    Welcome to Australia.
While I love the Rainbow Lorikeets; they really are the football hooligans of the bird world and bully a lot of the more timid birds away. I hope you get see some of these others - common (but often frightened off by the lorikeets) is the Crimson Rosella, a striking red and blue parrot about the same size with a pleasant piping call.
Do not feed the Rainbows seed because you are condemning them to a slow death by starvation. They are nectar feeders with delicate structures on their tongues that are destroyed by hard foods like seed. They are not adapted to get all the nutrition they need from seed and must have a supply of nectar for balance. Once their tongues are damaged they cannot feed effectively on nectar and the birds die a slow death from malnutrition.

First, welcome to Australia. One thing to remember is that every state and capital city has its own identity and language. Sydney is more of a modern city that has a heavy tourist population, so it is more about tourism than the other capital cities. As an Australian, I can tell you that you can spend your entire life here and never see everything that this unique continent has to offer. I personally live in Adelaide, South Australia and Adelaide is more like a country town and some people even find it a little boring, but it is the quietness that I like the most. Adelaide is very peaceful and you can walk the city in a day. We have a lot of parks and the city centre is surrounded by parklands. It is called the city of churches and is not as developed as other capital cities. Perth is the most isolated capital city in the world and because of this it has developed its own cultural identity so I would suggest seeing that city and Western Australia because it is completely different from the east coast both in its history and environment. Yes, I do feel very privileged to have been born in Australia and I can't think of anywhere else I would rather live.

Actually the Gold Coast is the most tourist oriented in Australia, with a static domestic population of about 750.000 and a ALMOST month on month on month itinneramt tourist population of a bout 1 million. This makes it a city of nearly 2 million people, quite remarkable.

Enjoy your stay in Australia. You need to get off the beaten track - a bit. Come up to Newcastle when you have a moment. There is so much to explore in the city and the countryside around us.

Come up for a few days to explore the coast, the beaches, wine country, European and Indigenous heritage and history.

I was in Sydney back in 1986, and the place has changed some-what. Do have lots of fun and continue to be safe as you travel. 🙂.*

Merry Beach..... I want there every year for Xmas Holidays....from the literally as a 3 year old , up until the Late 80's... Cant believe how much its been built up... And the Caravan park is just errrgh... Originally , like pretty beach , just tents and a few caravans... But alas.. Thats progress.. spoilt by developers... Just my rant...As its dear to growing up as a child..
Still .. Beautiful part of the South Coast...
    Enjoy...
