  • In the timeshare world, there can be some great arguments to be made with just renting vs. owning. In this video I go over the pros and cons of simply renting from a timeshare owner instead of owning yourself.

Another place many timeshare owners rent is in Facebook groups that are specific to the timeshare brands.

I have rented twice, once for Wyndham Bonnet Creek and we also got the VIP benefits that the owner had and it was great. Second was for the Wilderness Resort at Big Ceder Lodge. Both were great experiences and would do it again. As a family of 6 is it a great option for us who don't vacation every year and it has been much better than Airbnb/Vrbo stays we have had..

@@DestinationTimeshareHello. Very informative video! Question, in your opinion which is better RCI Gold membership or Platinum membership? We just purchased our first timeshare from vacation village, Williamsburg VA. We have a deeded contract for weeks (our weeks are on even years - 2024, 2026, ect.) not points and our contract states that we are Gold members. Just wanted advice on if it is an advantage to pay for the upgrade? Thanks.

If I rent a Marriott vacation club property, would the stay count towards qualified night stay toward elite status?

    • @DestinationTimeshare

Thanks for watching! Yes, you should. Just make sure that your Marriott Bonvoy number is attached to the reservation when you check in and it is usually a good idea to verify again at checkout. I did make a video about this a while ago, though it doesn't apply specifically to renting, but it works the same; th-cam.com/video/4tj6JqmsMDo/w-d-xo.html

Your videos are great! congrats! watched like 10 in sequence :) I own 37k points in Vistana network (The westing Lagunamar), but I´m trying to sell, as I moved from US and not being able to use as much as I Thought I would. Any recommendation from the expert (saw some videos already, but thinking if you have any tips for this particular case, LOL). Thank youu!

What do you actually own? Do you own a studio week at the Westin Lagunamar or do you own 37,000 Westin Aventuras HomeOptions? When did you purchase?

@@DestinationTimeshare I own a VOI of 37k Aventuras Ownership Plan. I bought on Feb 2020 ;) Do you think I´m able to Sell it? any recommendation of what would you do? thanks a lot!!

Westin Aventuras may hold some resale value as it is the only way one can book the Westin Los Cabos at 12 months in advance. The problem is you have a very small package that is really only good for a studio at the any of the three Aventuras resorts (Los Cabos, Cancun Resort or Lagunamar). It may have some value, but if you still owe any money on it in the form of a timeshare loan, it won't be able to be sold until that is paid in full.

I love your timeshare videos. Till this one. You make it sound like I’m trying to scam someone when renting my timeshare DIY. Waiting till checkin/checkout to receive payment gives renters the option to say something was wrong and withhold payment.

Sorry, that certainly wasn't my intent when I was creating the video. Looking back at it though, I can see how it could come across that way. Certainly thousands of timeshares are rented every year from owners doing DIY, so it is overall a safe method to utilize. I may create a follow up video to talk about this. I can understand why many owners want to go DIY and avoid renters trying to rip them off too. Thanks for watching and for the feedback.

He's not pointing the finger at you. He just letting people know there are scams out there.

Usually the non-DIY companies hold the money until check-in. So the renter pays upfront and the owner gets the money when it's being used. There is also a contract involved.
That way both the renter and owner have a monetary incentive to be honest. Not saying you're not honest, there is always risk involved though.

To be quite honest, as a renter, the reason i like going directly to hotels is that I know there’s reservation waiting with a reservation number and everything. Going to a DIY timeshare owner, there’s a certain level of trust that i need to put up - if somethong goes wrong, I’m stuck at a resort somewhere having to make emergency plans.
Further, there was one time i wasn’t able to move ahead because the owner wanted payment (albeit partial) via Zelle. I backed out an paid more to a hotel that took credit cards.
When going thru an escrow or intermediary like RedWeek, it does make people like me feel better. I’m not cheap or anything - happy to pay for what i get but the thought of being inconvenienced at check-in day is a turn off - if that can be mitigated in a DIY situation, you’ve got yourself a deal.

@@srirachahero4679 There is always risk. One just needs to weigh the cost of their comfort. Many people are willing to take the risk to save a few hundred to perhaps a couple thousand dollars. Some people aren't. Neither is wrong or right and only the renter can determine what works best for them. Thanks for watching!
