Shane, great video. I recently gave up on my Marshall DSL40C. Even after upgrading the speaker to a V30 the amp was limited to classic rock tones. The clean was very decent but the volume jump between clean and gain becomes annoying. When switching between pentode to triode (40 to 20W) there is a slight tone sacrifice. Currently I have been using a Blackstar Club 40 MKII and I am very pleased with the full range of tone and style cover by this amp. Growing on the eighties, a Marshall is an icon that as an adult I had to have, sadly I have grown out of that desire. Not saying Marshall is bad just saying that the low wattage line of amps is not as great as the big brothers. Unlike Fender which most of the low wattage amps still retain that great Fender tone. Like many of us, I just can afford a JCM800 and 1969 cab or play it at the volume at which these beast shines.
Hi everyone, I hope you dig the tones out of this little beast as well as the new intro clip. You can check them out here if you want - amzn.to/2PwBW7k 😎🤘
Dam Shane, I want this one too. Hard to believe my Pignose 7-100 has more wattage that this little beast. This 1-watt Marshall sounds best with your Tele.
Hi Frank. I've been slowly transitioning to Panasonic gear the last few months. As of this video I have the setup finished.. Thanks for the kind words mate. :-)
intheblues + hey Shane totally off subject here, but what was the name of that guitar brand from the United States that you purchased last yr? the guitar with the weird headstock and p-90's
IMO this combo is the best choice for beginners. After I played on the DSL1, I broke my VOX Pathfinder 10 against the wall and threw him out of the window. Sound of smashing crappy combo is only one thing which P10 could play for real. Yes i was a little bit drunk))) Talking seriosly, Marshall DSL1C is only one guitar amp which has a necessary adjustments, small sizes, lovely sound, comfortable volume for plaing in the small room and affordable price. P.S. I'm tried Vox AC4C1, Vox NightTrain, AV15, VT20, Marshall Code, Yamaha THR, Roland Cube, Boss Katana, etc...
Keep one of these at my gfs place, not enough room for my main rig so this is perfect for having there to fix my guitar playing addiction! Sounds great too for the size and price. Fine little spacesaver!
I love the honest reviews you do, very fair assessment of the Marshall, it would be a good home practice amplifier , nice chance up, 1 watt of gives you a lot of crunch, it sounded great w humbuckers
I am very fond of mine as well, a great little amp, the 0.1 watt setting is handy for playing at home when others don't want to hear you, but it doesn't sound as good at the 1 watt setting. Probably doesn't push the speaker as hard. 1 watt is actually quite loud.
If one is bound to play at low volumes because of living conditions, I wonder if it would not be better to use headphones on any other amp that supports it?
You have to demo those new Marshall Origin series. Both the 5 and 20. 5 would have been perfect for home use if they only went with a 12" speaker or even a 10" instead of an 8".
For a small 8'"speaker and 1 tube watt I think this sounds pretty good. Useful at home and in the studio. Heck you could mike her up for the stage and EQ to taste per venue. I have a 7 band graphic equalizer built into my mixer and I'm sure I could EQ this amp to my taste if my guitar and the amps EQ can't get me there (which I doubt). I bet if I ran this through my P.A. System (2) 1,000 watts ea.,with 15" and 1 " tweeters I could make the bass thump!
The gain knob only works on ultra gain channel, not classic channel, so what you say is impossible. The clean channel has just one knob, volume which gets dirty as you increase it.
Little fizzy for me. Are you going to try the larger 40w version? If you do it would be interesting to see if you can gig with it. I'd like to see if you can get buy without a gain pedal. Yeah I know take all the fun out of it :)
Just picked up this lil Marshall. Overall, it’s great. However, he’s right, it doesn’t handle pedals well. BUT, I found a comment noting positive effects of a cab simulator with this Marshall. So I picked up the CabDryVR and my gosh, the sound is night and day. It can now handle any pedal I throw at it and sounds great at low volumes, which I’m assuming is the main appeal of this amp.
Shane, it would be nice when demoing small combo amps, to run them through a 2x12 or 4x14 as well, because it bastly improves the sound, and many of us have some cab already so we would be using the amps that way. I think that is a fair way to compare them with bigger amps, and most reviewers don't bother doing that. Great review as always
I think it's the mood of the guitar player that counts the most. Years ago when the 1960's produced rock stars I pretty much think their mood was altered by drugs, especially the famous LSD and of course pot. I know, I was there! Putting that aside I want to tell you that I have played through childrens $59 P.A. sing along little amplifiers with my guitars late at night when all is quiet and I do not need a whole lot of amplification. The results were the guitars sounded just fine. Sure I did not try for the "brown" sound. Rather I wanted a "clean" tone. I was very surprised. These days I always keep a Vox Pathfinder 10 watt SS amp with a 6" speaker in my bedroom. I can turn it on and plug in my guitars and get different, maybe not better tones than the child's P.A. Toy for sure. That's because it has a hi-gain channel, Treble and bass controls and a nice clean channel as well as the 10 watts and a 6" speaker. All superior to that $59 childs sing along toy. I think maybe this new Marshall DSL1H would be even better for my bedroom. I would probably move it into my living room which is now officially my studio so I could play it during the day. What I really like is because I know it only uses preamp tubes, I can leave it on all day long, every day and never worry about replacing the tubes. I would not feel the same with my high power tube amplifiers that use EL34's and 6L6 and even my EL84's and 6V6 amplifiers. So that's what has me looking and looking into the new Marshall DSL1H. It's a tube amp that can be treated like a Solid State amp. It has 2 12AX7, one for the clean and one for the Gain channels. It uses another preamp tube a 12AU7 that has low gain but is often used in low power amplifiers. That's the entire tube complement for the DSL1H. Possible $30 to $35 bucks every 5 to 10 years for tubes. Today I have been playing through 2 Marshall SS/Digital amplifiers-my MG50CFX and tmy Code 50. I have 2 12" speakers, 100 watts, tremolo, reverb, delay and stereo all on as I play. I am using my Behringer Tube Ultragain MIC100 tube preamp in line before the amplifiers. I am not worried about putting my guitar down and taking a break and returning to the internet, or to eat, or to go outside and feed the birds. I would not do this all day, every day with my Hi-Power tube amps. But I could and I would do it with the new Marshall DSL1H. I do not need really loud volume when I record and play for myself. I need tone. Without the tone to match my mood my playing gets stale and suffers. I am not always in the mood for Marshall Cranked Tones. I also like playing "clean" and the Blues and Jazz, besides Rock/Metal.
Lol, Actually that's not a bad idea. Have this sitting on top of your 4x12 when you just need to practice instead of firing up the 100 watter head... not a bad idea...
Sounds alright for a practice amp. However it's priced in that hard category where you can get some other nice amps for the $400-500 that you could actually gig with as well (and have FX loops etc). If you need the marshall tone, it's definitely there. BTW Shane, any chance you could do some demo's on stand alone drum machines like the digitech trios, alesis etc?
Shane, with the new DSL line, they say it has power scaling. That means that they control the volume by lowering or raising the high voltage going to the tubes. From what I have seen, this only has the attenuator switch in the back. All that is doing is adding resistors in series to the speaker and adding a pull down resistor to attenuate down to .1 If this actually had power scaling, that would make it sound better at the lowest setting. Is it just the larger models with this feature?
Great video Shane. I was wondering how it was with pedals. No other reviews/demos have addressed that aspect. After watching your demo I realized that the Marshall demos from NAMM only demo the Origin series with pedals but not the DSL series. I love how these sound, but I’m much more interested in amps that sound good with pedals. I’ll be eagerly awaiting your demos of the Origin series once they’re available (supposedly April here in the states).
Hi Shane thanks for the great reviews. I was just debating whether to go for this Marshall or bug era v5 infinium or Yamaha thr10C for home practice. Not sure if the Marshalls right for me having heard this - I’m not a high gain fan. Prefer cleaner fender type tones. Any thoughts Shane?
Sounds cool, club owners may still say it's too loud. Also keep in mind it's marshall watts so it may really be 2 watts. I still can't believe I used a hundred watt Half Stack years back and at times it wasn't loud enough. The one Marshall amp has me intrigued to go out and buy another Marshall is the mini Jubilee combo I'd like to see a demo of that one
All those extra watts just go into making more and tighter bass in your sound. Cool for certain types of music, but not all. Any speaker will only get so loud no matter how many watts you put to it. I can't believe I used a 100 watt head and 4x12 either. LOL. To me 15-30 watts is more than enough for anything.... except bone-crunching metal... which I don't play since I became 40+ years old. haha.
I have a 'review' of the Mini Jubilee Head on my channel.. its not that great, had to do it for uni. But it might give you an idea how what the combo is like, I personally love the amp but it would be cool to see Shane demo it. I feel weird about promoting my own videos and channel on someone else video so sorry Shane if you're not cool with it. If you aren't just delete my comment and ill understand :)
ElectricUrinal I had a hot rodded Marshall JCM900 MKII and a FULL stack of 1960A and a JCM900 1960B speaker cabs. So running 100 + watts through qty. 8 of 12" speakers will get loud.
I'm just now getting interested in small amps, and there are a bunch to choose from! I would also say that not taking dirt pedals is NO liability for me, my thinking is that you're trying to dime a tube power section to get THAT sound without going deaf or getting arrested, so that's where I'm thinking of heading. Actually, after having the EVH5150III for 10 years, I just don't like dirt pedals anymore (even the DS1 and my GEMINI), even though amps like the Deluxe reverb kind of need something because I don't like cranking that to 10 either to get this kind of punch ... which is where these little guys are starting to interest me.... the 57 champ and this series seem to be the best bets for me. I have a bad feeling I'll be getting one of each because.... well because I can! haha. Good vid, thanks.
I was really digging the crunch tones you were getting with the Les Paul. Clean tone, not so much. Shane, how would you compare this, for the money to other bedroom amps? Seems pretty pricey?
Thanks for the review. FWIW, I don't care for the tones from this amp. It has the "blanket over cab" tone plus it's noisy as all get out. That tone shift just drives the amp from muddy mode to swampy muddy mode.
JohnnyG Exactly right! I purchased one from Sweetwater after playing the head version. I needed a combo, made the mistake of thinking the 8" would be @s good. Folly! I sent it back, second was worse plus noisy with everything set to ZERO. BUT,with ext cab, head sounds great.Use the fx loop and it sounds bit better. Crap amps for the price. Sweetwater tech asked me to play it over the phone, blamed the fuzz on my phone spkr. Trot line weights, best use for a Marshall DSL 1 CR
Not so bad for 1 watt, better than origin 5C. Good tone with this 8" speaker. Did you test the 5CR to compare? The 5CR is probably the best choice for home. The old one DSL 5C was good, if the new 5CR is even better, it could be a great home amp.
Shane, I noticed that wasn’t your main Tele with blade buckers. Yet it said Fender on the headstock. I saw your video on the b.Scotch blonde classic vibe a few days ago. It may have been an old video I can’t remember. What’s the story on the tele in this video?
Hey shane, fender mij is coming back! There is something called the traditional series. That have a lot of lefties. There is a 70s strat, 68 strat, 70s tele custom, 50s tele, 60s p bass, and many more in lefties
I was surprised how quickly it started distorting with the LP, on the Classic channel. I can turn mine pretty high up before my strat or tele overdrives that channel. I like to keep the Ultra channel Gain at or below noon. That's enough overdrive and sustain for me, and things get a little too ragged for my taste if I turn it further up. Agreed that the Reverb is very usable. Easy to dial in a little ambience, unlike some spring reverbs that drown you in reverb as soon as you touch the knob.
hello, I would like to know if the volume is suitable for playing on the street, without a group but alone with the backing tracks.. hello thanks FRANCESCO
Shane: Are you planning on doing the 5 watt model? I want one of these but with the DSL5 is only about $150 bucks more and has the gain knob on the classic gain side. Plus it has a 10" speaker. Such a dilemma :-)! To make matters worse, the DSL20 is only $100 more! I also have the Bugera but in the G5 version head and would like to see how it sounds in comparison. Anyway....good job on the demo as always.
They got this current line of dsls so right it rival s my stack even with 4x12 cab the single speaker gets it done I have the 20 it’s my gig go too....
Hi, Nice video, but do u think this amp is enought for mics recording in a little home studio...? I'm not in a big room, but I can pomp up the volume, and I don't want break my ears....so...
I just bought this. The classic clannel is perfect. But the ultra gain seems to be fizzy even at low gain. Why is it? If i buy and od/distortion pedal and use it through the classic gain channel, will the dirty sound be better? Thanks.
thanks for the reply! well then first thing first is getting rid of my old gen dsl 5c :D i beleive with the 0.1 watt mode i can get that saturated tube sound at home without getting the neighbours to hate me!
Loved the intro. Probably just me, but when you play really good sounding kit, your playing seems to go to a different level. I think the amp makers feel obligated to add the dark stuff for the metal heads, but I'm sure there's better amps for that. I'd remove that button just to keep it from accidently getting pushed ;)
That's why good tone is important to me. When it's all cooking behind you it makes playing a whole lot easier and more fun. That was all shot in one take each. :-)
Shane you still doing that ill fitting poster contest? Cause I’d say “king of the hill” ain’t quite a blues god no matter how good his song “propane” is! Also that 1watter is a beast!!
Just bought this baby Marshall, the sound you get without pedals is really nice!
Before watching this demo, I watched three other demo videos of the same amp. Yours is the best. Thanks.
The quality of the video is amazing! The intro is crisp, the close-ups are amazing, keep up the good work!
This is the best review Ive seen of this amp ….great playing and honest
Well I'm surprised how GREAT that 1 watt amp sounds ! I really like the classic gain, it reminds of all the classic ROCK tones that I love.
Shane, great video. I recently gave up on my Marshall DSL40C. Even after upgrading the speaker to a V30 the amp was limited to classic rock tones. couldn't help but notice the excellent video quality ... new camera?
Hi Frank. I've been slowly transitioning to Panasonic gear the last few months. As of this video I have the setup finished.. Thanks for the kind words mate. :-)
intheblues + great review Shane, Honestly the review of this amp, probably the best one up on TH-cam so far
intheblues + hey Shane totally off subject here, but what was the name of that guitar brand from the United States that you purchased last yr? the guitar with the weird headstock and p-90's
Unbelievable, this little amps have the Marshall sound. I have the JCM1 and also sounds pretty good.
It's both adorable and mean, like a starving, feral kitten.
Great review, as always!
Thanks Clifton ☺️👍
Good demonstration, thank you!
PSA: If you want cleaner tones on these amps you should also turn your guitar volume down a bit.
Sounds great! Really nice crunch tone from that 1 watt Marshall, smooth, creamy and loud. Has that classic Marshall tone in a small combo
Great tones! Kudos to you for leading of the pack with these timely reviews of newly launched products.
IMO this combo is the best choice for beginners. After I played on the DSL1, I broke my VOX Pathfinder 10 against the wall and threw him out of the window. Sound of smashing crappy combo is only one thing which P10 could play for real. Yes i was a little bit drunk)))
Talking seriosly, Marshall DSL1C is only one guitar amp which has a necessary adjustments, small sizes, lovely sound, comfortable volume for plaing in the small room and affordable price.

If one is bound to play at low volumes because of living conditions, I wonder if it would not be better to use headphones on any other amp that supports it?
Thinking about the DSL5CR for my next amp. The 10" version seems to make a massive difference over this 8" version.
Sounded pretty good to my ears.
You have to demo those new Marshall Origin series. Both the 5 and 20. 5 would have been perfect for home use if they only went with a 12" speaker or even a 10" instead of an 8".
I'll have access to all of those Origin amps as well. I'm hoping the videos will be up in the next few weeks. Just waiting on the amps. :-)
I ask of my wife want this amp for Christmas lol she say okay ! IAM really impatiently omg thanks you for your video
You edited the comment and still couldn't get it right 🤷🏻♀️ !?
Well how about the Marshall DSL 1 ? How did that work out for you !?
Dude, is she your wife or mother ? 🤣
Great video, thank you!! Please put it through an at least 1x12 cab to unlock the monstrous tone because the small speaker does not give it justice!!
Isn't it called the DSL1CR?
And turn volume up and gain down for clean tone. You had the gain at 12 for the clean tone.

What Andy said...
I had the credit card out 20 seconds into the intro - then I heard it clean and put the card away.
Shane, it would be nice when demoing small combo amps, to run them through a 2x12 or 4x14 as well, because it bastly improves the sound, and many of us have some cab already so we would be using the amps that way. Sweet intro! Ya these Marshall DSL amps are killer. great video!
Cheers man. This is a great little amp.
Sounds surprisingly good for it's size. Does it have a speaker out to run it into a cab with a larger speaker?
yep you can run it that way as well. Having the speaker out is a great thing. :-)
Lol, Actually that's not a bad idea. Have this sitting on top of your 4x12 when you just need to practice instead of firing up the 100 watter head... not a bad idea...
Plugged it in a MX112 16ohms cabinet and I got far better tones, more bass and great Marshall distorded tones :)
Perfect bedroom amp
ID really use this as a practice amp. Im deciding between boss waza air and one of those
Sounds alright for a practice amp. However it's priced in that hard category where you can get some other nice amps for the $400-500 that you could actually gig with as well (and have FX loops etc). If you need the marshall tone, it's definitely there. BTW Shane, any chance you could do some demo's on stand alone drum machines like the digitech trios, alesis etc?
just played the 40 watt version....looking to try the 20 which may be perfect...what really impressed me were the clean tones and very nice reverb
Nice and affordable practice amp, sounds good as well.
So which do you like better, this or the Bugera V5?
I am sorry but I don't know if I got it right. .You can't increase the volume in to clean channel cause this will switch to crunch, right?
0_o Stunned at your guitar playing in this. Superb sir.
Cheers man, I really dig that high gain lead tone! 😳😀
Great video and playing sir!
LOVED THE INTRO SONG!!!
I was really surprised just how loud this amp is
Shane, with the new DSL line, they say it has power scaling. That means that they control the volume by lowering or raising the high voltage going to the tubes. From what I have seen, this only has the attenuator switch in the back. All that is doing is adding resistors in series to the speaker and adding a pull down resistor to attenuate down to .1
If this actually had power scaling, that would make it sound better at the lowest setting. Is it just the larger models with this feature?
I have one and it sounds like crap when you use low power mode, it totally changes the dynamics
If you wanna classic Marshall sound for not much money ,this is probably the best you can do.
I ordered the head version yesterday. I'll have it by next Tuesday.
Sounds just stunning - great stuff
Great video Shane. I was wondering how it was with pedals. No other reviews/demos have addressed that aspect. After watching your demo I realized that the Marshall demos from NAMM only demo the Origin series with pedals but not the DSL series. I love how these sound, but I’m much more interested in amps that sound good with pedals. Would be interesting to hear this into a separate cab; I wonder how much the sound might improve if given a bigger speaker and cabinet.
fiftybottles Way better. Just buy the head, spkr is awful.
Cool sounding amp!

ElectricUrinal I had a hot rodded Marshall JCM900 MKII and a FULL stack of 1960A and a JCM900 1960B speaker cabs. So running 100 + watts through qty. 8 of 12" speakers will get loud.
Cant go wrong with this one. They just released the Origin series...hopefully you can get your hands on one for in depth review
Man that little crow's sounding nice in the mix!
It’s such a nice axe. The pickups are killer. Thanks Ronnie.
I'm just now getting interested in small amps, and there are a bunch to choose from!

I have this Marshall and a Swart Atomic Jr in my bedroom, that's all the amps I need.
Nice demo as usual Shane. Where did you get the neon guitar/palm/pinapple stuff from? Do you have an affiliate link?
I actually got them all from a local shops a few years back. They are quite hard to find nowadays, sadly.
Good demo, I'm trying to decide between this one and the 5 watt.
nice to hear you playing some rock.
I thought this sounded less fizzy than the DSL20 head you tried? Was that due to the volumes involved do you think, or did you crank the 20w? :)
I was really digging the crunch tones you were getting with the Les Paul. Clean tone, not so much. Shane, how would you compare this, for the money to other bedroom amps? Seems pretty pricey?
I can't say this one is for me but It is a 1 watt gainy amp so I don't think versatility is what they had in mind.
The best combo for home !
Thank you for the great video, how do you like the clean channel for blues?
Really liking this amp. Great playing too!
Hi Shane! It seems a very cool amp, can you compare it with the V5?
Thanks Shane ..I have just pulled the trigger it's arriving Wednesday ..2 more I sleeps can't wait ..
Killer intro, superb tone
There is a 70s strat, 68 strat, 70s tele custom, 50s tele, 60s p bass, and many more in lefties
quiksilver78 I found some on reverb. Just look it up on google and some guitars should come up
Good thorough demo!
The DSL-1 and Origin 5c have the very identical Celestion speaker in the combo...
turn gain right down and volume up for a clean sound?
Great review! Thanks a lot
BOSS Katana artist in the back!!
Is it yours or a lend?
Hi Shane, sounds good! Does it have enough room to put a bigger speaker in that little thing?
Not really. You "might" be able to get away with a 10 but your best option is to just use the speaker out to another cabinet.
I really wanted to buy this amp. But my concern is can the classic gain be pure clean? Like rhythm clean. Is this amp versatile?
hello, I would like to know if the volume is suitable for playing on the street, without a group but alone with the backing tracks.. hello thanks FRANCESCO
Hi,
Nice video, but do u think this amp is enought for mics recording in a little home studio...? I'm not in a big room, but I can pomp up the volume, and I don't want break my ears....so...
So fuzz pedals aren't good with it?
Hi. Is this already the best 8 inches speaker? Can we upgrade the speaker?
Does it take pedals well?
Gotta say, i like it with the tele the best. The amp itself is a little swishy, but good for practice at home.
Hi does this amp fit well with pedals?
incredible playing
Thanks a lot Nagesh :-)
I just bought this. The classic clannel is perfect. But the ultra gain seems to be fizzy even at low gain. Why is it?
If i buy and od/distortion pedal and use it through the classic gain channel, will the dirty sound be better? Thanks.
What’s the difference with this one and the DSL 1CR ?
I thought it sounded better with the Tele and I'm a HB type guy.
new guitar?
Hey Shane, Love your reviews and jams. I was wondering if you could get a hold of a RK5 Fly Rig. Yeah the red one. Anyone of them would be awesome.
Thanks for the review! Do you think the 1 watt head with 1x12 cab would sound any better than the combo?
Yep it would sound better than the combo because you could hook it up to a much larger speaker than this one. :-)
thanks for the reply! well then first thing first is getting rid of my old gen dsl 5c :D i beleive with the 0.1 watt mode i can get that saturated tube sound at home without getting the neighbours to hate me!
Hope to see videos of the origin series!
Looks handy!
Not a fan... I like lower wattage amps, but this doesn't have enough headroom for me.Too fuzzy. It sounds cheap to me. Nice playing though.
It’s probably not for everyone. Cheers for the comments man ☺️👍
lolll its 1 watt einstein
intheblues You're welcome. Cheers.
Amazing ME 1 w or 100w, no excuse for the fizzy awful 8" spkr. Not worth 350. But PLEASE, buy one!
Hi Mate.
This one or Laney cube super 10?
Could this amp do like Smiths and Pink Floyd kinda cleaner sounds?
