I'm going to have to admit: Win7 was the 1st Windows I legitimately purchased and owned. Every past version between 95 up to and including XP I "borrowed" from where I worked. When Vista came about, mmmm, sure, I "borrowed" that as well, but I found it so damn buggy with huge compatibility issues I had more luck using Windows ME, and that's saying something. So yeah when 7 came out, I took my rear down to my local PC World and bough a copy and I thoroughly enjoyed 7. I stuck with 7 all the way until Win10 got released.
I know tech needs to move on and the cost of maintaining older software gets more expensive, but still it's sad to see Windows 7 now formally enter the "retro OS" club. Goodbye 7, I will always have a place in my heart for you, right next to XP and 98SE.

Win 7 will remain my favorite, it lasted on my now 9 year old laptop and i never had to reinstall / fix anything on it, was really reliable for me, but had to move to win10 when i got a new laptop, i could have always reinstalled it, but i slowly started getting used to 10, it's a small change UI wise unless you use apps like Start10 etc... but i've found it to be good, not as reliable since i had to reinstall it a few times since it's launch to fix various issues. i hate the bloatware myself but i really don't understand peoples reaction to the "spyware" as they call it, everywhere you go online or anything you use technology wise keeps some kind of records of you nowadays. and some people are willing to just go on facebook and give that information to everyone they know willingly by trying to tell people their life story. as long as they don't start using it to negatively effect me or the way i use my computer, i really don't see the problem.

    • @thepuzzlemaster64

YES! That was one of my biggest issues with Win10. I have this cheap laptop with an HDD that I used for school, and almost like a ticking time bomb it would slowly slow down my laptop, day after day to the point where it took a DAY to transfer *1GB* to my USB.
I showed my computer repair teacher this, and he didn't know what the hell was happening with the hard drive. I later formatted the hard drive, and it would still do the same thing (even if almost nothing was installed). I had to regrettably buy an SSD to "fix" this issue if I wanted to continue my studies.
Nowadays the only thing I install on new computers is either Windows 7 or Linux.

There is a mistake here. The only reason Vista had performance issues was due to the really bad hardware at the time. Eventually, due to vista, OEMs started building machines with 1, 2GBs of RAM and such, so Vista ran well. So when 7 came out (which is really build on the same kernel etc) PCs were already quick enough to handle it.

I think a lot of people hate the automatic updates, but that can be disabled or set how you want if you know how. @@eness379 It just has the Linux *kernel* underneath the hood, that doesn't change anything on top of it. What he said still holds true for even your example, a point and click OS, and end user never has to use anything even remotely linux related, everything is presented as is and is ready to use as a typical smartphone OS. And I'll add to Computer User's point that Linux still has severe compatibility issues: Wi-Fi cards working intermittently, system fans not working, not having support for fingerprint sensors, not having support to park HDD platters when moved fast (I could go on), which again, sure, you could get working, but nothing that the average user (myself included) would do. And as for Computer User, I am extremely sorry for the terrible loss you've suffered, may they rest in peace.

My PC, (Dell Inspiron 530) was preinstalled with Vista but the same model was typically preinstalled with XP and weirdly enough if you get a BIOS update you can upgrade from the factory Celeron to a Intel 2 Core Duo and a Intel Quad Core if you got a motherboard that was made by a different manufacturer but the BIOS update also increased max supported RAM from 4 GBs to 8 GBs. Apparently this PC was considered a beast for gaming back when it was first released. I'd say it has aged a lot better than most prebuilt home PCs from the time period and it has no right being this good for its age and original purpose.

I wanted to make this post this morning, stupid work..
I've known about the official end of support for a while and with what Windows 7 means to me and the importance of legacy compatibility, which Windows 10 utterly broke.. I have built A dedicated Windows 7 PC yesterday, 1/13/20.
    For those curious about specs.
    Msi z170a Xpower gaming titanium
    I7-7700k
Cooler master 212 Evo black ( will upgrade in the future)
    Xpg S8200 Nvme 500gb ( Windows 7 Ultimate)
850 Evo 250gb for a fast scratch disk or extra game drive.
Gtx 1050ti ( would love to have a 980ti for period accurate with the motherboard)
    Seasonic 650w power supply
    LG Blu Ray drive
I cheaped out on the case though. I painted the case sun yellow it has a yellow, black and blue accents in some places. Tempered glass panel. This thing looks like a sports car.
And to top it off I bought an OEM Windows 7 case badge as well as one of those metal Windows 7 ones.
I might install the Enterprise version so I can get that extra support but I don't know where to find it.
That's all I wanted to say.

I have a strong feeling that people will make patches that allow windows 7 to continue receiving updates and support after all it is an os that is extremely popular. Its kinda funny to how Microsoft do everything they can to get users to upgrade from 7 to 10 and yet people still even when support has ended decide to stick with 7 regardless.

Win7 was my longest used system. I still have it on my laptop. That's because I'm producing music and when I want to open my very old projects, they are using very old 98/XP era audio plug-ins. I somehow managed to get them all working in Win7 10 years ago but I remember, it was already a nightmare. I doubt that I could do this again on Win10. So what I probably end up doing will be, dump the win7 system hdd to an image file, upgrade to win10, and boot the image as a VM when needed.

I tried to reinstall Windows 7 recently on an old laptop that wasn't going to be connected to the internet; however I did want to at least connect it long enough to update it (my Windows 7 CD is like SP0 - purchased right after Win7 came out).....complete no-go. Couldn't get Windows update to work at all. Was able to manually download and install SP1 but most other manual updates I tried just kept giving errors.
Finally gave up and just put Windows 10 on it (which does not run well on this laptop but was the only other version I had an existing product key for, and I couldn't use linux cause the program it would mostly be running only works in Windows). Maybe it was just my experience, but it seems Microsoft has turned off the Windows 7 update servers or whatever.
