    One thing you will do, as do all Marines, is come to understand that the Marine Corps is an exercise in suffering. Some excel at it, others do not.

    • @afcgeo882
      @afcgeo882 3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Yup. The levels of PTSD in these jobs are only rivaled by the levels of personal and family suck. Some really love it though.
      PS: Now that major combatant operations in the ME and SWA are over, expect to not do anything relevant past training, which is a next level suck.

    Def more jobs than what probably available to my grandpa when he was in the OG Raiders during WWII. From what I’ve been told, all the publicly visible stuff on his service is from *after* his time in The Raiders. Be nice to find out more of what his ‘adventures’ consisted of during his time with them (Cpl. Hugh A. Vogel USMC). Great video, awesome info!

      Hey I'm sure you've already seen most of this, but I'm really into genealogy so I looked him up on some things. A newspaper article notes he was a combat engineer. Another newspaper notes that he served as a Corporal with the 2nd Raider Battalion at the Battle of Bouganville. It notes that he and some other Marines were sent behind enemy lines with cameras to scout Japanese positions. It then mentions that he killed a Japanese Lieutenant who was manning a machine gun and then he took the machine gun and the officer's knife as a souvenir. He mailed the machine gun back to his parents. It says that in addition to the Battle of Bouganville, he served at the Raid on Makin, the Battle of Tulagi, the Battle of Edson's Ridge, the Battle of Bairoko and the Battle of Roi (part of the battle of Kwajalen). Then once the 2nd Raider Battalion was disbanded he went on to serve with the Weapons Company of the 4th Marine Regiment. It seems he served with them at the Battle of Guam and the Battle of Okinawa. He received the Navy Cross at the Battle of Okinawa.
      Here's the links: I will say I have a Newspapers.com subscription so I don't know if you'll be able to read them without a subscription.

      Should have been an Army paratrooper and assigned to SF because we rolled out often during our deployments. I did a number of missions outside the wire when I was in my logistics MOS (was infantry part of my career) and I didn’t even think I would do half the shit that I did while in a SF battalion (not the support battalion). My 3 years in group was definitely one of my career highlights given all the training I received and opportunities I got on deployment.
      I would encourage any service member with a support MOS to do a stint in a SOF unit and jump on any opportunity to get more training and get out the wire at times while on deployment when it is possible.

    First off, respect to Marsoc and all the Raiders. The baddest of the bad. I served for 12 years in the corps.
    My godson just signed up for the Corps, his recruiter told him there is no Marsoc, just recon. I'm pretty positive the recruiter is full of shit. My godson scored a 107 on his ASVAB. He wants to become a Raider. Any assistance or advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

    • @jaybird0312
      @jaybird0312 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      1: the max score on ASVAB is 99. Most likely he's talking about his GT score. 107 is good.
      2: every recruiter is full of shit. They're the car salesman of the Corps.
      3: MARSOC isn't entry level. You need to serve time in and rank up. You also need to be locked on. Getting CPLs course, SGTs course and AIC under your belt will help you dramatically. But the biggest thing is being humble and open minded when you enter training otherwise you'll get your shit pushed in.
      Go Infantry with a specialization of Machine Gunner, Mortrman, or Recon(preferrably Recon). Going Recon will test you the most and show you what it'll be similar to and if you actually want to do it. It'll also give you better stats when they're picking. You'll have to be a CPL or more to even start the process. Preferrably SGT which in the Infantry will take at least 3.5 years with the new promotion system.

      Any MOS can try out to be an 0372. You gotta go to A&S and then ITC after for that. As a CSS you'll most likely just get attached to a MSOB and do admin shit for them. But if you want to be a "RAIDER" SOCS-(on the team level) or 0372 is the way to go.

      You can just join recon, they give you the chance at MCT after bootcamp. There you can transition easily into MARSOC. The problem the training is rigorous and challenging. Alot of marines get hurt and drop out. That's just recon. If you look into jumping in from your MOS into MARSOC, it is a bit harder. By then if you get hurt, get in trouble, or struggling with your pft or cft then please reconsider other options. MARSOC (SOCOM respectively) is small and it should be. "Its the best-of-the-best-of-the-best" so to speak. You can go in but there is a selection process you meet on paper then there is a selection process by getting to know you. Literally, if they like you then they will keep you but often times being brown nose or goodie goody with the instructor points wont and will never impress them. They have their own ways of weeding out people and keeping them. Truthfully, IDK about that and I will never say I did.

    To all in the comments that think they are bad ass, unless you are an 03 MOS, 300 PFT, high ASVAB, and high GT score you are fooling yourselves thinking you belong in MARSOC. I spent 6 years USMC, I have seen many fail at attempts of special MOS opportunities. These are the best of the best. If you skate by in your life up until you join the the Marine Corps you will never be MARSOC.

    • @jaybird0312
      @jaybird0312 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's more likely you'll go to OCS first. Unless you're jumping over from the enlisted side over to officer. Then yes, you could. The process is very simple. You just need to go through the right channels and get approved by command. Then they ship you off to OCS

    • @jackschirmer9508
      @jackschirmer9508 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      For one thing, MARSOC is very young compared to the other service's special operations commands. And two, I don't think the Marines want to give up control of their units to JSOC, they want to keep them under MARSOC where they are under a Marine two-star, instead of giving them to JSOC where they might be commanded by an Army, Navy or Air Force three-star.

    • @jimmymartino5433
      @jimmymartino5433 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      USMC didn’t really want a SOCOM unit, for the same reason the Raiders were first disbanded for, all Marines are elite, so why have an elite unit in an already elite unit, it was only after constant badgering by the rest of the military that they propped up MARSOC

    Question: why did it take so long for the Marines to develop a SOF unit?

    • @TheDomRey
      @TheDomRey 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I may have left something out here, but my understanding is the USMC didn’t want to participate in the forming of SOCOM in ‘87 as USMC commanders felt all Marines were elite and didn’t want them operating outside of the FMF. When the Invasion of Iraq began and the Marines were not being utilized compared to other SOF units, Donald Rumsfeld ordered the USMC to create a SOF unit which led to the activation of MCSOCOM Det One in 2003 then transitioning to MARSOC in 2006.
      There’s a few interviews with former Raiders who mentioned how the USMC dug their heels in with forming MARSOC and how their relationship with conventional Marines was contested for a long time.
