    You create beautiful videos man. I gotta say, these views and all, scenery, just everything seems so good for the soul. But i got a question, dont you get afraid knowing there could be dangerous predators lurking about?

      I do a bit, I usually carry a spotlight for that but I’ve quit carrying it on these last two trips.
      Also my dogs are good at keeping them away but this last time my dog was ignoring everything. I was up a couple times in the night because the horses sounded an alarm. Mostly though, predators prefer east targets.

      Thank you!
      Do you have some historical evidence for those thin black socks?

    Beautiful country! Love your Buckskin. I've always wanted one ever since watching Bonanza as a kid.
    You mentioned bears. Do you ever see any mountain lions up there?
    My hubby and son go riding up by Fort Meade, which was an old Calvary fort, and Bear Butte. Last time they went, they found an old headstone from the 1800s.

      I saw a cougar last year, it was lower and 14 miles away but same mountains.

    • @OverOnTheWildSide
      @OverOnTheWildSide  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s amazing! A headstone alone that no one was aware of?

    I LOVE this!! I've been backpacking and camping numerous times in various environments and have been wanting to get into this exact thing - primitive, horseback, traditional camping trips!!! I'm trying to learn horseback riding right now, any advice? Thanks again!

    • @OverOnTheWildSide

      Cool! Glad to hear someone else is wanting to do it as well. Finding mellow horses is expensive these days but, a good horse is key. Maybe even mules, they’re excellent in the mountains.

    You outta carry an axe or a machete for clearing some trails, but the trees there are pretty big, one time I was heading up a mountain road and a little tree was blocking it but luckily I always got a machete in my car, what kind of bears do you got there? I only only got black bears so I don’t worry to much unless I see a cub haha then mamas around, ya I always carry a couple bandanna I don’t use them much but they have there uses especially if I forget my leather gloves and just use them for handling things around the fire, like off lord of the rings you need you’re first and second breakfast, I know trekking around makes a man hungry lol, I’ve been watching a lot of wanted dead or alive lately you’re Steve McQueen

    • @OverOnTheWildSide
      @OverOnTheWildSide  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah we just have black bears so not much to worry about. I’ve been wondering what I might do about that tree, it’s so huge though I’d need quite a saw to deal with it.
      Bandanas are handy for sure. I like wearing them…

    Looks like a great trip again, I was wondering since I’ve never been a big coffee drinker. What does the letting them sit and degas after roasting. Wishing y’all the best OVER ON THE WILD SIDE. 💪🏽🎥🐎💯👍

      @OverOnTheWildSide  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m not really sure why it helps it’s just what I’ve been told. I also don’t know if they allowed them to degas in the Old West days, I’d like to find out on that.

    Great vid... have you tried to bobble the horses to keep them from wondering off too far, or is that not done anymore.

      I’ve tried it before. Other people have told me they do it but when I did they took off down the road for the truck so I decided it wasn’t worthwhile.

    So I have been waiting quietly for a while. Again this maybe something by now you have addressed, as I'm not skipping ahead to see what you have learned. Also there is other things with experience will become second nature. The goal seems to be an overnight stay with success being a fish dinner before bed, or for breakfast. So trying understand the thinking I have to ask. Why are we passing miles of fishible water to get a lake? Streams and beaver ponds are far more productive. Don't get me wrong I love lake fishing, but it is completely different mind set of time and patience. Creek and beaver pond fishing is using what comes naturally. Cut a fresh sapling of local creek bed growth of 6-8' long, as straight as possible,and tying a line to the small end about a foot longer than the pole. Hooks only no weights. Flipping it up stream and let current due the work for you. I refer this as think like a fly fisherman nymphing . Same thing with beaver ponds no weigh just bait or fly flip it out on the deepest darkest water and let it do what it would naturally do. If it an angle worm it lands on the water with little disturbance. 90 percent of the time it's fish on before it hits bottom. Nymphs same thing let it do what a nymph does. If it is artificial nymph simulate the natural action. Even minnows work this way. Roll over old near rotting logs for worms. Slow water flat rocks pickup and look at the bottom for nymphs. Don't be be afraid to use crickets/ and grasshoppers. It can be true fish are smaller in the stream, but 2-3 seven inchers beats zero 14" everytime, and far more eager to take the bait as it passes by naturally.

      The lake is planted and has a lot of fat hungry trout. The creek only has small wild ones. I’ve caught one out of it and it is more fun, that’s for sure.
