I've been rabidly searching for rumors about the next gen Montage. Thanks for getting this out! Now hopefully we'll have greater polyphony, more storage and improved preset/performance access through the USB, like they currently have with the YC and CP series. The textured black keys actually come from Yamaha's CP88 and YC88. I'm guessing that texture will only be present on the 88-key instrument, like with the CP and YC series.
Much thanks for reviewing some aspects of the proposed next generation Montage. Quite informative. IMHO, very disappointed with the removal of the Parts, Motion and ARP select buttons and also the black keys being textured. Yamaha should have just included the "AN-X engine" and increased user memory to their original Montage, as that would have been perfect!
Do we think this will have a proper sequencer like the Fantom? I know the previous montage did not because so many people used theirs with DAWs (in Yamahas words) but I much prefer making full or close to full compositions on the keyboard alone. I know I’m the minority with that but just curious!
I’m with YOU!! I would love a “play a sound, record a sound” sequencer with full effects! I went from a Korg M1… to Korg O1/Wfd… to Triton… to Triton Studio… to Yamaha Motif ES… to Motif XF… to WAIT A MINUTE, Yamaha took out the sequencer in the Montage?!?!? Musician… Instrument… Sound… Music… It’s the musician who has a musical idea and wants to get it down so other people can hear the musical idea. Why do we need to get the computer involved with menus libraries to explore… OS updates… Non-compatibility with your last software synth… boot up time… Running low of RAM… All I’m asking for is a canvas and a color palette in order to create invisible art! Bring back the internal sequencer!
Thx. Nice analysis Scott. I think the original montage had a modern design that stood out in terms of both name and aesthetics. If this Pic is real, then it lacks the impressive name and visual appeal. Much more is expected after 7 years. Hope the specs would impress.
I think the amount of user ram could be the most important factor as it is very easy to fill up the 1.7 gigs of ram with sound libraries, and having more ram would be a great selling point. Obvious additional sound engines, if any exist, would also be another thing of huge importance.
Thanks for the pics... I'll be buying the new model as I own a MODX6 and consider it a "poor man's Montage" with a terrible keyboard action and cheap feel. I've always regretted not spending the extra on the Montage. I have a Genos and it looks like the Montage is now heading towards that design with the extra display above the 8 controller knobs and drawbars. I'm assuming the action will be at a FATAR level and exceptionally good. Great video!
I hope that Yamaha will make a new Montage/Modx with updated EX-5 engines (AN-X, Virtual Acoustics and FDSP engines) or a dedicated unit with these engines... they could be snapped up as never seen before
That 4/4 label under a Montage button does not represent a time signature. It reflects the meaning of the button, depending on whether PERFORMANCE CONTROL or PART CONTROL is selected.
Looks really nice, hopefully the pitch and mod wheels are too the bottom left like usual, I hate when they're at the top. I wish we had 9 sliders, so were probably not getting an organ engine similar to the YC one which is a shame, but let's see what happens when we get more info!
What the Montage and most music manufacturers need is to take lessons from Elektron and copy Overbridge. It’s all about the interface to the computer that your device has.
Looks like relatively small changes. Same screen and overall layout, would guess the internal chipset stays the same too, then it becomes interesting whether a new AN-X engine is exclusive to this new model or supported on existing Montage and MODX+ products.
Thanks Scott for the preview. Very interesting that the buttons on the right are gone. The screen on my montage failed after about three years. It would not respond to touch commands and I had to rely on the buttons on the right side to navigate the screen until I could get a replacement screen. Looking forward to another review once you receive a manual.
If the keybed is no longer BHE and the textured keys are part of new keybed with a more true piano like feel, then it may be better for those who prefer pianos as their most important sound over all the other types of sounds possible on a synth..!? Regarding the PART Mute/Solo and Operator & Element Mute/Solo, I suspect they were moved to the top left where the new screen is. The 8 buttons above the screen are likely for selecting the PART, Operator, Element, ARP, etc. and the two buttons on the left of that screen are likely the Mute/Solo or On/Off, etc. buttons that used to be on the right hand side.
Should I get a Nord lead 4, a grandmother,access virus c(b a), poly d, ms 20or wait for a used system 8, Iam looking for something that can make most sounds you might need from harsh stabs to lush and soft soundscapes
The equipment you listed are extremely different keyboards . If you're looking for a diverse Synth check out the Novation summit, it practically can do it all if you're willing to dedicate to leaning how to program it.
The summit is a little too expensive for my taste since It’s price is basically doubled at that price range because of US dollar to cad dollar, plus I don’t really like the summits style,also the Nord lead 4 is some what comparable to a summit except impulse morph and some other things having a couple cons compared to the summit but also some pluses and since a nord lead 4 is available for 1800 cad I would get it over the summit any day. Until there is a notation under 2600cad no tax.
Ever since you expressed your wish for some “clone wheel” action on this new Montage, that’s the big thing I’ve been hoping for as well. Probably not, but here’s hoping.
Yeah additive synthesis/organ sim is an under-utilized approach imo, can get so much out of specific per-harmonic controls (not to mention the really nice standard arrangement of chorus/rotary style effects following it usually).
still no tiltable display and plastic case? 🤷 yamaha keeps it cheap - they should watch what korg delivers in terms of features and quality - for exampe with their pa-5x in comparison with the genos.

But my Montage 8 looks a beast and this offering seems, well, a bit dinky in comparison with a sort of already out dated look. Certainly doesn't raise the "must buy at any cost" rush of blood the new Fantom did on release, and what is it 8 years since the original Montage hit the shelves. Guess we will all wait and see how much our bank balances are threatened as more information is revealed. For me flagships should be back breaking monsters as that's part of what traditionally has added to their mystique😄😄
I'm glad they are keeping the name and the styling the same as it is a very nice looking keyboard. Even though I won't be getting one as I tend to use Halion 7 one thing I think the new Montage should include are some of the sounds introduced on Genos like saxophones, kino strings and revo drums.
what is the source of the images? also, these pictures might be a prototype, to see how testers respond to it.. and that Yamaha makes last minute changes in september. (e.g. different keybed, perhaps there are multiple versions sent out to testers, awaiting feedback, so they can pick the ones that has the most liked feedback)
The volume slider/switch is what caught my attention, I thought I was the only one that didn't like that design on the current model. I was uncovering my Montage to use it and accidentally caught part of the fabric cover on the volume slider moving it to full volume. I pressed a key and bam! I blew out one of my studio monitors. My bad for not checking, but it cost me a set of monitors. But hey, I did get a new bigger better set of monitors so there's that...
I would definitely miss the part mute etc buttons over on the right hand side. I already had the MOXF and the MODX and I found the MODX didn't suit as well because it was missing those buttons so I bought the Montage as well. I don't want to have to mess around with touch screen options to do what I currently do with those buttons!
I'm not sure what I'm waiting for, but look for something New to excite me. These slightly pimped up spec's and rehashed models are getting boring ima. Please Yamaha, give us something new.
I'm hoping for an organ engine instead of samples and also a better graphic interface. But what I really dream of is that Yamaha improves their piano samples to a Nord-like level. I think it's unacceptable for a company that has its own grand pianos (and also owns Bosendorfer) to have worse samples than other companies.
Oddly there's not even pads or analog type Fantom section or any fun looking interface. I used to have the Genos so that screen depending on customization isn't a big deal. It doesn't do much on the Genos. The only saving grace would be that if they focused all the design money into the guts, sound quality and output. Not trying to break even with the Fantom but actually beat it so there's nothing on the surface that appears to beat the Fantom. The EX5 center knobs look interesting, could it be loaded with (2) new engines like ANx and VLx? I have mine on pre-order probably just trying the M6 during the 30 trial period. The sound is what really matters and will it be more AWM2, FMx or Marvelous!
What a poor, lifeless, lackluster panel design 😕😕😞... After almost 7 years, couldn't Yamaha come up with a futuristic and more appealing design?! 😒 I know that SOUNDS and functionality, keys and keybed quality and.... is the main goal.... BUT panel design and aesthetic is important too...
It looks like only the 88 key model has an 'X'. The others are called M6, M7. Since it has the piano keyboard (weighted) the texture is not an unexpected thing.
I'm gonna guess that the texture is only on the 88 key. There's no way Yamaha would place textured black keys on a waterfall. New 88-key probably has a YC88 action.
Hey Scott - another youTuber / Theorist here - jsut curious what you think of this theory... Ok stay with me for a minute... WHAT IF - the Montage, is a revitalized EX5 with AN1x capabilities. I'm just saying this as a thought that MAYBE since the EX5 and AN1x are basically 25 years old, and seem to be going through a sort of revitalization, MAYBE Yamaha anticipated this and added those capabilities to the Montage. I mean the sounds of the EX5 sould be easy - the new interface is sort of remeniscent of the EX5 and the ANx Engine was part of the EX5 with the PLG board... Just thinking and hoping...
Six knobs does not look modern. These are like my ex7. Can it be fake?? Because you cannot find any clues about New synth or keyboard even it is planned to release 1 monfh later. It may be true for korg. Additşınally 4 buttons around data control does not look like yamaha.
The texture on the black keys almost looks like wood grain… wooden piano hammer-action keys on the M8x? Also, only the 88-key has the “x” in the name, the others are M6 and M7.
Is this DEFINITELY the replacement for the flagship or is it a bridge between the Montage & MODX? I can see how it's an improved design over both MODX & Montage, while less advanced than the flagship. Looks great, though.

Hmmm I dunno? If this is it and the UI doesnt change much it may be better to get a Fantom for its ease of use to compose and get a MODX/MODX+ to use as a sound module, simply because the sounds are superior to Fantom. I had a Montage and sold it because of the UI. I miss the awesome sounds.😉
The new Montage would be great. However, Yamaha messed up when they removed that bank of buttons on the right side of the keyboard inly to leave empty space. For tbat reason, I would actually prefer the old Montage if I was in the market for one. Yeah, Yamaha had a good thing going with the new Montage by improving the interface, but they had to ruin the right side? Why leave off the orange buttons, Yamaha? The Montage is supposed to be a "flagship" synth. Therefore, the new generation should retain the features of the old one while adding new features, not take away features that it's predecessor had!!!! I guess you can say I'm disappointed in that decision.
Not feeling the g.a.s. They definitely didn’t hire Axel Hartmann. At least they added back the EX5’s knobs. Looks like they nerfed any possibility of tactile VA or tone wheel engines.

I suspect its copying the genos. They adopted the oled strip above the sliders from the genos. And its likely to have both mod wheels and mod joystick like the genos. That would make the most sense. Best of both flavours roland joystick style or mod wheel style. Ram is going to be large!
i'll keep my 80lb XS8 and buy VST 's for better quality samples.... I know people prefer plastic for weight reasons but that thing looks cheap compared to the XS8 from the knobs to the faders
...Seem to be gone? They are gone! Most of what is happening here is cost saving. The navigation buttons around the data wheel are poor. Live performance on stages will find the former to be more tactile and easy to not strike anything else. No super knob. Don't expect anything revolutionary, maybe even a Nautilus type of slim-down or maybe a slim upgrade from the Modx+. I am somewhat certain that this machine will not have the real time performance features of the former. Very few demos ever show what this machine does in real time other than play pianos, piano combinations or electric pianos.
I would gladly se that theyd change the screen to a capacitive one and have another colour on the button leds, didnt dig the orange. White lights would be neet.
Mmmh... I would have changed the design. Lots of recycled buttons, knobs and sliders. 10 years old design. That horrible horizontal line connecting the two displays....Roland and Korg workstations have a better layout.
Yamaha have said its goodbye to the montage and that a next generation montage synthesizer is being launched october 2023 possibly a montage X as i have heard , in my eyes this is still a montage so what are yamaha up to, unless they are changing the name it still is a montage no different from motif where they upgraded to xs and xf over the years very confusing , will be interesting to see what happens and that it just isn't another upgrade costing thousands of pounds extra ! they need to do something extra special to compete with other manufacturers !
I disagree I like how it looks over the how the Korg Nautilus looks even though I use VST instruments like Halion 7 partly because I can't afford to buy a workstation/synth keyboard. I like the fact it looks reminscent to something from the 90s as I have midi sound modules from the 90s. Montage looks a lot nicer than the Genos does, don't like keyboards with that curved design.

The key texture is from the YC series. I have a YC88 and really like it. I would presume they would not be on the 61 & 76 models.

I agree with you. The sculpted back of the Montage is just cool looking. This looks like a gradual evolution, not something radical and new.

Cool video! Adding a note on the current Montage, it has DAW control already. Press PRESET and then "Remote" on the bottom left toggle.

At the end of the day it’s another Montage, not really a new machine. Like going from a Motif to the Motif XS.

I LOVE the Summit, which is why it's on the stand right above my Montage. It's quick and simple for sound creation, and it always sounds great.
I'll withhold judgement until I hear it.
It would be nice if it added some of the FM features that it's missing compared to the FS1R.

What are you smoking? Yamaha has some of the best acoustic samples.
Those knobs under the screen are putting off some EX5/EX7 vibes. Maybe FMX,AN,VL/VP FDSP extended synthesis?

Hey Scott - another youTuber / Theorist here - jsut curious what you think of this theory... Ok stay with me for a minute... WHAT IF - the Montage, is a revitalized EX5 with AN1x capabilities. I'm just saying this as a thought that MAYBE since the EX5 and AN1x are basically 25 years old, and seem to be going through a sort of revitalization, MAYBE Yamaha anticipated this and added those capabilities to the Montage. I mean the sounds of the EX5 sould be easy - the new interface is sort of remeniscent of the EX5 and the ANx Engine was part of the EX5 with the PLG board... Just thinking and hoping...
Six knobs does not look modern. These are like my ex7. Can it be fake?? Because you cannot find any clues about New synth or keyboard even it is planned to release 1 monfh later. It may be true for korg. Additşınally 4 buttons around data control does not look like yamaha.
The texture on the black keys almost looks like wood grain… wooden piano hammer-action keys on the M8x? Also, only the 88-key has the “x” in the name, the others are M6 and M7.
All I know is the convoluted complexity of the the Yamaha DGX-670 drives me nuts.
I'm hoping they will be releasing a new version of the MODX along with this new version of the Montage.
Being that the current MODX+ was released only a year ago, I find this highly unlikely.

Is this DEFINITELY the replacement for the flagship or is it a bridge between the Montage & MODX? I can see how it's an improved design over both MODX & Montage, while less advanced than the flagship. Looks great, though.

En el caso de la tecla esa textura se da en el CP88 y YC88, al ser teclas de madera, que para un pianista se agradece. Si es como pienso y es una combinación del CP88 y un MONTAGE 8, seria una bomba, sería lo ideal.

I would think the removal of the buttons on the right side is because it's not relevant to the AN-X, which does not have 8 of anything.

Hmmm I dunno? If this is it and the UI doesnt change much it may be better to get a Fantom for its ease of use to compose and get a MODX/MODX+ to use as a sound module, simply because the sounds are superior to Fantom. I had a Montage and sold it because of the UI. I miss the awesome sounds.😉

The new Montage would be great. However, Yamaha messed up when they removed that bank of buttons on the right side of the keyboard inly to leave empty space. For tbat reason, I would actually prefer the old Montage if I was in the market for one. Yeah, Yamaha had a good thing going with the new Montage by improving the interface, but they had to ruin the right side? Why leave off the orange buttons, Yamaha? The Montage is supposed to be a "flagship" synth. Therefore, the new generation should retain the features of the old one while adding new features, not take away features that it's predecessor had!!!! I guess you can say I'm disappointed in that decision.
I kind of agree - those buttons are one of the important reasons why I sold my MODX and bought the Montage instead.
@@ScottsSynthStuff Absolutely. That is definitely one of the main selling points of the Montage (first version) versus the MODX.
Maybe ... they bring the keybed from the CP88 and slap it on the new Montage.

It look good but if it doesn’t have a sequencer & a sampler like the Motif it might be a flop.
Not feeling the g.a.s. They definitely didn’t hire Axel Hartmann. At least they added back the EX5’s knobs. Looks like they nerfed any possibility of tactile VA or tone wheel engines.
Let’s see how long the screen pixels last…..!

As noted earlier - only 8 sliders...a bit disappointing - maybe an indicator that the organ was not significantly improved...

I suspect its copying the genos. They adopted the oled strip above the sliders from the genos. And its likely to have both mod wheels and mod joystick like the genos. That would make the most sense. Best of both flavours roland joystick style or mod wheel style. Ram is going to be large!

i'll keep my 80lb XS8 and buy VST 's for better quality samples.... I know people prefer plastic for weight reasons but that thing looks cheap compared to the XS8 from the knobs to the faders
...Seem to be gone? They are gone! Most of what is happening here is cost saving. The navigation buttons around the data wheel are poor. Live performance on stages will find the former to be more tactile and easy to not strike anything else. No super knob. Don't expect anything revolutionary, maybe even a Nautilus type of slim-down or maybe a slim upgrade from the Modx+. I am somewhat certain that this machine will not have the real time performance features of the former. Very few demos ever show what this machine does in real time other than play pianos, piano combinations or electric pianos.
I would gladly se that theyd change the screen to a capacitive one and have another colour on the button leds, didnt dig the orange. White lights would be neet.
How about a bigger screen too, similar size the Korg Kronos?🤔

Mmmh... I would have changed the design. Lots of recycled buttons, knobs and sliders. 10 years old design. That horrible horizontal line connecting the two displays....Roland and Korg workstations have a better layout.

Yamaha have said its goodbye to the montage and that a next generation montage synthesizer is being launched october 2023 possibly a montage X as i have heard , in my eyes this is still a montage so what are yamaha up to, unless they are changing the name it still is a montage no different from motif where they upgraded to xs and xf over the years very confusing , will be interesting to see what happens and that it just isn't another upgrade costing thousands of pounds extra ! they need to do something extra special to compete with other manufacturers !

I disagree I like how it looks over the how the Korg Nautilus looks even though I use VST instruments like Halion 7 partly because I can't
afford to buy a workstation/synth keyboard. I like the fact it looks reminscent to something from the 90s as I have midi sound modules
from the 90s. Montage looks a lot nicer than the Genos does, don't like keyboards with that curved design.
I hope that the center screen will be more responsive. Unfortunately, it looks exactly like the old one.
