You can prevent the swirl marks by not drying the car with a towel after a touchless clean. A touchless cleans gets rid of 90-95% of the dirt, but the leftovers cause scratches if you pass them with a towel. I hope this helps!

That windshield is probably more like $2k. Sucks getting chips but it happens and I feel your pain. I bought a new '18 Corvette Grand Sport over the weekend and plan on getting at least the front bumper cover protected with clear wrap. I plan on keeping the car a long time. Xpel is probably what I'll use.

    Dear Mr. AutoVlog,
I must tell you that I was never a big fan of Mercedes vehicles. Now I did start gaining interest with your first AMG. It made me subscribe to your channel and after seeing the modifications and upgrades on your new AMG, especially the wheels, this is one of my all-time favorite vehicles on the road today. I’m not a huge car guy but your videos are so engaging that I find myself spending more time watching them than any other TH-cam channel! I’m looking forward to your next video on the Ford SUV that I didn’t know existed until I watched your video. Thank you for the entertainment and knowledge that you provide me on a consistent basis!

I had the same issue with my Silverado. Bought it brand new, ordered a 3M clear film for the hood. Took a few weeks to get and in that time, I got several rock chips. So many so that the hood was repainted under warranty. Installed a bug shield on the newly painted hood and hopefully it will protect it until I can install the film once the weather breaks.

My thoughts exactly. Although I can relate to Mike's striving for "car perfection" ... it is, in a way...impossible. A car will always be exposed to the elements. Rain, wind, dirt flying up hitting it etcetera... That's just what will happen if you drive it, no matter where you live. Best you can do is just be careful, wash and maintain your car and try to keep it as clean as possible. But spotless? That's just never gonna happen, unless you put it in a museum indeed!

    • @tharpeaddy
      @tharpeaddy 6 ปีที่แล้ว

I’m probably the only person that care less how a car looks as long as it drives the way I want it to and is reliable. You can easily make a car look like anything, get it painted etc but it’s harder to make a car drive really good. Now if the car is raggedy and drives like shit then yea it’s a shit then and will need some money to be invested in it

  • @jaberoujourney

I feel your pain with the swirl marks and chips. I've just purchased an Audi Q5 for my wife. I took delivery with no wash and all the wrapping on the vehicle from the ship. I'm currently 25 hrs in to detailing and putting ceramic coating on her car. With another few hours tomorrow, to complete the job. I fully wrapped my RS5 but still got a few chips that went thru the wrap during my 4 years of owning the vehicle. So wrapping will definitely protect your car majority of the time but is not 100% guaranteed and I prefer the look of a un-wrapped vehicle that is highly polished.

Pittsburgh weather is not kind to having a pristine car in the winter time, snow melt occurs all the time, been there done all that you experience with the beast. Black vehicle is another issue with pristine look, used to have a black 79 blazer purchased new (yes I'm a little older than you) but my experiences are the same 30+ years ago.....With that said the wheels look fantastic with the low profile tire combo from to back. btw saying u did a couple burnouts is a major understatement based on the diff tread depth between front to back.

Just replaced a 2017 - c class sedan windshield in New York - it was about 900 dollars thru insurance. Geico. You must have glass coverage I’m assuming ?
Be careful what glass you get. PUSH PUSH PUSH FOR OEM GLASS
    There are two choices:
    1. The Carl Benz black logo windshield. Which fits OEM and has no problem with lane keep assist and rain sensors.
    2. Chinese glass, doesn’t fit right. Glass is thinner. Sensors have to be recalibrated and/or replaced.
Geico doesn’t Guarantee they will give you OEM glass, they tell you “Like new or kind quality” whatever the hell that means.
Safelite came and did it in my driveway. I was lucky to get OEM glass. But other people I know have told me horror stories with Chinese glass.
    Hope this helps.

Even touchless car washes can add swirlies. A water jet can be just as/even more cutting than a rough towel or brush. Have you ever tried putting your hand near the outflow of a power washer? It's really inevitable to get imperfections with your car's clear coat or paint and you're shoveling sand against the tide to think you can completely prevent them from happening. I also have a black MB and even with MB's harder clear coats, those swirlies are a way of life. Keep up the great content.

Actually, if your car is new, you CAN fix small stone chips perfectly. (If it's not new, the problem is, that your paint has aged, and you won't be able to perfectly match it with the touch up paint.) And with "perfectly" I mean that even you, who knows there was a chip, and who knows where it was, will have trouble finding the fixed spot - if you can at all. The trick is to not only apply touch up paint, but also factory clear coat over it, and to wet sand the surface (possibly multiple times) to make it perfectly level. And of course you will also have to polish it to perfection. But it can be done.
That said it is a very laborious process, and can only be properly done by somebody who has expertise in detailing, including wet sanding (otherwise you will just make it worse than it is). But as said, you can make it at least that good, that even you (who knows where to look) will have trouble finding the spot. And if somebody is really good at it, is using the appropriate paint and tools, and puts the required effort into it, he can actually fix it so good, that you won't even able to tell where the chip was, because it will be just perfect. Without repainting the whole panel.

    Hi Mike,
I have 2013 MB suv (GL450) i like to keep my car clean as well i usually take to my local car detail shop for wax and polish wondering how much protection of coating would cost which you are talking about in video. BTW, I had small crack at bottom left corner of windshield from one of the road trip. FYI, cost to replace it about $1300 plus taxes from dealership and my insurance will pay only $650 because that's it would cost if you go through them.

Alternatively, take the car to InShane and grab the train out of Harrisburg. Probably cost like $30 each way, has free wifi and great scenery.

I’ve got a small dent in my bonnet too where a van coming in the other direction chucked up a large stone. It’s ridiculous, I was so gutted when I saw them all today when washing my car. Just seen your vlog re chipped windscreen. Here in UK I had to have my screen replaced on my GLC. This was covered by insurance. When it was replaced the camera and radar is not attached to the screen and is a separate entity. It snaps onto a part already fitted on the screen. It was arranged by the insurance company to be re-calibrated (although this was probably not really necessary if screen if fitted accurately). Therefore new screen should not really cost much more than a normal refit. Love your vlogs (and your cat!).

That little knick on the windshield should still let you pass inspection though. It's not like it's crack or in pieces I would think. Maybe for the tinted windows, but hopefully you can still pass with them on.

I always wrap my cars before driving them, not saying you "deserve" it but you knew the risks.

so the Wheels of the eco sport look cooler than the ones you put on the Mercedes.

Didn't think I needed PPF on my M2. Got tons of stone chips, repainted the front bumper, and put PPF on it. Do it as early as you can on a new car.... it's worth it believe me.

As someone already mentioned, PPF can not protect 100%, and it's impossible to repair if a store does go through. Also IMO it dilutes the finish and depth of shine. Finally whilst stone chips are deeply annoying, I am the same as you, if carefully touched in and flatted, particularly with black, they look fairly invisible.By the way the new wheels look great.

Mike, I know you want the car looking perfect, however these things happen to all of us, best thing to do in winter/spring drive the other cars you have more, use the Amg on good days
