Francis Ford Coppola became a very average filmmaker after the ‘70s ended. He also has that whole Victor Salva thing looming over his head, which could completely obliterate his reputation one day.
The reason why Coppola's career declined after the 1970's is because he had to take on a lot of commercial projects in order to keep his studio afloat.

In fairness, Dustin Hoffman has been out of the spotlight for a while. Jon Voight was still in the Ray Donovan movie despite his complaints on “liberal hollywood”. But Shia LaBeouf however… yeah, that’s a tricky area there.
It's because Coppola made the movie outside of the studio system, which makes the Hollywood establishment hate the movie and want it to fail. The same thing happened to Kevin Smith when he didn't want to sell Red State to a Hollywood distributor, but took it on an independent road show instead. Kevin Smith was trashed int the press for that, despite the fact that it was a great example of the kind of independent spirit that he'd embraced since Clerks... oh, but he sold that movie to Harvey Weinstein, so that was just fine. Coppola wanted to do independent deals on his own terms for distribution. The Hollywood establishment doesn't want that kind of independent avenue to succeed. Hence, they trashed it at Cannes. Trash it in the press. Most distributors refused to do the kind of deal with Coppola that he wanted, so the movie didn't get released very widely. Etc. All the excuses as to why just don't add up. "it's too weird"... far weider movies that this have gotten accepted much more readily. "it doesn't make sense" "it's incomprehensible"... okay... if you're stupid. It makes sense if you're willing to do even the slightest bit of work to figure out the metaphors and roll with the style. And who are the distributors or studios to judge what is and isn't a good enough movie to release widely? They'll do big releases for a movie like Morbius... twice... but not for this movie. "We don't know how to sell it!"... it's a Francis Ford Coppola movie starring Adam Driver with amazing visuals about a modern-day Roman empire-like city on the verge of revolution, as a megalomaniacal architect fights against the establishment for a vision of the future. It's really not that hard. But hey, let's have an intern do some obviously AI-generated quotes instead. Once the dust has settled, this movie will likely pass the test of time and be looked upon more favorably years from now. It may never be seen as a masterpiece or anything, but there's a lot to like about it and the negativity about bullshit that doesn't matter, or people who just don't like more abstract movies than the average blockbuster... that'll fade, and the good will utlimately win out. It's a very impressively made movie with a lot of interesting ideas being dealt with. I hope rewatches will bring it all together more, but even if it doesn't, I still like it as the sum of its parts. Nothing really bugged me about it, like so many people seem to have felt with it. I just went with it and enjoyed the ride. It's something different and I like the themes of how to deal with a grand vision that you struggle to bring about. I think it works in both a universal way, and a meta way about Coppola's commentary on the creative process, as well as likely more directly about the process of creating this movie. The political themes were woven into that pretty well, IMO, and as someone who's been a bit of an architecture and city planning enthusiast lately, this movie actually hit on quite a few themes that I found interesting. The theatrical nature of it may not be everybody's cup of tea, and the style of bringing a lot of old-fashioned Shakespearean or Old Hollywood kind of dialogue and fashion, etc, working in Roman epic literature kind of stuff... a bit of a mish-mash, sure, but it works more than it doesn't. You just have to not be expecting a literal depiction of something realistic. Abstract or theatrical is okay in cinema sometimes, guys. It doesn't have to make perfect sense for it to make enough sense for the purposes of a story and impressionistic ideas. Just let go and enjoy the tapestry of creativity. You might find you actually open your mind a little. Scary, I know.
Ehhh, I wouldn't say very good. It had some moments. I thought it was better when it got weird. Alot of it was a bore. Aubrey and Shai were the best parts. Those performances were a real tightrope that I thought they pulled off. Other than that kind of a preachy snoozer.
