      BLR. I bought one of the first, in 1972 in .308. It's still my main deer rifle. Glad I bought two of the now unobtainium magazines for it at the time. The spare mags for it now are almost what I paid originally for the rifle. Very impressed with the design and the handling, and I remember well when I put the first scratch on the wood, courtesy of some Colorado mountain granite! Only my Mitchell Arms Kragujevac-made AK is up there in my estimation. Apples and oranges, of course.

    Not even a mention of an all time classic that I would say beats them all? The 99 Savage can deliver more energy and accuracy than any of those.

    Bolt actions didn't replace lever actions for magazine capacity reasons, they replaced lever actions because they could use superior ammo, and reloading more rapidly with stripper clips

    This happened today, I plan on posting this where ever I see videos regarding Lever actions. I want to state that I can not believe any company out there, will come even close to the customer service that Henry has. Today they completely wowed me on a gun (.44 BB) that I have had for 13 years, lets just say that there was a little something wrong with it, I had sent it in 2 times to have it repaired, they did for free each time. I Happened to buy one of their 45 70 last week and noticed a change they had made, and discovered that they made a improvement on it, that would have resolved the issue on mine. I emailed them today asking them if they could retrofit mine with the improvement, and they replied back today, long story short is they are going to, after they receive mine, send me a brand new one. It makes me very happy that in the last 3 weeks I have bought a 45-70, a .410 and my H004 should arrive tomorrow. I plan on buying one of their .308, as soon as I can find one.

    Remington Marlin’s customer service was fantastic!! The best lever gun is the 2016 or newer Remington made 1895 CB 45-70. 18.5 “ barrel, dark walnut forearm and buttstock, 6+1 rounds, trigger pull, 4 lbs. 10 oz., Ballard rifling. Semi buckhorn and gold bead sights. This lever gun is accurate right out of the box, lever action perfect. Price in 2020 was only $630. Ruger’s prices are ridiculous, plus they have sacrificed authenticity for making Marlin their own!! Fluted bolt, enlarged sights.

    I moved from a Weatherby Vanguard .270 bolt & 150g Federal premium to an 81 BLR in 30-06 three years ago because I wanted a quick action & a heavier bullet. The .270 was a good, sub MOA gun & I harvested moose twice with it, but the long bolt meant I had to lift my cheek to reload. I love everything about the BLR but the standard trigger was just horrible, making me develop a flinch because I had to pull so hard. In 2020 moose season was not my lucky year but in 2021 I harvested a large bull despite the trigger with 178g ELDX bullets luckily at only 100 yds. In 2022 I was determined to improve the BLR trigger so I had a master machinist friend look at it as there is almost no option out there for a "trigger job". He reduced the hammer spring strength & the small change made all the difference resulting in sub moa performance at 200yds. In October 2022 I took a decent bull at nearly 300 yards & both of the two shots I took hit right in the boiler house using Sako 180g SuperHammerhead.

    • @TimDyck
      @TimDyck ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Since I have been shooting my BLR for almost 40 years I don't notice a problem with the trigger. I am one of those shooters who quickly adapts to the firearm instead of trying to adapt the firearm to me. The thing I like about the BLR is that it is pretty close in weight and balance to my 30-30 Winchester so when I bring it to my shoulder I am able to focus on my target and the sights will just naturally line up. The best part of learning to shoot young is that I have spent literally decades bringing rifles up and shooting so it's just a natural motion for me.

I still use both of them and although the 30-30 isn't much use for longer shots it's lightweight and speed make it as great rifle in heavy bush especially against wild boar. The BLR can reach out a lot further and take down elk and moose. I am presently looking for another BLR in 22-250 for coyotes.

    John Wayne and Chuck Conners preferred Win.1892's for their slight handling advantage on and off set. Yes Conners did his own fanning during filming and could also demonstrate to non 👏believers. That lever was a Winchester 1892 44-40, with a big loop and a set screw installed to bump the trigger with each chambering of next round. Yep it works, have one. I own several lever action rifles and without a doubt, the Henry Big Boy is the best, the fit and finish is second to none.
    Mine is in 45 colt, you can shoot cowboy ammo and barely feel the recoil, you can up it to standard ammo for a slight increase in recoil for medium game or you can fire the hottest +p ammo for some kick in your pants for dangerous game.
    Some of the Underwood and Buffalo Bore ammo will exceed a basic 454 casull and 45/70 specs.

      I have the 45 colt and 3030 henry in color case side gate. I have yet to take them to the range. It has been raining alot here. So, if I am reading it right. I can shoot everything from the light 45 colt loads all the way up to the real heavy loads.

      The only downside is above 300 grain +P, they won't cycle from the tube magazine such as the 325 grain +P bear loads.

    Marlin 1870-336 - 30/30 cal. Is as good as it gets for a lever action rifle. Bought my first one new in 1968 for $79.00 what made it so expensive the trigger is gold plated. The second one in the late 80s or early 90s was less than $200.00. Never a problem with either , still shoot excellent. Properly the best brush gun size and length around.

    Good overview. I have some disagreements such as I am not a fan of lever action rifles chambered for pistol ammo. However, you nailed it with a couple of the Marlins. The Winchester top ejection is a problem and was obvious in the video. I thought this video was dated and really thought so when they claimed that .30-.30 ammo is readily available, but noticed it was posted only 3 months ago.I love .30-.30 but the ammo market has been swamped with .223/.556. I’d love to find a source for 1000 rounds of .30-.30. If it is readily available, please hook me up!😂 By the way, I bought a Marlin 336 .30-.30 in 1979. LOVED it, but had to sell it to pay rent during my early 20’s. Last week, after searching over 2 years and waiting for the new Ruger-Marlin tool-up, last week, I just acquired a brand new Marlin 1895, SBL, 45-70, 6+1. The circle is complete.

    Opening statement about levers being replaced by bolt action because it was a simpler action with greater capacity is not true. While the action may be simpler with the exception of the French Lebel Rifle most bolt action rifles have less capacity than a lever rifle. Reason Lebel had a larger capacity, 8 rounds, than Mauser 98 or Mosin Nagant 91, each with 5 round capacity, was due to its use of a tubular magazine similar to what lever rifles had. The first bolt rifle to have a great capacity than the Lebel was the Enfield with 10 rounds due to it using a box magazine than extended below the stock of the rifle. Most other bolt rifles at the time had only internal magazines that limited capacity.
