I ran Atari Parties for a decade, and a bunch of us set up a variety of systems. Without pirating ROMs, the only way to experience classics like Space Invaders on the 2600 is via cartridge. Imagine if Atari could convince [whoever owns the rights to?] Taito could freshly license that? 🤔
As a huge retro Atari fan, I really dig the direction the company has taken since the new VCS. (I was an original backer and I still do enjoy that platform.) I pre-ordered the 2600+, and I will eventually get a 7800+ although I do not see the necessity to pre-order at the moment. My journey into the 2600+ took me into a quest for cartridges. There are a lot available and the most common can be found for $3 to $5 on eBay or maybe your local used game store. HOWEVER (and this is my main point) the production numbers of some cartridges are slim and finding them for a reasonable price is practically impossible. Try finding 2600 H.E.R.O. and you'll see what I mean. And THIS is the issue with Atari releasing 5200+, Jaguar+, and Lynx+ consoles. The cartridges out these are scarce. The original VCS/2600 sold something like 30 Million units. That's A LOT of "Combat" and "Pitfall" etc cartridges out there. The 7800 sold almost 3.8 Million units and those cartridges (aside from Pole Position 2) are a good bit more rare and more pricey. The Lynx sold about 2Million, the 5200 about 1 Million, and the Jaguar sold only about 250k units. See what I'm getting at? The existence of cartridges out there on eBay and in retro game stores gets more and more rare. If Atari is going to stick to the cartridge only direction for "plus" systems they should hopefully release new cartridges (with old and new games) to meet the console demand. Otherwise you're going to love your Jaguar+ until you actually get it and try finding cartridges to use in it. All this said - I would really love it if, given the "cartridge only" direction, they release more multi-cartridges so if you're putting down $30 to $60 bucks per you're getting more than 1 game.
@@mugf00t I think the release of a lynx plus or Jaguar plus would work if they go one of two routes. Either they plan on supporting the consoles by re-releasing the games they can and leveraging the homebrew community, this doing what Blaze does and put out maybe 6-12 games a year, or they also allow for and SD card slot to run software from. Or both. I think it could be done but they have to be dedicated to selling games like they are for the 2600+ but they will want to put out more and announce more as well.
@@TheAtariNetwork Right - although I think the lack of an SD slot on the 2600+ and 7800+ is telling. They want to sell cartridges. Including an SD slot undermines that market. Atari distanced themselves from the Atari Token, and are doing an admirable job with it's Web3 presence. They have a very small team for their AtariX division, however, with their offerings of products, tie in's and contests, they have to lean into the future too, as their moniker states, "Futuristic Since Forever". More support for the VCS is lacking, a new version of it would be welcomed, especially if they can integrate Web3 into it to bring fresh young minds into the space. A Jaguar or Lynx product is vital to keep their current fan base happy and still attract new fans.
I really wish there were a way to put all the games in one format and distribute them digitally and there was something like a dedicated system that played all the games so I didn't have to keep buying new devices. Something I could keep on a desktop or table. Like, in its own corner of the room.
I grew up with the 2600 and 8-bit computer (both of which I still have), and picked up Lynx and Jaguar in the late 90s (also still have), and am jazzed about Atari under CEO Wade. I picked up the 2600 Lego set, a 2600+ (to supplement my RF 7800 on the big living room TV), Atari50 for the Switch (finally! 8-bit, Lynx, & Jaguar love!), and the 400Mini (the joystick is poorly designed 😖, but otherwise pretty good). So yeah... this is all WAY better than speaker baseball caps, NFTs, vaporware hotels, and a modern console I have no interest in, or room for). They did Atari Summer Camp, which was cute but mostly an excuse to sell merch. And are making lots of merch I don't care about (and kinda laugh at), but... booze and hot sauce? Yeah they know the general demographic of theur target market 😂😂😂 I hope they keep it up. And yeah, a portable* version of the Lynx would be rad! * See what I did there?
The "+" has an arm processor that can handle much more than what we are being sold. It would be trivial to package games from 16 and possibly 32 bit systems in an atari game cartridge. These games would not be backwards compatible of course but I think this is the idea that should be pursued. A line of games from the entire back catalog of retro systems being sold at low prices in a "+" Atari shell with the warning: "For Atari Plus System only". I wonder what the arm is really capable of and... when someone will hack it to find out.
I think Atari could be a relatively profitable company simply from the fact that not every game requires you to write it using the unreal engine and make it a modified 3-D shooter. I facepalm when I see somebody make something like a Metro Vania clone using 3-D graphics. That raises the cost of production exponentially for a game that still plays like a 2-D pixel mapped game. The success of the one up arcade replicas prove that there’s a profitable industry for people who still make 2-D games.
Just give us sequels to the old games. ( I really want to learn more about the Bentley Bear universe ) Also give us story driven games. ( Arcade games with no story are only fun for like 20 mins ) Yes, preserving the past in collections are nice and all but that alone won't be enough for Atari to bounce back.
i would love to see atari jaguar, and cd, re-released for an affordable price. i always wanted to play highlander on atari jaguar cd, but doing so would cost a fortune. also, i have a copy of white men can't jump sealed, that i want to play as well, but can't currently. cool vid btw
Maybe Atari could become a budget gaming company. Like the 2600 jr sold 20 million units through its lifetime, so it had to be successful. Right now it is an untapped market, like name a budget gaming company that makes game consoles.
Now I say Atari Jaguar mini get outta here with that noise. Atari Jaguar+ take my money, with all the homebrew content currently available and coming on AtariAge for the Jaguar, Atari would be foolish to not make a Jaguar+ with a functional cartridge slot.
Light guns DO work on modern TV... Polymega is about to ship their modern light gun in December. Guess who owns 53% of Playmaji... the maker of the Polymega..... ATARI
Not sure where they should go, it seems they are getting some notice here with these Atari + systems. I have the old Atari 7800 and used the GameDrive and the new audio and video port the the GameDrive is awesome. I stick with my old system, I may get the Atari 7800+ same as the 2600+, they are the same, the only difference the wireless controller and maybe some hardware update. Atari needs to be careful or flop like the old company did.
Not to be negative but it’s over. The older Atari fans are ready to hit the adult living community soon. Desktop versions of their old arcade titles with authentic controls would b the only thing I would buy at this point. Toobin, 720, Tempest, Marble Madness would look great on my desk. They probably could license their IPs to Anbernic for a Lynx. If they came out with the same form factor, neglected left handed people would rejoice. More than a little surprised we never saw any other company cater to the lefties.
I'd say it's debatable if the "plus" consoles are an upgrade. Yes, they have better video output and play games from multiple systems, but they also aren't 100% compatible with the entire library of games for either system, they don't work with niche controllers like the Star Raiders Video Touchpad (really just a repackaged keyboard controller), and they have lag in their controller response time, which is especially noticeable with paddles. Don't get me wrong, I use emulators, I just can't see spending money on what is arguably a worse experience than playing on original hardware.
@@DaveMoorland-zv3tn Last I heard the 2600+ wasn't compatible with Robot Tank, Pitfall 2, Mountain King, Omega Race (doesn't support the special joystick add-on), any game that requires a keypad controller (Codebreaker, Star Raiders, etc), Indy 500 (controller issues), and of course the Starpath Supercharger.
Based on their 2024 financial report (reporting $4.2M in hardware sales), Atari may have sold ~30,000 2600+ consoles, compared to ~10,000 VCS 800. So they're definitely heading in the right direction. Jumping on the NFT/blockchain bandwagon reeked of desperate leaders who had no clue what to do. Launching a Lynx+ might be a good idea, especially as modern technology could produce a console with a much larger screen that doesn't drain the batteries and connectivity with other Lynx through Wifi instead of a cable. But Atari still needs some killer games - they can only live off of legacy games for so long. They definitely had the right attitude when they purchased Crystal Quest to package it with the 7800+ instead of suing Bob DeCrecenzo into oblivion for using Atari's copyrighted names. But can they attract more developers who will bring other types of games?
@@ecdhe all yet to be seen but let's hope they continue moving in the same direction. Getting Robert Decresenzo on board was a smart move. @@ecdheend user publicly posted serial #'s on Atariage show the 2600+ already over 60k.. and Ben from Plaion has since posted he has produced more production runs. For the VCS- numerous public shipping port invoices based on weight per package estimates.

The funny thing about the 7800 is NOBODY Bought them! The only console that most people even know exist from Atari is the 2600. When I tell people I didn’t have a 2600 as a kid, I had an Atari 800 most normies have no clue Atari made anything other than the 2600. Atari started to fail when Time Warner got involved. They broke the company into Atari Corp. and Atari games where Atari games was there arcade division. Atari games is where all the technology came from prior to this. There are retro arcade enthusiast who re-engineered the pokey chip not for the computers, but for Arcade consoles. I had an Atari 800, 800xt, STe, ST and Jaguar. If we want something other than 2600 quality graphics, Atari needs to get the rights to Atari Game ip. They had a good number of arcade releases that were pretty good in the decade following the spin off of the company, and Atari games is really the company that Nolan Bushnell started. The company that started the arcade video game industry.
@@FunkmasterV This is just not true. Same can be said for every game console released !! We cannot expect perfection for every game released !!!
That's true, but Atari will always hold a special place for defining the space all later console companies thrived in. When Genx is gone, Atari will always be the company who pioneered the modern console gaming marketplace, and Nintendo seem like just another stopgap on the way to modern gaming.

Yeah they know the general demographic of theur target market 😂😂😂
I hope they keep it up. And yeah, a portable* version of the Lynx would be rad!
* See what I did there?
Wish they would make a FPGA version of the 7800+ so that all 2600 and 7800 official, and homebrews, can be played
@@southtexasatlatl that would be nice
They can.
There are barely any games that don't work on the plus systems.
I’d love either a Lynx or Jaguar Plus. An Intellivision Plus would also be awesome
Just give us sequels to the old games. ( I really want to learn more about the Bentley Bear universe )
Also give us story driven games. ( Arcade games with no story are only fun for like 20 mins )
Yes, preserving the past in collections are nice and all but that alone won't be enough for Atari to bounce back.
I hope they do something with the 5200 and Jaguar. Please! 🙏
I'm picking up a 2600+ but the more consoles the better. I am a big console gamer and the more consoles I have to game the better
I have built a huge AI cluster farm with 7 million Atari 2600's. I'm bringing it online tomorrow!
i would love to see atari jaguar, and cd, re-released for an affordable price. i always wanted to play highlander on atari jaguar cd, but doing so would cost a fortune. also, i have a copy of white men can't jump sealed, that i want to play as well, but can't currently. cool vid btw
I want to see an atari 800+ or 130xe+ 1200+
then
atari 1040ste+
I think the Lynx was a sweet and capable machine that was not appreciated. I would love to see some attention placed on it.
Maybe Atari could become a budget gaming company. Like the 2600 jr sold 20 million units through its lifetime, so it had to be successful. Right now it is an untapped market, like name a budget gaming company that makes game consoles.
Interesting thought
My favorite 50 year old indie company, Atari
Now I say Atari Jaguar mini get outta here with that noise. Atari Jaguar+ take my money, with all the homebrew content currently available and coming on AtariAge for the Jaguar, Atari would be foolish to not make a Jaguar+ with a functional cartridge slot.
What's the name of the Game at minute 3:44? That maze game
Dungeon Stalker for the Atari 7800. It's from AtariAge and you can find it on their website and on eBay!
The main thing is that they don't make a mess like the Intellivision Amico or Coleco Chameleon.
Amico Chameleon
Light guns DO work on modern TV... Polymega is about to ship their modern light gun in December. Guess who owns 53% of Playmaji... the maker of the Polymega..... ATARI
@@whatspeedlimits traditional light guns do?

@@whatspeedlimits oh ok
I hope sega does what Atari is doing and release the Sega Genesis+
Atari VCS is the reason they make games again.
Nintendo caters to lefties exclusively.
Er, yes they are.
What are you even talking about?
And I think releasing Adventure III (Bob had been working on that) would be smart. But it's going to take some smart decisions to keep things moving. I'm excited to see what happens!
"Atari may have sold ~30,000 2600+ consoles, compared to ~10,000 VCS 800" You might want to check your #'s...as we have verifiable proof they made over double that of both systems...
@@whatspeedlimits for the VCS 800 I looked at Wikipedia (although it's true it is sometimes false). For the 2600+ I looked at Atari's own financial results for FY2024 which shows hardware revenue of $4.2M. Now, what verifiable proof are you talking about?
@@ecdheend user publicly posted serial #'s on Atariage show the 2600+ already over 60k.. and Ben from Plaion has since posted he has produced more production runs. For the VCS- numerous public shipping port invoices based on weight per package estimates.
@@ecdhe If you're doing simple division to calculate your numbers, consider that manufactures sell their products mainly at wholesale prices, not retail. Most units would have been purchased at places like Costco and Amazon, not from Atari's website.
If they were smart they would get the Activision guys all back together to make some new games with name credit and a large percentage of revenue…. Pull them out of retirement for a year or two.
Make audacity games a second party
The sold more than the Master system worldwide
@@FunkmasterV This is just not true. The Master System sold over 13 million units in it's lifetime plus another 8 million in Brazil thanks to TEC Toy still supporting it to this day, the 7800 only sold around 4 million units and was only successful in the US, definitely didn't outsell the Master System worldwide.
@@Joey-The-Chud well they sold the master system in Brazil until 1999 or so. It was a huge hit down there, but the 7800 did well in Europe and Australia too. during the actual lifespan of that generation, Atari outsold the master system worldwide.
@@FunkmasterV the only place the 7800 outsold the Master System was the US and it was very close ( 3.7 million 7800s vs around 2 million Master Systems ) the rest of the world is no contest, the Master System's sales in Europe ( 6 million + ) are more than all of the 7800s total sales ( 4 million + )

Atari may be doing alright on nostalgia but they're not setting themselves up for long term success.
Whomever runs Atari age on Facebook is ban happy. Ruins a happy place to be.
@@JetScreamer_YT that's a real shame. Let's make a better Atari community!
It's been a very weird place for a very long time. The retro community wanted to adopt it at one point, but they went away thinking Atari people are jerks, which is often the case on that site.
I'm down with the old school Atari goodness, but please God no Jaguar crap. That console died and that's what it deserved. No reason to bring that garbage back, no one wants Trevor mcfur 2024 or the where did you learn to fly lady.
Not too many decent Jaguar games !!! It would be a huge mistake if Atari released a Jaguar mini !!! What would be better -- more Lynx games added to the Atari 50 . Not all 2600 games are good !!! Same can be said for every game console released !! We cannot expect perfection for every game released !!!
The 7800 has the same primitive outdated crappy audio chip as the 2600
Boomer nostalgia is dying. Getting that Gen X nostalgia money now.
That's true, but Atari will always hold a special place for defining the space all later console companies thrived in. When Genx is gone, Atari will always be the company who pioneered the modern console gaming marketplace, and Nintendo seem like just another stopgap on the way to modern gaming.
it is still emulation why even bother.
All "games" are archaic.not really axari either
There such boomers people should get over obsession with these ancient consoles already
