Not with Birkenstocks. Birkenstocks are usually worn with thick woolen socks in natural colors (beige or light grey) that are handwoven and untreated, to rub the fact in, that you are environmentalist. The urge to ridecule someone for wearing socks in sandals is overwritten by the urge to ridicule them for wearing Birkenstocks anyways ;-P

That's right, and just what I was about to tell her before seeing your comment. 😂 Yes, the Dassler brothers owned a factory, then they split because of personal animosities towards each others. Adolf (Adi) then founded *Adidas* while Rudolf founded *PUMA*. 😀 It made me smile to see you didn't know this story before, but since you've got one or two or so followers now it isn't much of a deal, at least not for you. 😁

They tried to buy VW Group and were successful so far to get more then 50% of voting right shares. But now they were too short on cash. So the take over ended on a still-mate. Due to still-mate agreement VW Group would buy Porsche AG(the manufacturer) from them, so the Porsche SE would get the desperately needed cash, but in exchange not continue with the take over. The result is Porsche SE owns VW Group and VW Group owns Porsche AG.

There are two reasons why Americans don't know many brands are German:
    1. German heritage is huge in the US and German ancestry is one of the most common there, so they take German names as "oh yeah, their great great great grand parents came from there".
    2. Ignorance and thinking the US is the center of the planet :D.
Look up where Chevrolet actually comes from, or Levi Strauss ("Levi's"), just to name a few that are even globally seen as American. They might have been founded there but the founders were not American.
I would also suggest to look up proper pronunciation. Niv-ay-a is the proper pronunciation for Nivea.

    • @MrReese

Her host family were nice people, but when she arrived, they decided that coming from Germany, she had to be educated about a new invention called "microwave oven" - that was back some time, and they really weren't that common then. She listened politely until they had finished, and then just asked one question: "Do you know what AEG is the abbreviation for?" But hey, sometimes even stuff we think we have thought through in advance ends up in embarassement - there was that time when my guest mum in England picked me up from the ferry, and - fully aware of the road side issue - I nevertheless walked right up to the right hand side of the car. There's nothing like embarassement to remind you from time to time to stay grounded.

Many people in Germany wear Adidas pants for actual sports, but not for other activities. The reason is simple: Typically, a lot of rather poor immigrants used to wear them a lot for all leisure activities (as a status symbol). So many non-immigrants usually associate these pants with bad manners and don't wear them too much.
