I am from Germany and I really enjoy your videos. But guys like you are the ones who should stand up and speak up to protect your democracy much more. You obviously got the intellectual background to see what is going on where this is leading to. Biden might not be the greatest president ever, but at least you can assume that he's committed to democracy, which Trump is definitely not.
In Germany we got a history that tells us how quickly democracy can be gone. And spoiler alert: If you find your situation dissatisfying and frustrating now, it won't get any better once you live in a dictatorship.

@@gayle7962 Even if Trump was of high character and had great policies that served Americans over himself, he is a deeply compromised individual with many debts, many legal woes and a deep desire to avoid consequences. He will hold the country over the fire to save himself. I don't understand how his supporters can't see this. Many of the supporters think that the government needs to be disrupted and corruption removed. This may be true to some extent but Donald Trump is just not the guy, he has too much at stake personally to serve the country like he is supposed. He doesn't even say he will serve the country, he literally says that the priority of his presidency will be to go after his political enemies.

Joel, if people our age give up on politics, we may as well give up on democracy. The way you speak about politics, same as most of my friends, is so worrisome. The reason so much BS goes on, in the US, is because the youth is apathetic and doesn't participate in civic life If we leave politics and the nation's future in the arthritic hands of the Boomer generation, how can we complain about the rise of divisive politicians? Get interested or soon you won't have the option to.

These are difficult times. But one message we got from our history in Germany (and from modern dictators like Putin):
Fascism does not need a majority of supporters. It only needs a majority that doesn't care. That's the idea behind Bannon's "Flood the zone with sh*t.".
Perfection in politics will never be reached. But the "solution" is to find ways making more and more people participate in democracy so they can feel on their own that democracy works.

Love that you like this type of humor, we got a lot of it in Germany. ;-) That said, as some mentioned here before, it is quite scary for many Germans to watch US politics ever since Trump entered the scene. He is the first true populist in US politics in my lifetime (as far as I remember) and people either fall for him or they underestimate the damage he can do. I so often hear things like "I just find him entertaining at this point" or "I can't take him seriously". Guess who received a similar reception in German and European politics back in the day? Hitler was made fun of everywhere in Europe, not taken seriously and he ended up almost obliterating the continent and causing serious damage world-wide. And that is what scares me as a German because there are so many similarities. Don't give up on democracy, even if US politics are in desperate need of an overhaul. Nobody is going to stand up for your rights or your freedoms (yeah, I know.... LOL) unless you do it yourself. (By the way: Same goes for Germany these days. We have some real threats to democracy in our own political ranks.)

But I have voted in every federal, provincial and civic election since. I am now 75 years old. Voting is a privilege. Of course it is a little easier for me as I am Canadian! But we definitely have our wackos too! I’m just glad I don’t live in Alberta which is Canada’s equivalent to Texas! I live in Manitoba and we just elected a new provincial government and we have the first Indigenous Premier in Canada. So far so good - he and his party are very popular.

I'm Norwegian, and I grew up hearing something similar all the time: People who don't vote contribute to the outcome of an election just as much as those who do, and only the voters have the right to complain. I have always voted, and always educated myself on the ACTUAL politics of the party I have voted for. Words are cheap, and I don't want to vote based on the loyalty to a party that may not actually deserve loyalty. Climate change doesn't only mean global warming, the weather is simply becoming more volatile in the direction of both ends of the temperature scale with longer and harder droughts, harder rains, bigger wildfires, stronger Hurricanes, and Tornados, more and higher floodings. The reason for that is the loss of Arctic (and Antarctic) ice, which used to stabilize the weather with a low-pressure area fixed over the Arctic with the Jetstream whirling around the depression anti-clockwise. The destabilization of the depression destabilizes the Jetstream and makes it meander (move in wiggly lines back and forth over the northern hemisphere) instead of sticking to the Arctic depression. And if the Jetstream moves south during winter, it will suck very cold Arctic air behind it on its northern side in the southern direction. Therefore the winter conditions in North America will become harder while Europe will not be hit that hard because of the warming by the Gulf Stream. And if the Jetstream gets fixed to a position for some time we get an Omega or reverse Omega weather situation, which means the weather won't change, for some time, for example, if it was hot and dry it will remain that way for some time and might result in a drought, and if it was raining, you can expect many days of rain perhaps until no precipitable water is left.
However, warming is the big problem because humans can't survive warmer temperatures for more than a few hours since the heat will destroy the proteins of the brain and make the human die.
And about Trump, he doesn't not only want to become a big dictator if he gets elected. On Monday in Iowa, he revealed his plan to build an iron dome above the entire United States. Not even the most crazy science fiction author could come up with such a crazy idea.

And we even have a planet in our solar system that had this happen to it: Venus. To put the temperatures on Venus into perspective: you could put a 16 inch pepperoni pizza on your windowsill and it will cook in less than 10 seconds.

Hey bud, NZ here, the thing with politics in other countries is that they are supposed to be diplomates, statesmen's & debaters. Orators of moving address's & ideas to inspire and encourage followers, people of dignity, respect. When these leaders are caught in criminal acts, or shame of cheating etc, most normal people then shun them, as they should and expect accountability.
Sadly enough, in the USA at present their is a party that doesn't follow these principles, and the rest of the world is shocked to see nothing done about elected officials blatantly carrying on as nothing has happened. Worse yet, a voter base that continues to support them. Quite frankly, its the greatest train wreck ever witness, i just feel for those that will caught up in it.

I remember one speech made by then President Trump who said precisely what you did in this video "If it's warming, why is it snowing in New York?". This is one reason why the global science community decided to rationalise and change the most used term to Climate Change. Then the idiots come out saying things like "but the climate has always been cyclical!" Ignoring that the climate is changing at an enormously faster rate than previously. Just this past year, with a record global temperature (high), the storms that it has created have cause wind damage, surge tides and flooding events right across the globe - when I was your age Joel, storms happened just occasionally, and they lacked the intensity and the volume of rainfall to anything happeneing these days. I can only assume that when DJT wnet to Wharton, the laws of thremodynamic was not on the curriculum.

If someone is confused why the dumbass-award is looking like a post/ bollard (not sure which one is the better translation): The award is called "Der goldene Vollpfosten 2015", literally translated "The golden full post 2015". Vollpfosten is a serious insult and it means someone is very, very dumb. Even Pfosten/ post is an insult but the "full" made the superlative.

German humour at its best, irreverent, well-observed and totally en point. Sorry you are having to be dragged into the adult world too soon JPS but it is true that a country gets the politicians it deserves so what does that say about your elders. The big mistake was the Supreme Court decision that permitted corporations to be treated as individuals and this opened the door for massive amounts of money to enter politics. Your politicians are essentially bought and paid for and have no need to mind their constituents. Have you read Project 25? It is scary and coming to your hometown quite soon if Trump wins in November, Trump is an idiot but he is surrounded by cleverer richer entities who are looking to establish the USA as a fascist state. Sorry to be serious but I am scared for you, man

What we need to get in place, though, is ranked choice voting. And that is happening at lower levels. Until it's everywhere, I firmly believe in voting for the lesser evil. If your perspective of politics is only from a social media lens, of course, you are going to think every politician is crap. There are many politicians out there who genuinely care about people and what change they can bring to help others. They don't make news because they don't do things to garner sensationalistic coverage. They work and hope that they will make a positive difference. Seek out those people and support them and get others to do the same, and that may actually help to change the narrative and certainly your perspective.
