was a young adult, but ultimately I did nothing wrong nor was I the one that initiated the short term romance.

So what if the brain is still changing until your late twenties? That doesn't mean you are not capable of making rational decisions before that. If that were the case there wouldn't be genius teen chess players, and all the marriages of people married before 25 would be dysfunctional, and young people would all be criminally inclined while all the older people would be good and self-collected, and teenagers would all be mindless robots obeying their parents perfectly, and we should ban them from voting or choosing university careers, etc. Your brain connections are only one factor among many influencing decisions, like knowledge, beliefs, experiences, self-understanding, conscientiousness, logic, personality, culture, environment, etc. If some teens are capable of understanding advanced maths, and philosophy, better than most adults, they sure can take rational life decisions; there are lots of stupid and impulsive older adults and you don't police them. Biologically speaking, the later brain development only decreases impulsiveness by pruning neurogical connections making communication more effective; but that doesn't mean you are better at taking decisions overall, only faster at avoiding emotional impulses relatively to their younger selves.

By 40 it's really rare that she can have a baby. If she does manage to have a baby the risk go way up for her and the baby. Her chances of miscarriage go way up. Her chances of having serious complications go way up. The chances the kid has issues like down syndrome go way up. Not the case if it was a 22 year old woman and a 40 year old man. Men are wired to be attracted to youth. Women from 18-25 are most desirable for men of all ages. Because that's when a woman is the most beautiful and most likely to have healthy babies.
