I've watched a bunch of videos on this install, and haven't seen anyone go through that much trouble to get dead center when all he had to do was use the backup camera.
If you know the hole needs to be slightly bigger than 3/8, why not just use a slightly bigger drill bit? If you dont oval that 3/8 hole perfectly you run the chance of actually moving the location of your hole.

JR McDaniel the instructions say a 3/8,. either way is somewhat risky. I trusted my guy tho he’s done it plenty of times.
