  • In Uganda, the encroachment of settlements into the country's western forests has sparked a battle between humans and chimpanzees.
So far this year, chimps have killed or injured dozens of children, and locals are retaliating by hunting down and poisoning their protected neighbours.

The ecosystem the chimps live in gets destroyed by humans who are incapable of living sustainably. So yes, of course our deepest sympathies are for the chimps - or rather : the foundation of our lives which is the forest ecosystem.
In Africa a lot of desertification takes place because humans destroy forests. This in turn causes degradation of soil and - oh my - have you thougt about that: you cannot grow your crops on degraded soil. Uganda has so much degraded land. So think about this first before you write your comment.
And in case a stupid comment ("luxury")of yours appears after my comment: i fight for biodiversity in my town and help establishing meadows, I live vegan and don't drive a car.

@@jollyjokress3852 it's great that you're vegan and don't drive a car, good for you. But if you live in a first world country I'd bet your eco footprint is bigger than those farmers. Think of the deforestation required to build the neighbourhood you wrote that message on, the emissions used to create the electricity you use, the plastic used to build the device you wrote that comment from, the amount of water plastic and gas used to get your vegetables to you. The Americans revolutionized agriculture to make it more efficient, however it had a net negative impact on the environment so even if you're vegan if you live in a country where farmers use the same or similar methods, those farms are probably doing more damage to the environment than those Ugandans are. It's cool that you don't drive a car but trains and busses don't run on air either. Not to mention the environmental impact of making a railway to begin with

I live in the temperate part of the northern hemisphere and I didn't even heat my flat i winter because to me it is a big waste:
That said, you still don't get the gist of my comment: It is futile to destroy the forest as it gives them more than degraded land could ever give them. And you defend the ones who keep on detstroying.
I'm not only "targeting" the Ugandas, I am also doing that with German wine producers, construction companies etc. We've already crossed so many planetary boundaries.

People in the comments seem to lack all empathy for these Ugandans. There is no easy solution. Kenyans have challenges with lions killing cattle and elephants plundering crops. Indians face similar issues. Human wildlife conflict is a problem in parts of the world that have a booming population threatening the natural ecosystem. In the UK, wolves and bears were made extinct around 1,500 years ago. It's no surprise commenters on here can only offer shallow responses. Solutions are much harder to come by in developing countries but these countries governments and universities are trying to resolve these issues. It takes time.

That's why for example there is only one species of human beings, conflict with the other ones was unavoidable and in those case, there need to be a winner for things to calm down. Same for a lot of wars between humans, when ressources were limited, you couldn't always "share" the little ressources that existed, so if you wanted your child to avoid famine, you needed to win. Unfortunately this is the same story across the world, humans move into an animals territory and then there is conflict. There isn’t enough land to move animals into new areas (and even if there was humans would eventually move to those areas). Then humans get upset and say governments care more about the animals and not the people. No easy answers but as long as the human population continues to explode these wildlife and human conflicts will never go away and we all know who will lose out in the end.
